Hello everyone, I have been thinking about purchasing a 4Runner recently and have come across what I believe to be a great deal. It is a 3rd generation 2002 limited 4WD and I have asked for additional pictures or the undercarriage and was wondering if anyone has an opinion as to the amount of rust it has. I have read a few posts and articles that have mentioned this being a problem for this generation.

If anyone could take a look at the following pictures and offer me an opinion it would be much appreciated.

    Thank you,

To much rust for me want to handle. If this was like a 79 Toyota pickup or old Rare 81 Trekker(Pre 4runner) Id take it and work on the rust. But I agree with Blue. TOO many out there with out this problem.

I run 96 3rd gen and wheel and mud the shit out of it. I keep a fresh coat of mud to keep my metal rust free. I also live in the driest place in the US. So nothing stays wet for long here.

My 98 had no where near that much rust and it lived at Lake Tahoe it's whole life til I bought it. Even with half as much as that the amount of rust on it bugged the shit out of me, no way I'd touch one with that much rust. Any repairs are likely to be a PITA due to rusted bolts, and I'd worry about frame rot on the inside if it has that much on the outside.

Yeah thats what I thought. I passed on it and am still looking, I came across another one and got some pictures back and its better but still a bit of rust on the frame. Am I going to need to wait and look for one from arizona or something to find a clean one?

Maybe not AZ exclusively, but probably south of 43* North & west of 100* West, below say 6,000' & east of the Sierra & Cascade mountain ranges. That gives you western: TX, OK, KS, NE. All of NM, CO, AZ, UT, NV & parts of OR, CA & ID.

On this map, where ever there isn't any green, that is your target area.
