2018 SR5P to 2015 TRD Pro?

So I’m considering to trade in my current 4runner (2018 SR5P) for a 2015 TRD PRO (inferno). From the looks of it, not much has changed between the two trucks. Why? Mostly for the rear locker. Yeah, I could add one to mine aftermarket, but I also like the color of the pro. Dumb move? Let me know why!

Depends on the financial part of the trade. How much is the 2015, what are you being offered for trade in value. Do you currently owe on the sr5 etc.

Mileage and was it treated with care?

 

They’re asking $42000. Trade in will give me close to $10k equity which I would apply to the new loan (I owe $27k they will give me $37k). I bought my current 4runner last year in may for $36k.

 

It sits at about 70,??? Miles. 2 owners and in real great shape. No visible dings or scratches.

 

I’d pass. Too many miles for ME. But at the end of the day it’s your money. So do what makes you happy.

 

Now is not really a good time to buy any car new or used. However, the rear locker kicks ass off road!
I see an inferno around Branson once in awhile. I rarely see them otherwise. If you like it, go for it.

My favorite Pro color is the 2016 in Quicksand.

 

I would not be concerned with the mileage if the truck was maintained per schedule, which is pretty basic to begin with.

There is one inferno pro in my area, its a great color.

 

It's a lot for the year and mileage. Yes, not so much in this market but in general. This last March I got my 21 TRD OR Premium for $41,200 with a few port add ons. Yes it's not a PRO but it had 0 miles and everything was new. It's a tough time to get a new car but if it were me I would pick up a TRD OR or OR Premium new over a used PRO with 70k. Plus, that suspension will most likely need replacing depending on how it was used.

 

The off-road premium has a locker as well.

A PRO is just an ORP with a suspension upgrade, and different wheels and tires. Newer ones have dual climate control as well.

If you just want the color, go for the PRO. But, if it's about the locker and suspension, you can get an ORP and upgrade the suspension for less $$.

 

If locker is your only issue, you can get a 3rd party one, like ARB/Eaton. On the other side, it may worth due to the extra cash. Although the older PROs did not come with fox shocks, it is in fact a Toyota, and should last a while. I would definitely have a mechanic put a fancy scan tool on it and check it out before buying it, just to be sure you're getting a solid, not abused vehicle... Also, check the carfax, sometimes accidents are recorded with them.

 

As has been mentioned, you can get a brand new ORP for the same price as the 2015. I do love Inferno, but I'd pass and get a 2021/22 ORP. Even a new Pro with all the updated tech would only be 10K more.

 

When I checked last year to add a front locker to my TRD ORP the shop quoted $1500 or e-locker and I think it was $2500 for air locker with air compressor. I bet it would be similar to add a rear locker to your SR5 (maybe).

I would vote to keep the known vehicle and put money on that vs taking a risk buying an older unknown 2015 TRD Pro. As far as I can remember those older 2015 TRD Pro are almost like a base model 4Runner with Bilstein suspension.

 

A 2015 pro with 70K miles for 42K? It would be a hard pass for me. I would wait until the market calms down and prices drop some.

I disagree. If you are trading and getting the great trade value that this market is producing, then you are not losing out. If you are flat out buying, then now is NOT the time.
That being said, you always lose when trading or buying a vehicle, fees add up and you don't get them back.

 

Remember that the 2015 did not have a fancy suspension, just mildly upgraded Bilstein shocks.

 

Trading is almost always a ripoff. I sold my Camaro SS above market and 5k more than any dealer offered.

 

Thank you for your input, guys. After some feedback and consideration, I'll pass on it. I'll wait for the right time and upgrade to a newer model in the future!

 

Pay attention with what shops you have working on your vehicle, I had a very bad experience with 4 Wheel Parts, they brag as being awesome in working with 4 wheelers but they don't pay the mechanics properly and they get unskilled/not interested people. They almost ruined my Jeep's 8 1/4 diff, to the point the compressor would not stop working, so I opened the diff myself only to find a handfull of shavings. Shavings probably got into the seals of the ARB locker and they would not hold the pressure. I had to clean that thing really well and do 2 diff oil changes within 100 miles to remove the shavings from the inside of the diff so that the compressor would not run continuously. They did not pretension the diff properly, resulting in an improper lash. I was the last time somebody that I do not know works on my vehicles, I thought I would save money not buying all the tools which I ended up buying anyways to fix their goofup, lol... And tools weren't even that expensive as the labor was. FYI, an ARB locker should cost around US$1,000 and it is common to pay another thousand for labor. Compressor is extra, but you get the advantage to choose what you want and with the ARB Dual, airing back the tires is a breeze. And yes, price is roughly the same for both front and rear.

Ha, I saw your sig and I was wondering where did I hear about LionRuner before... so I just subbed to your channel and will probably change the interior dome lights, those and the DRLs are the only non led I have. Got tricked when ordered the 4runner, I chose interior and exterior LED upgrade w/o knowing the dome lights are different. Toyota is weird sometimes...

Regarding https://truautomotive.com/ - the seem to have a small shop, and based on license plates, they are located in Colorado, correct? Not too close from East Coast.

 

The interior light mods I did for the TRD ORP & Limited didn't work for my 2021 TRD Pro. The map lights and door lights fit but the dome light does not fit. Older 4R got 31mm and the newer 2021 Pro seem to have a smaller dome light. 2 times I ordered 29mm bulbs from Amazon to try but the seller kept sending me 31mm which are too big. I kind of gave up for the 2021. Will definitely share if I find a solution.

Yes, this seems to be just one shop here in Denver. I couldn't decide yet. I'm worried about something brakes on a IFS vehicle with front locker. I was tempted for the cheaper e-locker and next second my brain says why to get the air locker so you get the air compressor as well. Haven't decide yet.

Regarding braking the front diff with a locker: everything breaks if abused, right? Lol. To my knowledge you need to really abuse it to break it, and I would probably use a front locker on an IFS very, very carefully on rock crawling, or just not use it and use the winch instead (better winch it than wrench it, lol). Other than that, like mud/snow/ice/gravel, you won't break it. I have to put the 4runner I have to some tests and see if it is even worth getting a front locker, considering how good ATrack, terrain selection and crawl control are. From my research, air lockers are a bit better because they engage a bit faster ("instant lock"), and are the choice for rock crawlers, but you can't go wrong with an Eaton e-locker. If you don't care about rock crawling, then get whatever you feel is right, you can get a compressor on the side anyways and it shouldn't cost you more going with e-locker + compressor vs ARB locker + compressor. Another aspect to consider with air lockers is who installs it, if they mess up the air line or they route it wrong so it gets ripped, it will constantly leak and be an annoyance. What I currently have on my jeep is a one cylinder ARB compressor for the ARB rear locker (contemplate if I should put an arb in front too - and I have even a weaker front diff than the 4runner - it is a Jeep KJ (Liberty) diesel with an aluminum front diff housing because they couldn't fit the cast iron that the gasoline has due to the diesel engine - the only reason I kept it is being a diesel which is a rarity) and I got a separate ARB twin cylinder compressor with the 1 gallon air tank (CKMTP12), and I used that in between the vehicles for airing back up. Not sure if you know, but that comes as a kit in a box with handle, very convenient, just FYI I pasted a link with it from Amazon in case you may be interested. I like it because it puts a lot of air (beats my home 120V air compressor pretty bad in performance) and I can move it in whatever vehicle I need it.

Abd one more thing regarding lockers, the only reason I went ARB, other than being company with a very high level of quality, was that a lot of stuff on my jeep was already ARB: OME suspension, Safari Snorkel, ARB bumper, so I said to keep the "uniformity". I would not have any issues getting an Eaton e-locker, since my jeep is anything but a rock crawler...
