Well, I took a computer class in highschool. We had a teletype terminal connected to the mainframe in the office. The mainframe was a cube about 1.5 meters on a side. Sat right in the middle of the office, and they had a heck of a time keeping papers, and peoples butts off it. It would overheat easily.
The school used it for keeping grades, attendance, and so on. We mostly played Star Trek on it, using a punch tape to program it. We all had little cases with our individual, private punch tapes in them, and a rack with the schools punch tapes.
Had to dial the number on a regular telephone, you know, with the circular dial? Once you got the "computer sound", put the handset into the cradle, the two big rubber cups on one side, on the terminal and away you went.

Of course noone EVER used the terminal to hack into the office mainframe and check/change grades or attendance records for people. Not even. Nope, none of that <ahem>

Yuma never really got computers while I was there. Only thing close was terminals for Supply. They connected to the Marine Corps network, again, with the phone in the cradle set up. It was only after I got out that computers took off in the Corps. Remember, we are the Navy's unwanted, redhaired, stepchild. We got everything last, including funding. If the Navy upgraded a system, we got the previous versions. I guess the Navy figured a bunch of stupid grunts didn't need, or could use, computers.
Heck, 99% of the paperwork done in the offices was still done on manual, mechanical, OLD, typewriters. Not even electrics.

I regret that day when I said no them, I had score of 91 on ASVAB, and got nervous they would send me to Afghanistan. They even told me they would expedite my Citizenship case to as less as three 2 years I think.

It's not too late, I've heard of 40 something's joining the military. Just need a couple waivers. All you have is Syria & Africa to worry about now. There's still shooting going on in both places.

I met few guys that had gotten their citizenship via the US Army in Iraq. One was an Australian who had previously served as an Australian Officer before enlisting in the US Army.

 

Parts of Africa been in turmoil for such a long time like the wild wild west. Sign up @The last breed it will be an eye opening experience for you.

Anyhow, I used to want all sorts of cars, then I owned most of them, usually at a time before they became collectible ($4k for a 69 Z28, joys of being old...er). As James May once said, driving a vintage car is really a waste of time. Everyone else gets to enjoy looking at it, but, you're stuck driving it, dealing with poor ventilation, overheating, crappy gearboxes, etc. As a kid, I loved the E Type, I finally got to drive one. Bleah. No thanks. Horrible car, and slower than a modern Camry. Great if you want to hang it on the wall and look at it.

Now, I'd want something hand built, using a mix of classic styling and modern hardware. I dunno, maybe a Subaru powered Beck Spyder.

Offroad? I have friends with Pinzis, Unimogs, military and civilian HMMVs, and they're fine, single purpose vehicles, but that's not really the life we live, is it.

I'd probably go for either:

Fully restored FJ-80 with a modern diesel engine.

Fully restored D110 with a modern diesel engine.

For now, the 4R is pretty good, and I was able to buy it new, so, it doesn't need a full restoration! I can save the money to buy some land.

 

My guess is there will be a couple of major global conflicts in the next five years. Have no idea how it will all play out. Idiots developing more first strike weapons are not helping.

 

Actually, they're trying, at least in the Marine Corps boot camp, to accomplish a few things.
They need to break you down physically, so they build you up much stronger, and with a lot of endurance.
They need to do the same thing emotionally. They don't need some whiner cowering behind the other men, or a wall, when the bullets are flying around their ears, crying out "No, WAIT! I wasn't ready!"
They need to get you ready for that time, mentally, physically, and emotionally. Developing a strong esprit-de-corps is a huge part of that. It's incredibly encouraging and reassuring KNOWING that the guys down the line to either side of you will do everything in their power, including killing or dieing, for YOU, just as you would for them.
By the time you graduate boot camp, presuming you do, you do know that. The others know it of you as well.
White, black, brown....you're all Marine Green. The rest matters not.

If you can't take some guy yelling in your ear, calling you names, maybe even giving you a light love tap, how will you handle some group of enemy bearing down on you, firing weapons AT you, screaming at the top of their lungs how they're going to cut your guts open and strangle you with them? The worst thing about hearing bullets flying around you is the fact that you can't see them. You know that at any moment one of those cracks that you hear might be the last thing you ever hear. You know the bullets are real, they're kicking up dirt around you, you just need to rely on your buddies to fight just as hard to save you as you are for them. Why? Not because they're your friends, you may even dislike the other guys around you, some intensely, but because they're fellow MARINES.

The first day, and night, of boot camp are the best way they have found to begin that whole process. It only gets harder, and easier, from there. Believe me. I went through very shortly after that movie was made. The boot camp part was pretty accurate.

Pat, I'm not sure when you went through basic, but I went in May of 79. A 50/50 mix of Vietnam vet drill instructors, when I watched FMJ, I wondered where were the cameras in boot camp? The 'experience' was non-replaceable! Semper Fi to all past, present & future Marines..... Carry on! BTW.. 'love tap'? Ya sure.

 

I went through, well, first night, was July of 78. It was still 3 months then. And yeah, 2 of the three DI's were Viet Nam vets. Heck, one, SSGT Jordan, had been back more than once. He didn't talk about it, but when he wore Alphas, the had ribbons all the way up one side, half way up the other. Had an Oakleaf on his Viet Nam Service ribbon! Saw him shoot a 4" group from the 500 yard line at Pendleton. One handed, off-hand. Like it was a pistol. The recruit had been complaining that his rifle was screwing up, that's why he couldn't hit squat. SSgt. Jordan showed him otherwise! Needless to say, WE were awestruck!
Had a "house of ill repute" up in Oceanside. Offered a freebie to the cherry boys after graduation

Our senior only (!) had ribbons up one side, but he was a great guy. We were his last platoon (1058!). Got run over by a deuce and a half on that long straight road into Pendleton while changing a tire. Sucked.

Anywho, Yeah, love taps One of the platoons in the series had a really short DI. First day, he walked up to the tallest, biggest, guy in the platoon, and told him to pick the DI up. He did, the DI belted him across the jaw. Put him out like a polled ox. Love tap

Yeah, I wondered where the cameras had been too. They even used the same barracks! I could have sworn it was the one we had been in once we got back from Pendleton. From ITS.

Sorry, LOTS of memories burned into my little brain from boot camp. Good and bad. Some of the bad seem to turn to good over the years, too

Yup!

What worried me was when my daughter was stationed at Pendleton, her and her friends would go out to Oceanside to party. I told her to stay away from SSgt. Jordan. Even showed her a picture from my boot camp's yearbook of him. I really, REALLY wanted her to stay away from him. A tall, slender blonde, good lookin? She'd have been a real quality filly to add to his stable!

By the same token, I didn't even know if he was still in town. Better safe than sorry, though!

I mean a million dollars would be real great, but it isn't life-changing, for a significant majority it probably would just eliminate debt. Those million-dollar lottery winners are the ones who go bankrupt. Powerball $50 million or $500 million, you can live like Elon Musk for a bit, Million dollar winners try to live that life, use 1/3rd to buy too big a house, buy like 3 cars and in a few years bankrupt.
