I had a 69 Chevota FJ40 that would really light up the 33's. Definately not as reliable as the factory Toyota motor but way more fun.

 

Guilty.... back in the day I owned two FJ40's both powered by weak 307 Chevys. I was young and purchased them that way thinking how cool it was to have a Chevy Land Cruiser. Today, if I was a man of means, I would love to put a Ford Coyote engine in any vet - just for spite... Okay, I earned my living as a Ford tech for over 25 years and am duly prejudiced. However, in the last 5 years as a wrench I worked in an independent shop that specialized in Ford products but worked on all domestics - it was then that I grew to really appreciate my favor toward Ford products and disfavor toward most everything with GM's name on it.

Okay - wearing my big boy pants so bring it on......

Nothing would make me happier than to put a GM LS in my 4Runner.

 

LS in a 4 Runner would be great more power same bad gas mileage.

 

You know, I wouldn't be surprised if the mileage was actually better. The thing with having all that extra power is that you wouldn't have to hammer on it nearly as hard as you do the four liter.

A GM motor in a Toyota? Nah...not me. I couldn't bring myself to do that to a Toyota product.

Now a 302 Ford in a 72 FJ40....

 

For an FJ40, just about anything is an improvement over the stock motor.

Yes, yes it is. I improved my old '73 by getting it bored & balanced and then reassembling it myself in my basement. And then putting another 100,000 miles on it before I sold it.

 

If I was sure the electronics wouldn't be a royal PITA, I'd kill to swap this into my truck. Already did one swap with a Ramjet into an AWD Safari c/w HD 4wd t-case, 4L80E and custom 9", but can't find a set of ballz to do it again.

One of the Guys at the place I work put an early LS1 in a Land cruiser and he went with Painless wiring, I gather that it was a bit pricey when all said and done but he drives it daily without opening the hood every other day to "correct" something.

 

Why not just put the Toyota 5.7 V8 in it? I wonder if it would fit?

My Safari weighed close to 5k lbs. With the rear-door mounted fullsize spare and rear seat removed, running on 31" AT's on widened OE steelies, I managed to eek out a 13.99 in the 1/4.

 

Well, if you're talking about a vehicle with no electronics like an FJ40, the great thing about the LS motors is that there are multiple standalone conversion kits for them to run the EFI and trans. Or, you can convert them to carbureted as well.

The Toyota motor would probably be kind of a pain dealing with the computer and electronics, but the aftermarket has solved this issue 20 years ago with the LS motors.

Not to mention how widely available they are. I haven't looked, but it's probably fairly difficult and expensive to get your hands on a running 5.7L Toyota. Meanwhile, in literally any junkyard you can find vehicles that have some version of a LS motor in it, or for a few k you can get a running driving Denali with a 6.0 in it. Plus, if you have the budget, GM is more than happy to sell you a crate motor ranging from mild to wild, and plenty aftermarket companies will build you one as well. Don't know that the Toyota has any support like that.

( I actually know somebody with an FJ40 that he restored that's running a 6.0 LS. The thing sounds nasty and he loves it)

Lastly, the LS is just easy to package. It has a relatively small physical size in relation to its displacement. If you look it under the hood of my 5.7 LS1 Firebird or my 4Runner, the 4.0 in the 4R looks physically larger.
