lol, yeah, I did my first winter with my 2wd Tacoma. It had it’s moments where it was a little tricky, but it was doable. Ha!! I went up the mountain once sliding the whole way.

my point behind saying it’s unnecessary is because a good driver can make up for not having 4wd. I’ve seen some talented people do crazy things without 4wd

Some of these replies have a certain “bot-like” quality to them. As if they fed the algorithm basic debatable points about an issue, and it spits out generic responses loosely associated with the topic. This was one my favorite comments, amazingly devoid of any sense or logic.

“4WD version is miserable to live with. Incredibly overrated. High floor, not a lot of interior space for the size and weight of this thing. But I supposed if ALL of your driving requires off-roading ans there are NO paved roads on your special commute then you NEED it. Have fun.”

Since when does the 4wd version have a higher floor?

Sorry to say this, but they are idiots. Give them more high-tech Bronco sport AND high-tech Defenders :D

The 4WD with two rows of seats has almost 90 cubic feet of space with the second row folded down.

And the body shell is the same for both.

It seems the majority of the comments come from people who want the most amount of interior room, the best infotainment available, as many speeds in the auto tranny that can possibly be engineered in (how often does a 10-speed auto shift, anyway?), every electronic gadget / driving aid known to man, and fuel mileage they can brag about.

None of which were considerations by me when shopping for a 4R. Sure I'd like to get 45 mpg, but then I'd have to drive a Prius.

Not to fan any coals but I'm not seeing the point of a 2WD 4Runner. I bought mine for the capability of going where others can't follow. Otherwise it's a bit like a boxy station wagon.

You bought yours for your reasons. Someone else buys a 2wd for their reasons. I can certainly see the lack of need for 4WD in the south and southwest. Nothing wrong with a boxy station wagon if that’s what you like.

Nothing wrong with a 2 wheel drive 4Runner. In my opinion and after my experience on recent trails, I think a 2 wheel drive 4Runner is more capable than some little AWD Rav4 or CRV. We know those all wheel drive systems are a joke.

It's ok... They can say what they want over at TTAC... I've had 4, 4Runners and 5 total Toyotas. They have all been reliable, and good to me. I remember, my first car was a 1988 Toyota Cressida, handed down to me from my parents, which they bought new. I went off to university, didn't change the oil in that thing for a year and a half, and it STILL ran like new. When I did realise (I wasn't as much of a car nut as I am now) that oil needed to be changed, it was like molasses in the engine.

As we can see, these guys are just a pack of haters. For all we know, they can be in their little Chevy Sparks writing this review, wishing they had a 4Runner. Bye Felicia! As I've grown older, I've learned to not give a damn about people's negative opinions relating to something I choose that is good for me. LOL!

    Cheers,

    Sean

I would LOVE to get my hands on a clean Cressida! Those were such cool cars, and they shared the Supra's engine.

You know what's funny mate? I saw one on the road the other day, but it looked like it had seen better days. That car brings back a lot of memories. I think if I had the opportunity to purchase a well taken care of one, I'd jump at it too!

    Cheers,

Hatred for Toyota is real, and it is sad. I have watched many offroading reviews on Youtube and somehow they try to bring Toyota down. Their biasedness disgusts me frankly spanking.

Watch this if you don't believe me. They are so illogically biased. Such dishonest review. Despite their hatred, Toyota rocks and has been rocking for decades.

Their used to be two more Toyota Sedans, at least in Asia, Toyota Corona and Toyota Kareena. Not sure about the exact spellings.

My son drove a Cressida for several years. That thing was a tank, with the straight six engine. He loved it.

If I recall correctly, those are both smaller than the Cressida. The Cressida would be fun because they came with a straight 6, making them a good candidate for a 1JZ swap. There was also the Crown, but I don't think we ever had them in the US.

Yes they were Corolla cousins. Cressida was more fun. From 2000-2015 Toyota went super conservative except for the FJ Cruiser. They got rid of their fun cars.

Speaking of fun cars, I want to see a 300 hp 300 torque Corolla hatchback with manual transmission. Or just make it and put a Lexus badge on it :)
Something like that but with much more muscle

I am sitting in the Hatchback right now. Come on Toyota, fit a V8 in this and badge it Lexus :) Or since you are playing the Turbo game too now, then Turbocharge the 3.5 V6.

Believe it or not, I almost bought a new manual transmission Corolla before deciding to save up for the 4runner.

I test drove the sedan and hatch versions several times. The car was legit. Good shifting and clutch action, felt good on the road. Also had some neat electronic functions such as auto-blipping on downshifting, and anti stall throttle application if it senses you’re gonna stall. You could also turn them off which was the neatest part, lol. Hated the electric emergency brake though. The only correct e-brake is a lever in the center as far as Im concerned.

Not as light as hatchbacks cars in the old days, but a lot lighter than most cars nowadays.

The Toyota that we all know, will never do it. Their reputation for reliability and durability is way too important for them.
