What major thing will die first and when?

So I bought this brand new 2021 4Runner with the intention to keep it for 20 years and 500,000 miles. So what major thing on this boy will die first, and when, and can it be avoided? Apart from KDSS, that I am sure will die after a 150,000 miles.

Note: I am babying my boy. He is getting 1000 mile break in oil change and undercarriage anti rust coating next week.
The only thing he will never get is a garage, will be parked in the street for years.

 

Also note that I am a very conservative driver.

 

I’m interested to see what others think. I get the impression that the last thing to go is the motor. I suspect most people give up their trucks not cause of one major failure but a collection of annoying things / series of smaller issues.

I can’t remember reading of people who say their trans crapped out. Or engine seized or lost compression. I don’t even see people saying that rust made their rig undriveable.

 

You will crash and total it first.

 

that statement sucks but is honestly pretty truthful. Drivers here have gotten so bad and I’ve had 2 non at fault accidents in my 2019. Fuck me, right?

mechanically, from what I’ve seen, nothing outside of normal stuff will need replacing. Door lock actuators probably go out more than anything on these.

I have to agree with @Singleminded here. After 257K hard miles, my previous 4Runner just needed a bunch of maintenance.

I would expect the transmission to go before the engine, but Toyota automatics have been pretty bulletproof from what I've seen.

 

If it gets totaled, I guarantee you it will not be my fault. I have a CDL A, careless driving and avoidable accidents are things that I was trained to avoid.

 

Also, I bet that KDSS will last much longer than 150K as long as you keep the accumulator clean.

 

Who can clean that for me? The dealership?

 

You can. It's easy. Just remove the (2) 12mm bolts periodically and slide the little skid plate off and hose it down.

 

Does kdss also need to be serviced? Fluid draining etc?

 

You take care of it this will last forever…your shocks will be first thing to go on 4Runner.

 

Not that I am aware of. I suppose the fluid could eventually get nasty. But, I've never heard of it being changed.

Not dead yet but, the wounded windshield 30,000 miles ago is just going to tough it out for quite a while.

 

My experience is everybody who claims that they will keep it for the rest of their lives and drive it until the wheels fall off usually winds up trading it in six months because Carmax offered them 4 thousand dollars over MSRP or they absolutely positively need a pick up truck all of a sudden because they need to tow a 400 pound yard trailer and an 300 pound lawnmower and the 4Runner just won’t do.

 

In my case it'll likely be the nut behind the wheel.

 

I want to be the one who has a 4Runner with a million miles.

 

But if anyone cares about a serious answer.

My driver side door lock actuator has failed twice now, the first time just after the warranty expired and the passenger failed about a year and a half ago. It is an expensive fix to do at the dealer and very time consuming to do yourself.

I broke one CV axle and replaced the other at 90,000 miles because the boot was showing signs of wear and since the suspension was disassembled at the time it was an easy job.

The blower motor has gone out twice now, once at 60,000 miles and just a few weeks ago, not completely out, it just blows much weaker than before. This is a very easy fix.

Nothing else has failed since then, but I assume the KDSS is a time bomb.

 

my 2012 is my forever truck lol, im at 124k miles so im following as im in this spot here as well. Im thinking im gonna change the plugs/coils. Anyone have advice on that? seems that its time. i bought used, its ran perfect since but ive hammered it 20k miles out west in the rockies and back to ohio 3 times since i got it so im assuming she could use some TLC.

 

You are in Ohio. I would suggest coat the frame againat rust ASAP.

 

That was first thing i did, i got her in 19 and she came from canada. ac had dripped onto frame under glove box from what appears to be since she was born lol.

 

Toyota recommends changing the spark plugs at 120,000 miles. I also think that is the last recommended service. So you just have to follow the service intervals described in the manual for anything beyond that.

You can’t do anything to baby it because it is always on.

At some point it will either develop a leak or one of the electrical relays well crap out.

My 2008 Land Cruiser has a mechanical relay that seems to be doing OK simply by rust proofing it.

 

These types of threads are just plain fn dumb.

If you plan to keep it for 20 yeas and 500k expect everything to have broken by then at least one time. That way when it does happen you expected it.

 

No, a Chevy will fall apart by less than 10 years. Friends Chevy transmission died at 45000 miles

 

The fifth generation has been around for over 10 years and there is pretty good evidence that the 2010 models are still going strong without any severe problems, so you should at least be able to get 10 years/250-300,000 miles out of one.

KDSS is a mixed bag, because it has existed in different versions in different Toyota products, so issues with the reliability may not be relevant from one model type to another.

 

My dad's the 1998 4Runner has over 350,000 miles, and it is running like a champ, in a really really harsh part of the world. Everything is working on it, engine is original, transmission is original, and the four-wheel drive system is working like a clock
