Folks help me out here please. I agree that the sound of the engine under acceleration is greatly improved with the TRD or any other aftermarket (AM) intake. I have found that there is also an improvement, albeit not as great, with just adding a high flow filter like AEM or K&N. Since the TRD fits the same location on the inner fender wall, why not just drill lots of holes in the stock box? From a purely physical perspective, you can only push so much air down a certain diameter pipe without a booster pump and since these systems are passive the only way to do is by a less restricted filter media to increase the velocity of air into the engine. Has anyone ever seen specs on much much more cubic feet of air per minute (under full throttle) the TRD or any other AM system can deliver over the stock? What I dont see at AEM or K&N, is the particle size filtration specs like some manufactures do for cabin filters, such as 5 micron. Isn't that what we're after in the air filter? Has anyone ever seen these particle filtration sizes? Has anyone ever read what particle size the filter media should remove to protect the engine? Thanks.

Blacked out badges, window deflectors, smoked 3rd brake light. I have a Borla muffler on order as well as some color matched engine cover stickers. I'll be painting the stock wheels soon as well. Falken tires in the fall as well.

Thanks much Blue 4ever, most excellent and just what I was looking for. I think I'll stick with the dry paper filters. I might pick up a used stock filter box and experiment with drilled holes. Happy 4 wheeling.

You would be sucking hot air from the engine compartment, yes, no?

It will if he drills a bunch of holes in it.

I have both the CAI and exhaust. Yes there is a drone when under load or when I jump on the gas. I kind of like it because it feeds the old man race car that’s left in me.

I ordered an AEM air filter directly from AEM ($40 free shipping) and my paypal account was charged to K&N Engineering, so essentially the AEM Air Filter is a DRY version of the OILED K&N Air Filter, it even looks the same, except its not pink or oiled. I went with the dry version because on my last 4Runner, I had an MAF Wire break due to oil buildup, and the Toyota dealership recommended not using an oiled filter.

Wouldn't cutting off the resonators on the stock intake and plugging/covering the holes get you the sound you want from a CAI and actually be a CAI(oem) for minimal $ ? Just a simple mod I would think. Or will this throw codes?

You have to piece it together for the 4Runner.

Came across this thread, seems to be reviews from both ends of the spectrum. As for “is it worth the money”, I would say it depends on how much you have lol. My question now that this thread is over a year old. If you had a 2021 4 runner limited, and had some money to spend, would you do this TRD Intake mod? I’m on the fence. Sounds like it doesn’t add enough power to tell a difference. Why about the sound? Very noticeable ?

Get your choice of aftermarket filter (like a K&N) and an intake tube and you have the same thing. It’s a lot of money for pretty much nothing. You have a cold air from the factory (pretty much every vehicle does). It takes cold air from under the vehicle and feeds it to your intake box. End of the day, it’s your money. If you want the look and it’s worth the crazy price to YOU it is absolutely worth it.

Got it and agreed. After thinking about it and having the money to spend, I think you right. It’s just something that looks cool under the hood and that’s about it outside of not having to change the air filter. But I can get the same benefit with a $50 K&N air filter to your point. Thanks for your input!

Does anyone know if the TRD cold air intake affect the warranty?

It does not, although if your in California some Smog shops won’t smog the vehicle with the cold air intake. Some do, some doing. But either way doesn’t affect warranty.

Thanks for the info. I lived in El Paso, so I am good. My second and third question is Does it fit the 2022 and is it worth it?

I have a 2021 and it fit, the 2022’s from what I’m told are identical. As for us it worth it, depends. I always look at cost versus benefit. With the cost being around $380, that’s expensive for most. As for the benefit, it looks super coolX however it’s under the hood and no one see’s it. The performance it brings is minimal. When I step on the gas pedal it sounds slightly different than before, and I think it’s a little more responsive. But I know it’s installed and it may just be me. Like when you get a car wash and it feels like your car drives better.

Documented 5 whp and 19 lb ft of torque on an otherwise stock 4Runner. But, ask anyone who has spent time around a dyno, there are lot's of variables involved.

So are those figures accurate? Hard to say with out several dyno pulls with different 4Runners under varying conditions, and to my knowledge that experiment has not been done.

So not really worth the money in most peoples eyes. You might feel the extra torque on a nice cool morning, but it's not gonna gain you much else.

So Toyota Says... 2020 TRD Pro 4Runner... the green tape is where I had to remove the wires from the harness to make it reach the MAF sensor ( I have since covered it with proper wrap).

Yeah But it gives More Smiles Per Miles than Raptor lights and that is one heck of a "Performance" improvement.

TRD stopped making it for the Runner years ago. You can piece it together yourself though. 22 is the same engine and layout since 2010 so it will work.

Sound cool, defiantly not worth it. It’s a supporting mod. Personal and probably factual opinion

Although it was offered on the FJ, as far as I know it was never offered on a 4Runner. A TRD Pro that doesn't come with a TRD intake. SMH.
You can piece one together and save a few bucks as @whippersnapper02 mentioned.

Certain Toyota dealers have a 25% off sale thru the end of March. I believe its SE Toyota dealers. They also have a free shipping offer (code FREESHIP) on orders over $75. The intake would qualify for that.
I just bought two new brake calipers $115 each, which is cheap for OEM. Used the free shipping and saved even more.
These are the parts you will need for the intake:
    PTR03-35090-AA
    PTR03-35090-AF
    PTR03-35090-AC
    PTR03-89100-AA
    PTR03-89100-AB
Edit: these part numbers are old. Cannot confirm they fit newer vehicles.
