I've never had Pliny, but the homebrew recipe makes a damn good DIPA. Not sure if its technically listed as a Double, but in my mind anything >= 8% ABV is a Double. Not sure where I'd start calling a beer a triple IPA, because anything beyond 8.5% is too boozy for my taste anyway.

I haven't found a triple I can stomach. They might be good for soaking brats though...

    Pliny is a double.

Triples usually start above 8.5% like you said.

I'm not a fan of TIPA's either. However, the trick to get them less boozy is to let them finish higher. That sweetness cuts the booziness and are slightly more tolerable. Slightly.

Yeah, I'd try Pliny the Younger if I had the chance. There are a fair number of Triples available around here, but I'm not gonna waste $20+ on a 4 pack of something I won't enjoy.

I remember buying a pack of Dogfish Head 120 IPA once. I either game them away or poured them down the drain.

Apparently there’s no official definition of a Triple IPA except for having lots of hops and grain and higher ABV. It’s kind of whatever the brewer decides to market it as. So, instead, the public has been using ABV as a rough gauge to define it.

In general, the Brewers Association defines an American India Pale Ale as having an ABV of 6.3%-7.5%, while an Imperial or Double IPA is in the 7.6%-10.6% range. Therefore a Triple IPA should have an ABV of about 10.5% and higher.

To me, a lot of TIPAs taste like medicine. Too hoppy and too bitter, made for hophead bragging rights. The high alcohol doesn’t bother me as long as the taste is agreeable. For high alcohol beers I prefer barleywines, imperial stouts, or strong ales. High alcohol, smoother, and lower IBUs. Like North Coast Brewing Old Stock Ale.

Or seasonal Lagunitas (Brown or Unrefined) Shugga’.

I’ve done that too many times. Now I buy single bottles at my local store when trying a new beer.

I miss the 22oz bomber days where you could just purchase 1 beer to try it out.

It's nice that some stores allow you to break a 4 or 6-pack of cans, but not everyone does this.

I've been stuck purchasing very high priced 4-packs and being very disappointed in the results :(

Yeah. My local market doesn’t allow breaking down 4 or 6 packs anymore.

But they’ve got a great selection. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.

Been enjoying this one. Taking a break from the high ABV brews.

I prefer session beers myself. That way you can sip them all day long.

Bombers are great, I used to get La Fin du Monde and Trois Pistoles as bombers. Never had any interest in buying the 4 packs. Wifey got me a case of La Fin du Monde back when we were dating and that was one of many signs that she was a keeper.

I've had Hopslam on a couple of occasions and it is just not my jam. I would happily try Pliny the Younger tho.

Yeah. There are so many beers from so many small breweries. Luckily in CA you can get singles at Trader Joe’s and Total Wine. Gotta try them all!

The only thing I don't like about Trader Joes is they warm store all their beer (at least the one's I've been to). That accelerates any oxidation, especially on hoppy beers. I can't buy a warm IPA.

How warm are you talking? I stocked up on some Florida beers and was planning on just keeping them in the basement until I get around to drinking them. Should I be keeping it refrigerated?

    Picture for... Uhh.. reference. :D

    That's a good haul!

I'm talking about room temperature, but generally speaking as you increase the temperature past refrigeration, you accelerate oxidation of the beer which usually presents itself as a stale cardboard (or paper-like) flavor.

This tends to happen quickest to hoppy beer.

If you don't have room for them all, store your hoppy beers in the fridge and leave the others out.

If you have the room, store them all in the fridge for maximum freshness

I think it's around 60° in my basement, so better than the garage I guess. Although, right now I'd be more concerned about it being too cold in the garage.

I didn't get any IPA's. Actually, there weren't many to choose from. I wonder if they're less popular with microbrews in Florida.

The coconut key lime ale was a hit last year so I got extra this time.

I left Florida less than 48 hours ago and I already want to go back.

Nice! I visited the Keys last year, and enjoyed it much more than I expected. The outdoor dining/beer drinking area at Islamorada was fun!

Just returned from a Viking River cruise from Budapest, Hungary to Regensburg, Germany on the Danube. Last day of the trip in Regensburg, there was an excursion called "Breweries of Bavaria". What a hoot that was - we visited two local breweries that only sell them at their establishment, along with various locally made sausage varieties, strudel, soft pretzels, etc. We got to try at least a dozen different beers, half a dozen different mustard varieties over a couple of hours. One of the highlights of the trip.
