I’ve never owned a bad jeep.

 

My wife’s dad was an engineer for Chrysler.

We’ve had several JGCs and Wranglers with no problems.

FWIW she drives a Cayenne S now.

I’m really tempted to use the FCA family plan to buy a Wrangler 392.

 

Buy me one too while you're at it. The fun factor would be off the charts................

Ok I will vent on this one just a bit. I've owned quite a few suv's and a ton of trucks. Again I got my wife the 4Runner because they were reliable and built on a truck platform. Easy for me to work on etc. I do not however understand why Toyota couldn't class these things up a bit. The Rest of their lineup isn't too shabby. She fully admits if the interior was nicer and it had a power liftgate, a little more room and maybe some more power she would have kept it. I also don't understand why the 4Runner community (this is where I'll take a beating) thinks they are the bees knees for going offroad. Now the trd PRO I get with the lockers and such but other than that they are little 4 wheel drive suv. That's about it. Anyways. Just needed to vent that. Toyota needs to step up their game to get the soccer moms in more 4Runners.

 

Rav4? Highlander? Sequoia?

 

They aren't in the same class though. They just need to make the 4Runner have some more creature comforts that's all.

If the GX460 had the 4Runner tailgate I’d be down. You don’t see the ugly grill while you’re driving.

 

I'd probably of gone with an MDX or a Highlander. But some people like cars even with they know it'll cost them. OP seems fully aware of Durango problems, but at the end of the day happy wife happy life. Can't argue with that.

I've been in a 1st gen and 2nd gen Durango, both had a lot of issues. Hopefully OP has better luck.

 

yeah pretty spendy. guess about the same league as the Durango I'm buying. Kinda ugly though.... Guess mama's a mopar girl.

 

oh yeah the first couple gens of durangos were terrible. I also have to keep an eye on that racetrack rear light. Apparently they are prone to water problems although we never had any with ours in the three years we owned it.

 

Ah, model loyalty. Never fails. The love on forums for their chose vehicle. I do love mine and look at it every time I park it. Makes me smile. But I also wonder at times if Toyota's decision process starts with "What would the Amish do?" If convenience, comfort, and commuting are the primary porpoise, there's way better SUV's out there.

 

My wife’s decision process starts with……..does it come in a pretty color? Haha

 

She's not in the 4Runner target demo, I'd say.

 

haha. Needless to say she's getting F8 green in the Durango. I don't understand though on the Durango's how they can make the front all the way to behind the rear doors pretty sweet and then the back end kind of looks like a turd.

When my wife complains about my 4 runner, "It drives like a truck& I have to stomp on the brakes&it's too high"....I just say fine then drive your own car! Its not a chick car . my $.02

 

So why are power wagons nice inside? My .02. There's nothing wrong with having some creature comforts in an off-road capable vehicle. The fact that they don't have a leather option in a non-limited model is crazy. I'm guessing most agree on this forum that the Limited ones are not as off road friendly and don't look nearly as nice. Keep in mind our gripes with the vehicle have nothing to do with outward appearance. That parts great. It's all good. I didn't start this to completely bash the 4-Runner.

 

That's what my wife said when I nixed the GX460. I was like, n.o. w.a.y. Either we go all the way and get a LandCruiser, or the 4R.

 

Yeah me neither. I dunno, the internet is full of people that have only had bad experiences with <fill in the blank with your favorite gear>.

I started out building e-commerce sites, and everyone was always asking for product ratings, and I was like, it's just gonna be n00bs, fanboys and haters, nothing useful. That's pretty much what I still see now, 20 years later.

I cant speak for every 4runner owner, but I’m pretty clear where I stand in relation to a Rubicon or Wrangler when it comes to off roading prowess. They win.

And Im sure jeep folks understand where they stand in relation to 4runners regarding space and interior cargo/ sleeping room while being able to do 90-95% of what they can do off road.

My 4runner is the bees knees for being a comfortable off-road continent-crosser. It also provides me with the opportunity to become youtube/instagram famous if I ever were to get an account on those sites. I’ve always said, fat middle aged guys are under-represented on the youtubes.

I agree. But how much are those power wagons going for nowadays? I payed 39k plus tax for my 2021 4runner Off-Road (non-premium). It has the rear locker. I could really only ask for a front locker if I was being greedy, but A-trac gets me 80 percent of the front lockers usefulness (without its drawbacks). Everything inside is very functional, nice to look at and good quality. Good enough for me.

Power wagons are pretty damn cool, but in a whole ‘nother league. Also, they wouldn’t fit on a lot of forest trails I go on.

Ive chased nice interiors before and have ultimately been let down by other more important aspects of the car. Granted, this was on more “affordable” cars. Mazda and Kia for example have made some gorgeous interiors, but that didnt make up for any deficiencies in reliability or functionality of the whole package.

 

I agree, I think for 4Runner fans like myself, we like the simplistic utilitarian approach that Toyota takes.

Certainly there are other options out there with more creature comfort’s than the T4R, and that’s ok.

As far as Jeeps, they have a proven track record of off road success, probably more than the 4Runner, BUT, I would much rather drive cross country in a T4R than a Jeep.

I really appreciate the fact that my 4Runner will take me where I need to go off road and then drive comfortably down the highway at the end of the day.

No I'm just saying something that can go off-road doesn't need to be lame inside. I'd say a leather upgrade wouldn't increase the price that much. Oh yeah my power wagon is 70 grand. I personally think a few things like auto headlights which is basically standard on most, AWD should be an option on something other than the limited models, and the power liftgate as a standard would sell a hell of a lot more 4runners to the soccer moms. I'm sure my wife would keep hers if she had those things. It's unfortunate that the third row takes up six inches of cargo space, although I'm not sure how else you could do it with a 4runner. Also the stereo sucks and no remote start option for any other trim or just making it a standard option is weird. Those are my wife's complaints I guess and I tend to agree although none of them would detract me from driving it.

Hey hey hey now…… my Runner is my most favorite car I’ve ever owned! I happen to be a chick

 

I'm a chick and a soccer mom . I'm currently driving an 08 MDX that we bought brand new. It has all of the bells and whistles. Those bells and whistles have all broken and I'm left with an unreliable car that I barely trust to get me to work much less out of town travel. It has failed me in more ways than I could ever imagine over the last 5 or so years. Prior to that, no issues at all from it. I am currently awaiting my 2022 LR TRD Sport to come in. Two more weeks... I specifically chose the 4Runner because of it's simplicity, durability, and reliability. I work in healthcare and my commute is 70 miles round trip every day. I put a lot of interstate miles on a car and I need to know I can depend on it every single day. I know I can depend on a Toyota. My husband has a 2000 Tundra with 375K miles on it that runs circles around my MDX. His truck has had zero issues. It was not a hard decision for me to make on what I was going to get. It was just finding it...
