License plate screw size

Does anyone have the confirmed size of the license plate screws for a 2020? I want to order some true security screws since tag theft is becoming a trend here. Thanks.

Stealing license plates? Seriously?

My gosh what smucks get a life. Do they do this and simply put on another car to avoid paying their own fee? I don’t see the benefit?

 

You need M6 Bolts not screws. Amazon link from first reply for plastic bumper and wont work on your tailgate.

Yes....used on stolen cars, boat trailers, used to avoid paying tolls, etc. I have had 2 plates stolen in the last year.

 

I put these on mine too. Plate was also stolen in southern MD for who knows what... these are better security for sure

 

ahh that makes sense with toll roads.

What scum bags. I suppose this petty crime will get worse too with our inflation

What am I missing here? These just look like torx screws. How are they antitheft?

 

The Amazon links are Torx. The Screwd are not. They have a unique pattern....you cannot get the tips for them locally. I also have these on my cat plates on my Tundra.

Just to add for peoples' awareness who also happen to come by here, McMaster Carr has security bolts and requisite drive bits if you dont like the above torx-adjacent type screw.

Also, dont know about the 5th gen but my rear license plate holder area only has backing nuts tack welded to to the top two holes, so I drilled two more and added the machine screw version of the safety screws as well. Aint f'ing around with those thieves again

 

For those who have the renewal "stickers": After applying a renewal sticker to the license plate, I take a razor and cut three diagonal lines across the sticker. If the would-be thief notices the cuts, which would come off in pieces, he might go elsewhere. Plastic covers and security screws/bolts would also help. While not full-proof, it all adds time in the attempt to steel the plate and/or sticker. So the thief may look elsewhere for an easier target.

License Plate Frames: Over many years, I've purchased my license plate frames from California Car Cover. While a little on the pricey side, their frames are first rate. But the best part is that you can purchase the frames in either two-screw or four-screw pattern. JFYI

 

hopefully it does not happen to any of us moving forward.. most thieves would more and likely have a phillips screwdriver or flat head.. having a torx or unique pattern will help deter them away for an easier target vehicle.. as stated above I always slice my tags too..

 

The pin inside that torx bolt prevents you using regular torx bit unless thief did homework and bought hollow type security torx bit.

 

They should make metal ones with a electrical wire and give the thief the shock of his life. Unreal.

 

or for better peace of mind get the digital plate.. no tags, electronic renewal, can change the plate to read "stolen" if stolen, built in GPS to find car.. etc etc..

Did you go with the 12mm? Wondering if they would clear a license plate frame as well.

 

I'll double check when I get home but I believe the 12mm is what I bought. They fit fine and ours has a frame as well.

 

Thanks I appreciate it, I measured what the dealer put on and was 14mm of thread so if 12 works I am a happy camper. Trying to find some bolts that don’t rust. The ones from the dealer rusted in 3 months on my wife’s rav. I wish to swap all of them on both our Toyota’s. Not worth the hatch rusting to shit either

 

Mine are the 16 mm. The 12 was out of stock at the time. The 12 should be plenty long enough.
