Took some pointers from a few ideas online and started a build on a sleeping platform.

Bottom half is going to double as storage that can stay in the back.
Couple of pocket screws to hold it all together.
Will eventually cover the top with some indoor/outdoor rug and throw a topper on it.
No plans to put drawers in, at least not yet.

Pretty much the same thing I did... just a simple 3/4 ply box, which initially didn't have a bottom but eventually I added one.

What's a jig? :dancingbacon: I hate wood work - I'll take wires any day over splinters LOL. Just FYI - you don't need drawers unless you have such talent to make them. I just cut two pieces of ply and hinged them to the box then used 2 gas cylinders to keep them up when needed. The covering is just some cheap speaker material that doesn't seem to hold up very well...

Good chance I'm missing something because I don't see how either of the construction projects (both look well done) would provide a comfortable sleeping platform for a pretty run of the mill 5'10" person, like me for instance.

I’m 5’9” and I thought that too but when I’m sleeping I rarely sleep fully extended.
Ive had an air mattress that’s under 6ft. (I forget the exact length) and i fit fine.

My whole platform on this build is 64” and plan to test soon.

Here are some updates on the upper half. The support for the upper is hinged together so it fold flat and fit like a T underneath and fitted to the cleat on the rear/under of the box. Platform sits on top and a little wider (because that’s how my air mattress is shaped lol)
Drilled some holes that go through the clear and threw some bolts in to keep it from sliding.

Tomorrow I’ll cover the tops with some indoor/outdoors so whatever I use for a topper will have a better surface to sit on.

Looks like good work. One thing that has kept me from doing this or other similar platforms is using wood, the other thing is I suck at woodworking. How much would you estimate that the entire platform weighs?

Thanks for the update. I guess I missed the part about there even being an "upper part" from the original pictures. Well done. I'll follow to see the emerging project before commenting again.

After a forearm work out I finally got the carpet in.

Again, nothing fancy but it’ll do for now

The carpet is perfect - hard to beat the indoor/outdoor carpeting. Your efforts look great! Now break out the vacuum... :bananadance:

I’m looking to build something similar. What are the dimensions of each of the two halves?

    thanks!

I built this for my 3rd Gen, but the same principle could apply to a 5th. The cargo area section has a full length drawer and large, square reliefs in the base to reduce weight. The extension has hinged uprights that slot in between a short, perpendicular piece attached to the front of the box. I removed the rear seat base for additional length; max length would have been 5' 7" with it in place. This extended it to 6 ft in sleep space, but moving the front passenger seat forward or removing it completely would yield 7ft or more. The base removal was a benefit two fold, as my storage tote fits perfectly in the base area when the platform is not extended, fire wood or grocery bags fit in the foot area.

I recently completed a 8 day, 2,400 mile road trip with mostly primitive and remote camping. The platform worked even better than I had hoped.

One of the best one's I've seen yet for simplicity and functionality!

Thanks! Making things more complicated for no reason is rarely beneficial. I watched a lot of videos to get ideas and incorporated some of the best details.
GVM-Corner was my favorite by far https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HF55vEVdDE&t=10s I plan to build a double platform like that in the future.
