Really surprised at the amount of stone damage after just 5 light off-road trips on gravel forest roads, as seen below:

That’s the rear passenger wheel arch trim. Anybody else see this much damage in such a short time? Any way to mitigate this?

Yes there is a way. Get touch up paint from the dealer and then don’t look at it.

with all terrain tires. Rock chips are going to happen.

I am just starting to research Xpel film. Wondering if that may help your concern also

    Work in progress.
I was up in Breckenridge and FairPlay, roads were wet and noticed a lot of dirt on the rear doors from the front tires and I also have Duratracs. I will soon order rock sliders with plates whicH I am sure will help with this problem.

Yeah I think I saw your other thread. That’s my first thought - will need to have the existing damage dealt with first. I hope xpel is tougher than the factory chip guard because it’s already damaged too.

I guess I’m just surprised how quickly the damage occurred. Nothing like this on my previous vehicles - 14 years on an FJ and 1 year on a Tacoma - same driver, same roads, same tires (KO2’s).

Planning on installing the factory rock rails but don’t expect them to help with this much as they fit so close (which is exactly why I like them).

    thanks all -

I have rock sliders with top plates. After 65K miles and tons of off-roading, I have nowhere near that many chips.

    Do you have mudflaps?

I wonder if oversized flaps would help. I assume it's mostly the sliders saving mine since my tires self clearanced (ie completely tore off) my front RokBlokz this spring. But, they have oversized flaps that might catch more than the factory flaps.

Have sliders with plates, and while I have chips and custom pin stripes form trails, it’s generally from narrow trails and thrown rocks from other drivers than my own tires. They were the first thing I put on, since we needed a step for my son, so cannot compare it without them though.

Yeah mine is hammered in that same spot. I’ve wondered if the OEM running boards (step) would help.

The paint on these are so thin. My 4Runner is 2 months old and has 1/2 dozen chips on the hood alone. Pretty crazy.

I am concerned about this also and looking into getting Xpel film put on the front, hood and mirrors. My only oncern is I plan to keep it for 20 years so I don’t want it to yellow out. I need to make some more calls and read reviews maybe in other sites

What color do you have? I had it on my red cobra and it never looked yellow. I have a neighbor with a white Lexus and it was pretty noticeable a couple years in.

I just figure that I will probably do a front end repaint at 200k miles or so. Like you, I will probably keep mine until it is no longer reasonable to do so. Idea is 20+ years if possible

Brian I have silver paint on a 2021 ORP. I only drove it 500 miles so far waxed it and covered for winter so it would be spring project.

Did your neighbors white Lexus film go yellow is that what you meant? The place I spoke to so far said it would last ten years without issue but to be safe consider ripping it off and putting on new stuff in 8 years. Cost is about $1,100 to do front bumpers and grill, full hood and mirrors. It’s only worthwhile though if it works right

yeah, hers went yellow on her Lexus.

I had to pull mine off my cobra because it started to lift on the edges, but I only had it on the front 4 inches of the hood. I would be interested to find out how full coverage would hold up or last.

Thanks for sharing that info. How recently were those installed If I may ask? Sounds like maybe I should consider putting on my weather Tec bug guard and hope for best. I guess we all do best we can.

I know the paint is seems softer for sure. I will give the domestics that the paint job seems better at least on old Explorer. I think I had two hood chips over 20 some years.

no clue on hers. My cobra was 3 years old when I had to pull it.

oh, my Tacoma looked better after 4 years (made in Mexico) We’ll see how this one holds up.
