What will the 6th gen do to the resale value of a 5th gen?

It may be 2+ years before there’s a 6th gen at dealers but once they do come out what will that do to the resale value of the 5th gens?

A large percentage of 4Runner buyers seem to prefer certain characteristics.

A true BOF design for real off road capabilities

A NA engine that is tried and true, will last 200-300,000+ miles with routine maintenance.

A transmission that won’t fail and isn’t overly complicated and searching for gears nonstop.

    That’s just the beginning….

Personally, if I was in charge, I’d introduce the new model alongside a heritage version of the 5th gen, at least for a few years. With 120k units annually, surely there is still a customer base looking for the older models. And you don’t want the used market taking precedence over a new product.

Honestly I think the resale value will go down. Yes, some people will seek out the older models, but generally people want the latest and greatest, and previous generations are a big visual cue that it's outdated.

Go look at used values now. What costs more, an early 5th gen or a later 4th gen? People want the newest style.

This is what I was thinking, at least this is what happens with just about every other vehicle. I wasn’t sure if the 4Runner broke the rules. I remember when I was shopping for a Tacoma I didn’t see much of a difference in price between a 2015 (2nd gen) vs a 2016 (3rd gen). Not sure if people remember in 2010 if something similar happened.

6th gen will be a radical change in the eyes of 4Runner owners/fans. There’s never been a turbo 4, 8sp transmission, mild hybrid, etc. That’s why I recommended a dual release when seriously altering one of the true remaining BOF vehicles, CAFE standards be damned. It would ease the pain for the old school die hards.

I very well may be wrong. but only time will tell.

My father and a few buddies who are die hard Jeep guys think it’s dumb and by the time you put 38” to 40” tires and all the armor on your Jeep the gas mileage kills it for any long duration off roading trips.

    ———

Depends on how well the 6th Gen performs. If you look at the older generations of 4R and Tacomas they both hold their value. I was looking at late 80s 4R for a rock crawling build. They’re still asking $16k for them. There are 2nd Gen Tacomas out there that they’re asking $25k.

I do think it will have an effect but I don’t think it will kill the resale value. Plus I plan to keep my 4R until at least 300k miles. So I’m not worried about it.

I doubt anyone who buys that hellish Jeep gives a crap about gas mileage.

    My 5th Gen gets 14.

    My 80 gets 11.

It about running your tank to low on a trail and getting super off camber enough to not get fuel being pumped (happened to a guy recently with a 392) and the duration you can spend on a trail or how much fuel you have to bring. It’s not just my Jeep gets bad mpg it’s bout running out of fuel on the trail.

It starts to matter if the other Jeeps and Toyotas in your group have a much further range.

392 trail equipped (armor, winch, bumpers,38 to 40” tires) with camping gear is going to get 8mpg or less. My Taco gets 13mpg when I’m off roading. Took my 4R off roading for the first time today :D. Don’t have a mpg baseline yet.

This isn’t the Outback. You’re not going to run out of gas on a trail unless you puncture your tank or forget to fill up before going out.

I think we do different types of off roading.

We will do Moab and the Rockies like you said no big deal you can find gas. We will also do trips in the Mojave or similar places where it will be hundreds of trail miles over days and gas stations have to be mapped or you will run out of gas before you make it to one.

These threads remind me of all the sports channels' pregame shows. They spend endless hours telling us what the outcome of the big game is going to be and why, and are often wrong. No one's going to know 'til the 6th gen, if ever, arrives.

It is fun to talk about and brain storm. Why else would we be on a random Internet forum but to talk to each other.

Oh, I'm not saying we can't kick that can around. But nobody has the definitive answer. I would've sworn this was another @The last breed thread when I first saw the title...

I could care less what a 6th, 7th or 8th gen does to the value of my 5th gen. For those of us who keep our vehicles long term, it doesn’t matter. What matters is how well you have taken care of your vehicle. And unmolested (stock) vehicles will be worth more, IMHO.

I think if they move 4R production to Mexico and make the changes to a turbo engine etal that the core 4R buyer will likely be nervous to be a first to put down their cash.

Sure they will still sell some units but it will take certain period of time to get repeat buyers back. In addition new potential buyers read forums like these and will see these threads and get skittish I would think.

To me a new plant, body, engine and trans in a 4Runner is almost as scarey buying a new Bronco. Sure it may look cool but I don’t want to spend my spare time and money at a dealership arguing with a manufacturer over a defect.

If sales prices of the "obsolete" Land Cruiser 80 series are any indication, owners of 5th Gen. 4R's need not worry about what the 6th Gen will do to 5th Gen. values. Gil

After seeing what they think the 6th gen may look like, and the hybrid/turbo/etc, I bought a 2022 instead of waiting. I think the 5th gen is just a perfect style. I predict the resale value may go down at first, but then will shoot up. People 15 years from now will be drooling over a clean 5th gen much like old broncos. Oooor gas will be so expensive it’ll be impossible to daily drive a gas vehicle to force everyone to go full electric and we’re all screwed.

Yeah I fear we will have rolling blackouts of power grids like California and have to schedule timing to charge our cars and the cost of electricity will most likely sky rocket as it is in Europe.

I will stick with my gas burning cars until the end.

    California’s solution?

Just don’t use electricity between 4-9 pm, even during a heat wave.

Blacked out badges, window deflectors, smoked 3rd brake light. I have a Borla muffler on order as well as some color matched engine cover stickers. I'll be painting the stock wheels soon as well. Falken tires in the fall as well.
Personally it doesn't matter to me as this will be the last vehicle I ever buy. As long at it doesn't get totaled it will out last me for sure so resale isn't a thing to me. In general though, I think the 5th gen will always have a huge fan base and people will pay for the vehicle they really want/need/enjoy. It also depends on what changes are made. Most of the concepts I've seen are butt ugly so no matter what tech or mechanical improvements they make, if it's fugly to most Runner fans the 5th gen will have high resale for the foreseeable future.

I'm guessing it won't be affected for a while or it'll go down. Possibly geographically dependent. Most people I know around here and see with 4Runners are likely not concerned with a body on frame design (or even know what the hell that means), a naturally aspirated engine (no clue there either), or aren't in the ownership for the long run. They want the new stuff to haul the kids in and get groceries (no real off-roading opportunities around here and pick up trucks reign supreme for anything off pavement).

Either way, it'll be the same as always. Dealers/sellers will try to get the most for any vehicle and if people are buying, then buyers are setting the high resale value. See dealer markups for reference. They're still selling. And don't discount future covid variants and what can happen to the economy, which could greatly influence things (as we already see now). Our 5th gens may have more time as the current model than we realize.
