I honestly thought about the new Defender. But it was literally twice the cost!

A JLU was on my list, especially since it comes with a 6 speed manual, but common sense took over.

We were going to get a Tundra OR, but the 4Runner seemed like it would do the duty we have planned. It's nice to have everything under the same roof!

Ram 1500 to replace my previous one. But decided for more interior space for the dogs instead. Expeditions/Yukons/Navigators were (are) silly expensive, so chose the 4Runner. So far after 35K I’m enjoying the experience, but it certainly isn’t a Hemi!

I won't say I almost got it but I wanted an FJ. Spent about a year or more trying to find one that fit my budget, or more precisely, one that I could justify the cost of. Then I realized there aren't any that fit that category. So I "settled" on the 4runner. I think it's just the unique coolness of the FJ that made me want one. After all, the runner can pretty much do everything the Fj can, or at least up to the level I would require. And with the runner I've got 4 full doors and more cargo room. Plus, at times when we're riding slow in the mountains with our dog in the back seat, the only thing that will shut up her whining is to put her window down. Can't do that in an FJ.

A Toyota Sequoia to fit the family more comfortably. However, I knew it would be too big for the trails.

Bronco. But it became apparent that Ford was going to screw the pooch with the roll out. And I rode with a friend in his new Tacoma and just didn’t like it at all. My first one was a 2001 TRD Prerunner that’s sitting in my driveway with less than 200k on it. The new one just didn’t do it for me. When I drove the 4 runner the first time I knew this was it. Ordered what I wanted and two months later I was driving it home. No looking back now.

Tacoma, Ranger, ,Colorado. Decided I didn't want a pickup so bought another 4Runner.

All three of the above were very nice, by the way.

And, if it ever gets released for our 21 TRD Pro's, a Magnusson SC will get us up into the V6 Turbo power range...

    Same.

When I bought my 4R in early 2019 I was looking used under 25-30k. In that price range, I wasn't going to find the JKUR that I wanted w/out a ton of miles on it.

At this point the 4R was barely on my radar. I had a friend who had one and was pushing it hard when I told her I was looking at Jeeps.

I started comparing the 2 for my intended use. I even posted on WranglerForum, even the majority of those guys recommended the 4R for my use ( also, there was no Toyota or 4R bashing, which is why all the Jeep negativity in yota communities really annoys me).

The JL coming out sealed the deal, as I decided that was what I wanted over a JK. No way was that my budget.

Ended up picking up my 13 TE for less than HALF of what a JLUR would have cost.

Not gonna lie though, whenever I see a nice JLUR I get a twinge of envy.

Defender was high on my list, I think they nailed the design. But after 2 years with a very unreliable 2019 Jeep Wrangler the idea of buying another less-than-reliable Land Rover was not going to happen. I was sold on 4Runner's reliability and frankly it was very affordable. As a self employed person this was win-win for me.

Came from an Access Cab Taco Prerunner, needing more space interior space and 4wd (finally).

The 4R seemed like a no-brainer, but expensive. I also considered a 4 door Taco, 4th gen 4R, Tundra, Ranger, 4 door Wrangler, and even a Frontier or aging XTerra to save some cash.

Everything modern actually cost as much or more than the 4R (even 6 year old Tacos), so I ended going with my first choice.

The Jeep was the closest choice, but the safety ratings (no side airbags), high cost, and less interior space (with a larger vehicle and turning radius, go figure) kind of solidified the choice. They're two different vehicles that satisfy similar needs, and I feel like you'll know which one is better for you.

    Me before buying TRD ORP-
    • Jeep Wrangler Rubicon- Poor second row space for child seat. Poor roof insulation to prevent cold getting inside.

Before buying Limited for my wife-
    • Lexus GX - Small fuel tank, less ground clearance.
    • Highlander Limited with TV-AWD - I have less trust on AWD vs 4wd. (I only clean the walkway in snowy days and in front of the garage there is snow / ice with a relatively steep incline. I'm a tropical island boy, not used to cold weather.)

There were few others but these were the closest contenders.

None. I would have bought a brand new FJ Cruiser instead of the Runner if they were available though.

I was looking at 1st gen Lexus GX and at 4th gen 4Runners. I wanted one or the other because of the V8. Most clean low mile examples in my area were going for only $5K+/- less than a used 5th gen 4Runner at the time. So I started to look at the 5th gens and I'm so glad I did. When I test drove a few used ones I was hooked, but couldn't justify paying close to msrp on a used one. Eventually I pulled the trigger on a new 2019 OR that I have today. It's hands down the best vehicle I've owned.

    We looked at:

JL Rubicon: Replace the JK Rubi with a newer one. Meh. After 7 jeeps, it's time to move on.
Defender: oh god. Having owned a Defender 110 this new thing is...rubbish.
Lexus GX: Nice, like the V8, hated that giant grill that practically drags on the ground, also, the price was too high for what it is, which lead to....
Landcruiser: This was my first choice, but, really couldn't justify $85k over $48k for the 4R. I'd rather save that $40k towards some land, doesn't make sense to tie it up in a vehicle.

So, we have the 4R. Wife loves it, I miss having a manual transmission and a front locker and annoyed that I had to buy better tires, but like the interior space, and, it's a Toyota. So, overall, the right choice for us.

None really, I did have a 2010 FJ cruiser that I thought about trading in, but I kept it and gave it to my daughter when she turned 16.
