About to trade for a 2008 4runner - need some adivce

Sounds like a rip-off to me. V8 2008 is indeed hard to find, but you are looking at 10K to 14K depending on the mileage. Until you know the mileage it will be hard to get a number.

Even if their Runner is in immaculate shape (with rims and other stuff included) I wouldn't give more than 15K. And if its from a rust area, you can knock that # down too.

 

Hello! Thank you for the info. Looking at craigslist in southern California gave me some pretty high numbers. 14k for 4th gens with more than 200k and all the way up to 30k for ~90k miles. I just found out the mileage to be at 170k.

 

That's insane. If you're looking for V8 4Runner and you're looking at spending that much money, also look at the Lexus GX470.

 

I wasn't looking for one, he came to me when he came across my ad. I stated that I was open to trades for anything and his 4runner looked really nice. I just didn't know if it was worth 25k or not. I think being generous, I'd put it at maybe 18k. The lexus doesn't really interest me as much as the toyota does - not a fan of it's exterior or interior styling.

 

Just kings and bumper (as you mentioned) don't make it worth what he's considering it's worth. I wouldn't do the trade if you say yours is valued at 25k. As what most said, his is 15k, top maybe 18k as you mentioned. Also depends if all his maintenance is kept up to date. If you were actually in the market and kept an eye out, there are still deals to be had.

 

I have a 68k mile 2015 m235i. 6spd with red interior. Given the options, fair market value is hovering around 25k

 

I do however see that a 4runner (or most Toyota in general) in my experience will hold it's value better than a BMW will. For example, I sold my 1st gen tundra dc limited 4wd with only 150k (clean title, mint inside out) for $15k. I also have a 2012 BMW F10 535i sport and if I'm lucky I'll get 13k for it but for it's rarity maybe 15k. It's a color combination that I don't see around much, white w/ that cinnamon (reddish) interior. Has absolutely no issues and runs great for a 10yr old vehicle and has 100k mile. My 4th gen SE has 260k and runs very good for it's age will probably sell for the same if not more. But a car is only worth as much as someone is willing to pay.

 

Yeah depreciation is the main reason I plan on selling. I don't enjoy that much and the longer I hold onto it, the more it depreciates. And they depreciate HARD. So i got more info on the 4runner. He said he's got a custom 18" long travel kit and says that should push it to be atleast in the 20k range. What do you think?

 

My opinion may differ from yours. I don't like buying what other's have done, unless it's a exceptionally GREAT deal. Have him give you a full list of mods and any maintenance history. Then do research as to what others are selling/buying for w/ similar mods. You and only you can determine whether the price is good or not.

Just sounds like he is trying to screw you over. I mean I can't blame him for trying to find a good deal even if it is heavily weighted his favor. Id be like ill take your truck and 7K cash. Thats if you REALLY REALLY wanna V8 Runner.

Otherwise if I were you id list it on Autotrader, dealerships are starved for cars. I had a friend sold his 2003 E46 M3 with 95K miles to a dealer for 23K. Try to get cash for your ride man. Then you have a wider variety to pick from.

 

Here's another way to think about it...

If you sold your car for cash, and had 25K burning a hole in your pocket, would you specifically seek out a 2008 V8 4Runner with an 18-in long travel suspension? If the answer is no, then this is probably not the deal for you.
