While I split the middle with a 5000 mile OCI, I would not be too concerned with doing a 10,000 mile on full synthetic.
Just had my first on Tuesday having hit right a 5000 miles since mid July.
Does ToyotaCare only cover oil changes at 10,000? My dealer did not charge me.

 

My first T4R, an XP 2016 was bought in 2019 with 30,000 miles on it from the dealer who sold it to a single owner. The dealer did the service with supporting records showing oil change every 5K. That made the dealer price easier to swallow. Gil

 

I do 5k with normal driving and 3-4k when I towed a lot that month or hit the trails. Oil is cheap.

 

Changing oil more often does not hurt the engine at all, the point that is being made is that many people are changing oil often due to personal beliefs, which are not always based on science. On the other side, going 5000 or 8000 miles between oil changes won't save a huge amount of money either. But I would rather spend 30-ish for an Oil analysis to know how the oil and engine wears on my particular drive style, and then schedule oil changes according to the report. Oil analysis is also a good indicator in how the engine wears and can provide indicators of wear for specific components in the engine.

Same here. It would be rare where I exceed 5k miles per year, so it's a calendar thing for me, not mileage.

 

I buy that; if you drive without engine oil it's inevitable it will....

This is indeed highly debatable, nevertheless, I have a Toyota Sequoia 20 years old, after I drove it for about 130K miles gave it to my my daughter, then it went to my grandson. The Sequoia has now 527.000 miles on the teller still going strong, I make sure all maintenance is done before the manual limits are reached, "oil every 3/5K miles."

I have other vehicles around that went to my other kids with a lot of mileage on it without problems following the same pattern.

So, I believe if it isn't broken, don't change it. For me, this is proof; again for me.

I've been doing Blackstone tests for my past few vehicles and the data is invaluable. the blackstone test was able to tell me that my old Fozzy xt had eaten at least two of its rings, it was able to tell me that my old yota pickup that I picked up a few years ago with 219k miles was very healthy. Its let me know that the oil in my golf r can go beyond 5k miles, and we've pushed it as far as 6500 once (long road trip) and it still showed enough life that I could have gone farther, but I still just do every 5k and sent a test every time. I'll be doing the same with the 4Runner but probably do every other change unless I notice something changing in the reports.

 

I do, and they will tell me how much farther I could have gone on the oil provided to them. And yes, I could push it to that mileage every time, but sometimes, as you stated, driving patterns change and maybe I can't go 7500 miles on the oil like I did on the last change because it was all highway vs the current hard driving/towing/city driving that should have been changed at 6k instead. hence, I change every 5, get my oil analysed and make adjustments as needed based on the data provided to me.

 

(((200K/10K)*$50))/200K = half a cent/mile vs 1cent if I do it every 5K miles. Tough choice.

 

I change my oil every 100 miles, it's cheap insurance

It's even less if you get non dealer oil, about 25 US bucks for 5 Qt Mobil 1 extended performance, so for 2 oil changes is about 50 for oil + 10 for 2 filters which is 30 per oil change.

People worry about “wear metals” in their engine oil and get all techno about it. See BITOG. Has any 4Runner owner ever reported a problem that a Blackstone oil analysis uncovered? I’ve never heard of one yet. So if you’re spending an extra $30 at every oil change for a chemical analysis you can track over time you are doubling the cost of that oil change (if you buy the oil at Walmart for example). You might as well half your OCI for the same amount of money.

If you’re trying to squeeze out the maximum life out of your oil at least do it the way the process is intended. Drain the amount needed for testing, send it in to Blackstone, wait for the results, and then decide when your oil needs to be changed based on their analysis and recommendations.

Otherwise, consider your driving as severe usage, change the oil at 5,000 miles and just drive it.

What do people use for oil pads or those pads that absorb oil that spills when changing it?

 

I have a large double wall cardboard box that a piece of furniture came in. With it collapsed flat, I lay on it while I'm working under the 4Runner. Absorbs drips that miss my oil collection pan and provides a bit of cushion while I am laying on the driveway.

 

I just changed my oil and had a hard time keeping it drip free while pouring from one of those 5 quart jugs into my small funnel. So I went on a mission to find a Big Ass Funnel at Wallyworld.
Here’s what I bought. It’s about as big as a urinal.

Not sure why you don’t encourage people to do 5 mile oil changes if you have a lot a stock? I have a decent amount it goes back in my pocket so no loss every 5k for me. It’s like I get a discount plus truck is taken care of.

I just use those puppy pads you can get anywhere. They work pretty good unless the oil is piping hot.

 

Just did some luben. 10k oil change on a 7 year old Corolla. It was dark, so was the filter. No knocks, smooth and quite. 170,000 miles.

 

I can vouch for the effectiveness of the carboard box. comes in handy when you own a german car that likes to drip a single drop of oil after every hard drive.

 

I use this tool .. works over many years .....but the 4runner is a bit too high so I put a 6 inch lift on the oil pan container.. then I put the old oil in the laundry plastic containers and bring it to the auto part store..
works good .. probably use some newspaper around the oil drain area..

 

Did first oil change yesterday on my 2020 4Runner Limited 2wd with 4900 miles.
Had to evacuate from New Orleans to Houston as a result of Hurricane Ida so the round trip was about 1,000 miles. I planned to do the first change at 5,000.
Used OEM filter and Toyota 0W20 synthetic. Got the Toyota oil off eBay. Read the oil had significant lubricant properties and decided to use it for initial change. Next change will probably use Mobile 1.
Over the years changed my own oil on a variety of vehicles but this one was a bit more challenging.
Put it up on jack stands to get a good view underneath. Removing and reinstalling the 2 skid plates was a bit of a hassle.
Changed the plastic filter housing to the aluminum one and installed a Stahlbus oil drain plug valve. Will be interested to see its functionality next oil change.
Also had bought the Motivx “bundle” which made dealing with the filter less messy. The filter canister socket tool and the two piece funnel worked well. Everything went pretty smoothly overall but took some time to make sure all was correct.
I’ll be going with the 5,000 change interval knowing I have some leeway if I can’t get to change it exactly each 5,000 miles.
Living down here I generally change the oil in my cars beginning with the fall and then the spring ahead of the summer heat.
I got my 4Runner October 2020. Bought it in Nashville. No local dealerships had what I wanted or pricing. Even many out of town dealers couldn’t produce at a reasonable price. Flew Southwest to Nashville and drove it back home. There’s nothing special about this unit.
It’s clear that many dealerships will not do a fair deal on this vehicle.
Due to COVID-19 driving mileage was down but now my driving miles are still much lower working a less hectic schedule.
Interestingly unless the oil plug crush washer fell down into the drain pan I can’t find it so I suspect that no crush washer was installed on the vehicle when built.

Many many (20+) years ago I bought a case of 100 New Pig's oil absorbent Pig Pads and use them in my

$32 FloTool 11430 25" x 36" Large Drip Tray

large drip tray. With how many I have left they could last me another decade or more.

 

I always try avoiding judging anything in just black and white. Oil analysis is great because it is gives an idea on how the engine is wearing out, possible issues, oil life left, etc. It can provide an indicator of hard driving (higher metals), improper filtration, etc, and can provide an advanced warning to some issues. For ex, although not typical in a Toyota these days, let's say you're at almost 5 years ownership and almost 60K (when powertrain warranty expires). Oil analysis repeatedly showed abnormal potassium levels in oil (indicator of coolant). You go to the dealer and they tell you "it's normal". At 65K it gets so bad that you test a head gasket leak. The oil analysis will be enough proof to show that the issue started while the powertrain had warranty. Oil analysis is not a 100% future predictor by any means, but for the super-ocd, maintenance-freak, it provides a lot of good info.

Changing oil often does not hurt at all, other than the owner's pocket - in some cases- in which case is none of anybody's business but owner's. It is also a good way to have peace of mind considering how cheap oil is.

Personally, I never do oil analysis just to know how long I can go with oil changes. I want to see the engine wear indicators also. But if I can do oil changes every 7K (or 10K or whatever), based on oil analyses, that does not mean everybody should do it. Each one of us has different driving habits, different values, etc, hence everybody should do as they consider is good for their vehicle - wither that is 5K oil change or 7K or 10K or whatever .

Truck drivers do that, since they have 10+ gallons of oil, which is way more than 1.6-ish gallons that we have in the 4runners, where you can dump all oil, have oil analysis, then next oil change go longer w/o a big hole in your pocket. Big rigs oil changes is when oil analysis is definitely worth paying for.
