Side mirror swap to add turn signal and puddle lamp

    Anyone with a 21 or newer get the puddle lights to work? I got Tanner‘s harness, went back-and-forth over the phone testing all connections and terminals with a volt meter. Turn signals work great but it seems, at least Tanner thinks, that Toyota coded it out on the 2021 and possibly newer model years.

    I used Tanners harness on my ‘21 TRD Pro. Blinkers and puddle lights work great. Puddle lights illuminate when I approach the truck with the key fob on my person. My truck was built fist week of July 2021.

    Side mirror swap to add turn signal and puddle lamp

    It's a long list...
    That's my working theory at this point. Whether or not that is correct requires more data. I have noticed more and more features are now "programmed" vs physical circuitry on the refresh that was introduced for the 20MY.

    @Bobafett you and I checked everything for continuity, grounds, etc. and we couldn't get the puddles to light up. No 12V output from the main body ECU. What was the build date on your 2021?

    I should also add that @Old Red is an absolute stand up guy. He bent over backwards trying to help me out and even refunded my purchase (which I wasn’t happy about due to the amount of work he put in lol) My build date is Jan. 2021

    These side mirrors with turn signals and puddle lamps come standard with the ORP. For thousands of dollars more you would think they would be included with the PRO trim. Very strange.

    Especially when TRD Pros delivered to Canada are equipped with them. That’s why I don’t think Toyota would significantly change the wiring between them. It does seem like the harness that goes from the front kick panel area and into the door is what’s changed.

    Well, that makes it double-strange. Why Canada and not U.S. deliveries ?? Ultimately, sounds like a question only Toyota could answer.

    You would be surprised. Toyota does weird stuff for no apparent reason when they package trims. Why not dual zone climate control on the premium trims in the U.S? Canada has that standard on all 4Runners, there are no base trims for them. Why created 20 variations of a wiring harness, why not just 1. It would be more "Kaizen". You would be correct, they change the peripheral harnesses more than the main dash/body.

    The wiring inside the doors is actually different depending on year, trim, and from what I can tell maybe production date. That said, the individual circuits did not change from 20-22MY, only additional wiring was added for touch handles, etc. The main dash should be the same for that specific trim level (i.e. SR5 & SR5 premium share the same dash harness 14-19MY) When I was doing my research initially this is what I found based on year, and at looking at the post 2020 refresh.

    2014-19MY

    3X Door harness types

    Specific Trim levels shared dash harnesses, but peripheral wiring was trim dependent

    A- Base model/TRD Pro, no premium mirrors

    B- Premium model, upgraded mirrors

    C- Limited, Touch handles, memory seat, upgraded mirrors

    Now for 2020-21MY they continued that layout from 14-19MY, except when they did an ignition changeover mid model year from standard key on base trims to standard push button start.

    4X Door harness types

    D- Base model, no premium mirrors, regular key (Early 21 only; not sure of changeover date)

    E- Base model/TRD Pro, no premium mirrors, Touch handles

    F- Premium trim, upgraded mirrors, touch handles

    G- Limited (Premium + memory seats)

    2022MY

    5X Door harness types

    H- Base model, touch handles, Regular mirrors

    I- TRD Pro, touch handles, regular mirrors, BSM, MTM

    J- Premium Trim, touch handles, upgraded mirrors, BSM

    K- Premium Trim, touch handles, upgraded mirrors, BSM, Panoramic monitor

    L- Limited, touch handles, upgraded mirrors, BSM, Panoramic monitor, memory seats

    This is what is leading me to believe it might be trim programmed in the Body ECU for 2021 because even with physical circuitry present and hooked up, there is no function. Again this is theory at this point.

    Need to check with Red on his current price for his harness. But the most expensive part are the side mirrors. They are about $200 each from a dealer new. I’m sure you can find used ones online.

    2014 Neglected by the previous owners 2020 is an abused former rental... 2023 New I've been buying above my pay grade ☹️
    I wasn't thinking about puddle lights, but I did take a look at Morimoto sequential light modules (p/n: XB LED Side Mirror Lights). That added with a new mirror cover (Toyota part 8794542160B0) would probably work on terms of housing, but I don't know about the harness thing. Is there a separate harness for the turn signal and pedal light? Is there an open connection floating in there?

    If I could just do a straight replacement and use an existing harness, I'm looking at under $200 for the project.

    As for the lights, I have a friend who has been using Morimoto on his Toyotas for years with no problems. Apparently they give a lifetime warranty as well. I am a newbie, do not know all the inside terms and connections for all of these mods, I'm thinking more out of practicality and safety than trying to look cool.

    I finally got the upgrade done. Had some stock mirrors but upgraded to the limited one (puddle, turn, heated) and they all work like a charm. All I'm missing now is the scooped hood for my wife MGM runner. Thanks to those that helped me (none )

    Do you know what it would take to add memory seats for the driver's side to a 22 trd pro?
    Would just the harness/door panel need to be changed or the whole seat as well? ECU?

    It's a lot of work and money for one simple feature.

    In short, you would need the entire seat.

    -The motors in the limited seats have the ability to sense position vs the standard motors.
    -The seat switch on the Limited seats is CAN Bus enabled vs the standard seat switch which is simply power/ground

    -Main body ECU: This one is tricky because the vehicles that have crawl control have the MS-BUS enabled on this ECU, as does the Limited for the memory seat. What is unknown is if the TRD ECU contains the programming necessary for memory seats, or if the limited ECU will allow communication for the Crawl Switch (you may only be able to have one feature, not both.)

    You would need the switch, and a door panel for the switch to go in if you wished to mount it in the factory position. You would also need the following wiring;

    -New seat wiring harness for memory (I think it's a total of 2 or 3 harnesses for the power seats; one in the base, one in the back)
    -Wiring from the seat to the ECU
    -Wiring from the ECU to the switch.

    Case in point, there's a big unknown with the ECU, and half the individual parts you need only come as a seat assembly.

    Hope that helps give an idea of what is needed.

    It does indeed look like it would take a lot and not necessarily worth the trouble. Too bad because it's definitely a feature that would've been nice to have, though not critical.

    Wife is 4'11", she doesnt usually drive the truck but it's nice to have her drive on long road trips so I can relax for a bit. Because of her height, she literally has to change every single position (forward, up, incline, etc..) so it takes a few minutes for me to get the seat back to my position when I jump back in the driver seat :frustrated: Oh well...

    I think the reason it wasn't included on other 4Runner trims was multi-factorial. For one I think it was a "separating" feature for the limited vs other trims, and I also think it was something that was kept for the GX460 so that if you really wanted all the creature comforts "we have a vehicle for you" lol.

    I agree, it would be nice to have, and should have been standard.

    Don't take my previous post as "It can't be done, not worth it". Merely giving an idea of the components needed if you just want to swap stuff directly. The goal is to keep the cost at a reasonable level.

    If you can find a used Limited/GX460 seat that has the bags blown and you don't care about the upholstery, just strip it down and snag the motors, seat harness, and seat switch. Everything should in theory bolt up to your current seat frame as I am 99% confident they are the exact same seats. All that would be needed would be adding a few wires from the seat switch to the main body ECU, and the switch to main body ECU. I think on the 20+ trims after everything became push start that it might be a 1 size fits all Body ECU, but I need to check part numbers to confirm.

    I wouldn't bother trying to swap door panels for a single switch though, I would just find a place to mount it where it made more sense like on the seat trim near the actual adjust switch.

    i agree 100%. I was mainly speaking at a personal level.
    But yes there’s always a way! It just depends how much money and time one wants to invest in something.
    I was hoping it would be more plug and play without changing/buying to many things
