Hello. Would love a source online to purchase the oil and filter (and gasket if needed, and anything else needed). I prefer not to deal with the local dealerships anymore. Just not a very good experience overall. I can't seem to find the oil available for shipping anywhere. Thanks for any help.

Sorry not the answer your looking for but I buy my oil and filters from the dealership.

FYI, you don't have to deal with the service department at all. It's just like walking into an auto parts store, kinda.

The majority of people have good success with online sales, but I worry about getting counterfeit parts, specifically filters.

Walmart for oil - Mobil 1 Extend Performance 0w20 full synthetic for about $25 a 5 qt jug, (sometimes they have it available for free shipping) which is a good price. Filters from Amazon, very good deals, like this one:

    https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B007OW6LGO?ie=UTF8

If you plan on doing your oil change, consider getting a wrench at minimum, it will simplify your work considerably, something like this:

    https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07JG83SQR?ie=UTF8

Regarding Toyota oil, I heard (but not confirmed) that it is synthetic blend, not fully synthetic oil, so going with fully synthetic oil for about the same price is a no brainer IMO. [EDIT: I confirmed that the approved Toyota oil for 4runners is full synthetic]

EDIT: The oil filters are genuine Toyota, they come from a Toyota dealer that sells on Amazon. FWIW, cabin and engine air filters below:

I run Amsoil but you can get the oil of correct viscosity from any auto parts store. I purchased a case of OEM branded filters from a dealer's ebay account.

Warren makes the Amazon Basics oil also. Kirkland brand is very good, try their Burbon, Brandy and Vodka when you get a chance, almost 1/2 price of brand names.

I understand using the Toyota oil filter but why the Toyota oil? Am I missing something? I am just curious.

Walmart sells Genuine OEM Toyota filters. Cheaper than the aftermarket stuff. No reason to look elsewhere.

Oil, I just run whatever I can find. Shell Rotella and OEM oil are quieter than Mobil 1 and Pennzoil, but they are all pretty good.

Supertech is fine too, and I'm pretty sure there's not much difference between Kirkland and SuperTech, both fine.

I buy filters online, always toyota oem. I tend to buy Mobil 1 oil, but a trusted family member (who worked for mobil for 28 years) sez the best brand of oil is whatever you change at regular intervals so I get the impression brand isn't that important in the real world.

It’s warren and 2 other big manufacturers in the world. The only difference is what additives they choose. The base oil is the same, the rest is marketing. Just make sure you get the correct grade and to be certified to the required standards.
    Same applies to gas.
Wait till you hear about the LCD panels…

Thanks everyone for your responses! I appreciate each and every one of them. This time last year I could find dealers selling the oem oil online but no more. I guess its a pandemic thing too? Not sure.

Incredible post. Thank you very much! Wrench, filters.. all going with your links. Do I need to buy a gasket? I plan to try and stick with the oem oil for a bit longer.

From reading on the forum, apparently the oem Toyota oil leads to less engine chatter. Plus, during warranty phase I am not giving the poor quality dealerships the opportunity to put any issues on me. I am already weary about doing my own oil changes because of it.

Walmart! Got it. Thanks. Didn't even know they had OEM Toyota stuff. Thank you!

haha! I am the same. I don't generally keep cars that long but I am trying to make this one stick. I really like it and would like to keep at least one gasoline SUV long term, and so far I haven't found anything else to replace it and don't think I will. Unless the gen 6 4R is made in Japan, makes big power, and is still all gasoline.. I won't be moving on to a different Runner. Appreciate the "don't get to uptight". Oil stresses me out since the dealer is so unreliable.

You're very welcome! Keep in mind that Toyota oil is actually ExxonMobil 0w20 oill. So you getting 0w20 Mobil 1 Extended performance from Walmart/Amazon/etc would be at least the quality of Toyota oil is not exceeding it for about the same price if not less. So far it is 24 and change US$ for 5qt. And no, you do not need any additional gaskets, in the OEM oil filter box, there are 2 gaskets supplied with the filter, and an oil filter draining tool, with instructions on how to use them.

Also, to the OP I get my filter and gasket from the local dealer. I get my oil from Costco. Got 3 oil changes worth of oil (Mobil 1) for around 40 dollars last time I was there a few months ago.

That is an insane deal. Had to be some sort of catch. Mobil1 isn't cheap!

Is it really? I thought that it was different, and people were saying that the Mobil1 was causing a slightly louder tick in the engine.

Wow. I feel like I have been getting short changed by my dealer if all that is included. I don't remember any of that being included in the past, the 1 time I did buy local. I will be sure to stay on top of it and I get my stuff. Thank you.

Yikes. Be careful. Tons of horror stories. I didn't think it would happen to me, and it did. They don't care about your car.

Check this out, and zoom the back of the bottle picture and you'll see ExxonMobil. This is for part # 00279-0W201-01 which is 4Runner oil. It is possible to have slightly different additives versus a regular 0w20 Mobil 1 but in theory, any 0w20 oil with the proper API certification - do not remember which one it is but you can find it in the manual - would be fine for this engine, per Owner's Manual. The only difference is oil change interval, which for synthetic blends is lower (3,000 miles is mainstream) - although I would only use fully synthetic oils.

Ahh gotcha. I think I remember someone saying Mobil makes the Toyota oil as of semi-recent times. I read most of the manual but I think I need to do a deeper dive and see exactly what they say about acceptable oils. If offset language says just a certain weight is all that matters maybe I can make the jump now!

Yeah, I wouldn't ever run a blend. Full please!

Thanks again for the link and help!

Mobil makes this oil to Toyota's specs. It is different. I inadvertently spent a lot of time on Bob is the Oil Guy reading about Toyota's 0w/20. It is a very good oil.

I use Toyota OEM 0w/20 oil in all my 4Runners and have posted many times on Bob is the Oil Guy about this oil both in both the SN+ and SP versions.
It is manufactured by ExxonMobil to Toyota's specifications.
The Toyota oil is stout and has some of the highest levels of anti-wear (Moly & Zinc) additives for an API oil.
I purchase my Toyota oil from this Amazon seller: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CRMX2NK?_encoding=UTF8
It's a little bit more than the dealers might charge - but it's convenient.
Here is the VOA Blackstone report I had done last spring:

100% agree - how they come up with 6.6 quarts instead of 7 quarts is beyond me! It's not like it even makes sense in liters as 6.6 quarts = 6.24593 liters. LOL:frustrated:

Mobile 1 from Walmart or local auto parts stores.

OEM filter and gasket from local dealership.

Hundreds of thousands of miles between 4 Toyota vehicles and never had a single problem.
