Suggestions for new hitch for ORP

So I bought a new 21 ORP last summer and plan to tow my boat this spring. The boat is 18ft Crestliner and weighs 1,500lbs plus motor and trailer.

I am looking for some advice on a quality hitch insert to buy that hopefully will not vibrate etal and fit properly

Below is a pic of my old Explorer hitch where the “shank” if you will is about 15” off the ground. The top of ball is another 18” off the ground. This was while parked on level surface.

Has anyone used a B&W hitch? Any thoughts? I don’t mind spending money for something quality.

I thought of getting an adjustable hitch in case I ever rent a Home Depot trailer etal

In addition I am going to need some type of wiring extension to plug in. I have the old school square pin style light with only a foot or two of wiring on the tongue of the trailer

 

That expensive adj thing is a huge waste of $$ for what you need! I tow a 2500lb cargo trailer for work on almost a daily basis and I wouldn't want that mostly due to the risk of theft as it is so expensive. Yes I could lock it but the lock would just rust in Mn winter and I would end up cutting it off!
Your truck and your $$ but it's totally overkill, even the cheap brands from Home Depot or Harbor Freight would be more than enough.
I have a name brand hitch insert and it works great, no rattles. I do remove it occasionally when I'm not towing and I spray it with metal protector [some Amsoil stuff]

If I was you I would probably cut off the square plugs permanently connect the wiring and shove the connections into the trailer next. Make sure to use waterproof connectors-

As far as the hitch goes....I have multiple hitches I use (cheaper) rather than using a adjustable hitch.

 

Yeah you can get what you need from uhaul or harbor freight for about $50. You need the mount, ball the either a lock shift thing or cotter pin one to hold the mount shift.

 

I bought this one for my Tacoma. It worked great, but I have not needed to use it on the 4Runner yet.

Thanks guys I don’t have electric brakes on trailer it’s an old school 1990 and I am blessed to inherited this boat (well my Dad and I did) from my Grandfather.

I never thought about someone stealing hitch that would be awful after coming in from fishing.

I think I need that wire extension as mentioned. Maybe I could use that until I get boat home. How do you know what length you need to prevent dragging on ground. Sorry if dumb question. My old Explorer had the wiring inside the cargo area just closed the tailgate on it.

I need to measure 4R hitch again but I thought it was 22” to top of mount delm ground so I was thinking maybe 4” drop is what I need.

 

My 4runner connection accepts the round adapter and also accepts just the plug end. I was surprised it is ready for both. It is rare for people to steal the hitch but good to be secure. I actually read a post from a guy who had the axel stolen off his jetski trailer at the boat ramp. Crazy things can happen.

 

You can guestimate. I would hook up the trailer and follow the sag of the safety chains. I would have the wire sag less than the chains.

If you "Hard wire" as I suggested above, you can just shove the excess wire into the neck of the trailer.

 

That’s a good idea about following the sag of the safety chains.

I would need to get someone to do a re wire. I am not that handy unfortunately.

I found these locking hitch pins to be rattle free. If you need multiple you can get them keyed the same. They are high quality.

I think our 4Runners can accept both the 4 pin square and the round 7 pin connectors, so all you would need is an extender which are sold for cheap on Amazon. As someone said, just stuff any excess into the trailer tongue.

Also, here's a video to figure out what kind of drop you need for your hitch. Just do the measurements and get the proper $20-$30 hitch+ball and you'll be good to go.

that’s a great video thank you. I just need to watch a few more times it was so fast. My boat is about 50 miles away so I will have to go see it before towing or get a multi adjust hitch.

I just assumed that the height of my old Explorer hitch after 20 years of towing would be proper. I had a boat dealer set that up for me. I will take a level with me when I pick up my boat too. Time to make a list for spring. Thanks guys

 

I switched the flat 4 prong plug on my boat trailer to the round 7 pin.
Use the extra wires to plug into my boat and charge the batteries while driving.
Comes in handy when up north camping.
