how many of y'all 5th gen 4runner owners have and run 255/80R17 tire size before? Crazy is it's narrower than stock size tire and's a 33.1" tire.
It's not too common tire size dimension for 4runners I think but how many of y'all had experience w/ it and was any mods needed to be done to compensate for that tire size or can it run 100% stock.

I’m running 255/75/17 Ko2’s and I think it’s perfect for a mild lift. I haven’t noticed a difference in gas mileage and my speedometer is pretty much dead on maybe one or two off at 70. I thought about the 80’s and I’m glad I didn’t get them. I’d be rubbing for sure. This is as big as I’ll probably ever go. 1A8790EE-70B2-4DDC-ABE4-DB3A53B7B8C2.jpg

This size looks perfect. I was thinking 255/80/17, but I don't really want to go to 33's. Might be the best compromise. they also seem more available... Might be a more common size.

I know that this is an older thread, but if you are still around... Could you tell be how much lift that you have in this picture? I'm ordering the eibach PRO-TRUCK-LIFT System (Stage 1) I'm thinking that this will be a good tire option.

When compared to typical 285s, 255/80/17 are a little taller (33.3” on my Ridge Grapplers), slightly narrower, a little lighter weight, less rolling resistance, less rubbing/clearance issues, less stress on steering components, less scrub angle, and with a narrower contact patch there is more weight per square inch on the ground which results in more traction in most situations. If you spend a lot of time in sand and mud maybe an argument can made for the 285s because of floatation, but in reality you rarely actually want floatation. With flotation comes a big increase in frontal area that you’re using like a plow trying to push through mud/sand. That’s going to cause significantly higher rolling resistance and make it feel even more under powered and bogged down, plus you lose your ability to steer as you just kinda push through it. Snowmobiles for example handle the way they do by using a long skinny belt to propel it forward and long skinny skis to cut through so it can steer. From purely a performance standpoint a 255/80/17 is functionally a better tire choice than a 285/70/17 on a 5th Gen 4Runner. It’s becoming a more common size on 5th gens, but it’s not widely popular yet, too many people get caught up on the look of wider tire. Everyone thinks wide bulky tires look cool, and they do, but I’ll take practical function over vanity any day of the week.

One other thing worth mentioning is that tire manufacturers have a recommended range of wheel widths for each tire size and while I understand lots of people run 285s on (stock) rims narrower than recommended, it’s nice to have the correct fit that the tire manufacturer intended.

Been on 255/80/17 stock with absolutely no rub even at full lock. They are Cooper st max. Now with a Fox lift they look and work great for me. I think I posted a couple years back with pics at stock height. Hope this helps

I'm between 255/80/17 and 285/70/17 for my next set of tires.
But now y'all gotta throw a wrench in there. I had to go look at 255/75/17 tires. Seeing overall diameters for the 255/75 at:

    Cooper Disco AT3 = 31.97 inches 39lbs
    https://www.discounttiredirect.com/buy-tires/cooper-discoverer-at3-4s/p/36852

    Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac = 32.1 inches 43lbs
    https://www.discounttiredirect.com/buy-tires/goodyear-wrangler-duratrac/p/19992

    KO2's C Load = 32.05 inches 46lbs
    https://www.discounttiredirect.com/buy-tires/bfgoodrich-all-terrain-t-a-ko2/p/31430

    Falken Mud Terrains C load = 32.28 inches 54lbs
    https://www.discounttiredirect.com/buy-tires/falken-wildpeak-m-t01/p/26542

    My 265/70/R17 Falken Wildpeak AT3 SL's = 31.7 inches 46.5lbs.
    https://www.falkentire.com/tires/light-truck-suv-cuv-tires/wildpeaka/t3w-tire

Based on that. I'm going eliminate 255/75 from my consideration. Just not enough of a height increase to justify the switch.

In that picture I’ve got bilstein 5100’s all the way with 1.75 in front and 1” cornfed spacer in the rear. It worked great until I added a storage system in the back and a tent on top. Then I had to add more to the rear. Now I’ve got 2.5” in front and 1.5” plus the cornfed on top of that. And running 275/70/17 generals F78D873E-4AB9-462F-AFDA-918938B66F13.jpg

Bumping this thread... I'm gathering everything to go on my forerunner in the next 2 to 3 weeks. The plan is Bilstein 5100 at 1.75 in the front. eibach 1 inch rear coils...... Just ordered FN pro Wheels so now I need everyone's collective wisdom to tell me what tires will work with this lift and wheel setup.

I'm torn between 275 70 and 255 75. I'm not sure what will rub and what won't I would like to stay away from d load tires mainly because of the weight and I'm hoping that keeping the weight down will also mitigate any horrible losses in gas mileage. But......what size will rub with the zero offset wheels????

#1 If fitment is similar this may be useful.
#2 Perhaps 255/80/17 E, Daily Driver PSI & ride comfort, on the Gen4/Gen5 4R platform is useful.

I'm a Gen4 4Runner but Just installed 255/80/17s Falken Wild Peak AT3W on my truck last week. They weigh 52 lbs. each. I'm still getting used to them, trying to find the right PSI for everyday driving. Keeping my stock Sport wheels (17"x7.5" +30 offset) to save money was important. I already had a body mount chop but its not necessary. I can report on MPG soon.

I wish a manufacturer made 255/80/17 in "C" or "D" rating to save on wight and ride comfort and allowing a little more tire squish when airing down.

I wish the Falken, Wild Peak AT3W had more sizes and load ranges available in skinnier sizes. I just put my first 30 miles on the tires inflated at 41psi (barley warm) with a quality digital gauge. Traveled half 60-65 w/o Cruise control then on the the return trip was all 65 w/cruise control. Toyota Digial MPG calculator lies but says I got 20.1mpg. its usually about 1.5mpg optimistic. Not bad over all. I'll do a mixed and a city run later. Eventually calculate "fill to fill."

@CoffeeJoe please keep us updated. I'm looking to install the exact same tire on my FJ Cruiser, currently running 285/70/17 KO2s and wanting to go skinny!

I had Cooper ST MAXX pizza cutters on my FJ and loved them! I do miss my FJ...pay no attention to the rotted and rusted sliders.

255/85-16's. Worked great here in Colorado. And the Coopers were much better than the KM2's I originally put on. The KM2's cupped badly after 25-30k miles.

I think this is a fantastic tire size, I dig the look of the narrow tire. I only wish they made some options that weren't all E-rated. I really considered these for mine when I got tires, but I just didn't want to go with that heavy of a tire.

So would 255/80-17 require BMC/fender mods on a stock TRD ORP suspension or mild lift say 1.5-2.75 (front) & 1.0-2.0 (rear)?

No BMC. I had to remove my front mud flap before I lifted it. Not sure what the clearance would be with a lift and front mud flap.

I went through your build link, great build. I feel like with the a mild lift, I should be fine if you ran stock height and only had to remove the mud flap. I just need to verify my speedo via GPS. Any recommendations for GPS verification?

I've got about 180 miles on the new my new 255/80/17 Falken, WildPeak AT3W tires. I've not played with the air pressure much yet. I think I'm right at 40psi cold. The E-rated Falkens are definitely stiffer. It's not too bad but that's prob. because the roads I travel on are decent. I might try and run them a little lower psi (35-38psi).

I can feel their weight a little more in terms of stopping. I need to break a little harder or start breaking a little earlier. The brakes can handle it. I'll just have to adjust after 10 years with nearly stock tires.

I loved the 265/70/17 Cooper, Discoverer, AT3 (M+S) Passenger-rated tires that just came off. (Still 60% tread) but I wanted a taller tire that would fit my lift.

I finally put in my first full tank of fuel so we'll see how my real combo city/hwy mileage averages out but, the lying dash MPG calculator says is about 13.5 MPG city/hwy.

My speedo was off from the factory and surprisingly, it is spot on now! I used a GPS Speedo app on my phone. Forget which one it is, but you can also use Waze as well I believe.

Though I don't have the size you're getting, I do have wild peaks in SL. Only 200 miles on them so far and have been pleased with road manners and sound.

Here are the Toyo open country AT/3 with a 2.5”-2” lift. E-rated, but only 50lbs. I don’t notice a rough ride with the e rated.

I was looking at the 255/80 wild peaks as well, but I think they were a little bit heavier, and one review on Amazon with pics showed they were only 32”..wasn’t sure what to make it of since that was the only place it was mentioned…but if I wanted to go with 32” I would have just done 275/70s.
