Anybody out there running a tank less on board air system. I want to install one inside the engine bay. Looking at the ARB but wanted to see which one everybody else is using and what you guys think. It has to be good with dust as we are all over the dessert. Please let me know your thoughts.
    Thanks all

Arb all the way. I had the ckma12 in my truck and it was great. Before I had a dual viair setup with a tank. The arb performed much better.

Slee off road also has a nice mount for the 4runner.

What 2 way are you running in your rig? Antenna placement?

It seems like you can't beat the ARB i've been online researching and i just purchased the CKMA12 and the complete hose kit. Should be here with two weeks. I'll post up after install.
As for the radio i just have a motorola hand held CB. I am looking to upgrade because the range is bad. Next thing to research .

I agree ARB all the way. Pricey, but worth every penny. I'll research the 2 way as well. Need a stationary unit and hand held.

I've got the CKMTA12 compressor, throws out a lot of air! Been flawless on my rig for the last 6 months that I've had it. Primary reason for me is to power my dual air lockers, but I've also got a 2.5 gallon tank to aid in speed for airing up and running tools if necessary. The dual compressor with tank packs a punch!

Are you looking VHF or just regular CB? I was looking for a dual band where you can use one or the other. I'm not sure about all this stuff so i spend time reading things and looking for input. Thanks I keep looking and posting findings.

Both bands would be great. Similar to what the tow-trucks use. Thanks and I'll start learning as well.

Ok I got my air system up and running and yes it's excellent. Took a trip out to the desert and it worked great . We aired down to about 20lbs on each vehicle and at the end hooked the hose up flipped the switch and instant air follow. Love it. I need to find a way to store the hose in the engine bay so it's not in the cubby in the way back. I think i will put it on the mounting bracket next to the pump and just strap it down I tried it on the street and it worked great but need to try off roading. The install is easy as long as you get all the parts. The mounting bracket i got from Slee Off Road great .The wiring is straight forward the hardest part is deciding to cut a hole in your dash. And picking the right spot lots of stuff right behind the bash from wires to braces.I would recommend this to all. The easy off not having to pull out your pump from the rest of your gear in the truck and mess with plugging it in then airing up and then putting it all back after it cools down is priceless. Here is some pics. Good luck black Friday is almost here.

You can use it for airing up your tires after off roading even use it for cleaning your air filter ( that's my uses ) or some on board air systems you use it for air tools for repairs .

ARB redesigned the air hose connection to the compressor! The old style metal one would get hot as lava when in use. NICE!

Nice......thanks for sharing with us ! I ordered a kit off your review, should be here by the weekend. I didn't order the mounting plate just yet cause I like to tinker and probably have everything I need to make one.

That's gotta feel awesome having, you know the saying there I'm sure.

I feel your pain on hole cutting, my truck is 27 years old and the dash is clean as could be. I'd hate to be the first to do any mods but I am keeping this baby.

Nice rig by the way ! Looks very functional

I'll follow up on my install just in case anyone with a 1990 wants to see.

    Thanks again!

My first 4runner was a 95 red one that i had modified and loved it but that crappy 3.0 V6 blew up and then i put a rebuilt one in it and again it blew. But off roading was incredible i will look for a photo.

Good looking truck, that's to bad. I traded my 78 K10 4X4 for this Toyota, and it has a V6 with 174,000 miles on it. So far it's been great. Had the mechanic do a complete check and he gave it 100% after changing an axle and a few other minor things.

We did a trial run up to Rhyolite and Beatty to mine explorer and check out the statues/outdoor art park and it ran great, tested the 4X4 very mildly. It brought to mind airing down and the need for onboard air.

I was looking at tacos and the new 4 runner, love the new look and all but just wasn't willing to do another note even with great credit. The wife's runner was paid off a few years ago so hopefully this one will last for awhile.

Where did you get the system from and also the mounting bracket? Was it a easy install? I plan on making this my next upgrade

I ended up ordering my pump and hose kit on Amazon and then the bracket i ordered from Sale OffRoad. The easiest install 4 bolts into existing threaded holes. everything comes with it that's needed.
Make sure when get the pump you have to get the hose kit it has the fittings that are needed.

    Good luck

I wanted to ask ya, how come the switch couldnt be made to fit the spot on the left side where that other button would go? vs cutting. Thanks for the pics! helped me decide on placement for my install!

You can order ones that fit . I tried to put one in the above shown empty location but it did not fit. Since those pictures I have installed two more switches to match the small button type and they all line up. Good luck.

Reviving a dead thread here but quick question for you. What brand push switch are you using here for your air compressor? Is it Air On Board? If so, how is the switch itself holding up? Any wiring issues with it or issues with the small lights that illuminate the switch? Also did you wire it to be able to dim with your dash lights?

It is an AOB switch. No issues with it, the switch is as smooth operating as factory. I did not wire it to dim with other lights. The blue light is not distracting in that location.

I have had bad luck with putting ARB compressors in engine compartments. The older original diecast pumps with the integrated tank had a single viton o-ring that would lose its ability to seal as the die castings would warp after enough heat loads were applied to it from running the vehicle and the compressor in the desert with high temperature ambient conditions. The solenoid valves do not like under hood temps for very long either! I have my air system mounted behind the rear axle on the fuel tank side of my 91 4Runner. This provides a place to put an air filter behind the panel in the fenderwell up near the fuel filler pipe. So this is relatively high up on the 4Runner and most of the dust from the tire doesn't go up into the wheel well. This location also keeps the compressor's motor and pump away from the exhaust side of the 91 4Runners undercarriage.

The system I have is made up of a MAX-AIR compressor which has some very real CFM capacity that exceeds both the Vyair and the ARB compressor piston diameters by approximately 1.5X. With this attached to a two gallon tank with a 140 PSI cut-off switch, air tools for wheel removal are a reality. Airing up all four tires from sub-20 PSI to road pressures of 28 and 38 PSI is like you are at a gas station with less than a 45 second burst per tire to make the jump in pressure needed. To fill the tank from empty to 140 PSI with 2 gallons of volume takes less than 5 minutes. As this was originally a back-up air supply that I had on a 4.6L HSE Range Rover's EAS system it was removed when I sent the damm RR to the scrap yard after an 18 year battle in trying to solve the unreliability of a Land Rover. I have since pitched the two gallon tank for a smaller 1 gallon tank and have a quick disconnect fitting mounted to the rear bumper. This supplies air for some firestone air springs on a utility trailer I made that follows the 4Runner with storage and a roof top tent that is attached to the trailer in situ.

As for switches an illuminated toggle is used when arming the relay that fires up voltage to the compressor but is in series with the pressure switch to regulate the tanks charge to 140 psi. A pressure gauge is mounted in the under dash panel next to the switch. This panel adorns the area below the steering wheel where there is a nice indent in the panel for the gauge and switch to fit. The tank has a regulator attached to bring the tank pressure to about 80 or 90 PSI so that there is a bit of pneumatic capacitance associated with the tanks full charge.

I know you are looking at on board but just a suggestion. I have a ryboi 18 + inflator. I camp but not trails like u guys. U can carry it where u want. I use it on vehicles, tractor, and atv tires. Also can use as pump for mattress etc. U can charge through outlet on vehicle. Check home depot and direct tools. Battery will do multiple pumps. Just a thought.Screenshot_20200522-103823_Chrome.jpg
