Your observation is more than just a hunch. Nissan intentionally used subpar parts in the early 2000s to keep costs down. When it came to CVT, they went to so far as to use parts that would break right after warranty. They weren't built to last, they were built to last 36,0001 miles. They were indicted and there was class actions against them.

Here are some non-authoritative but interesting reads:
    https://www.nissanclub.com/threads/what-the-hell-happened-to-nissan-this-is-what-happened.513338/
    https://www.reddit.com/r/Nissan/comments/asr7wk/did_renault_really_ruin_nissans_reliability/

    Then there's this:
    https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/ghosn-nissan-renault-escape-japan-lebanon-1.5413513

Simple, for the reason you just mentioned. Seems like fun. A good majority of people don't exactly know what they want to do, so they imitate those who appear to be having fun. You just mentioned why you'd consider it, but they actually acted on that and are hoping it pays off. They likely saw someone, said the same thing, and had some credit to blow.

Will it make them happy? Maybe for a short while, but the diminishing returns of that happiness are much shorter than the 78 months of $60k Jeep will last. Does that make it wrong? Nope, to each their own. But I'll save my money for the things I know will bring either value or happiness to my family in a continual return type of way.

However, that doesn't' mean they don't rock that leg peg every day and enjoy it, so that might be their happy place. People are wierd.

Pics or it didn't happen. :D

Agreed about removable tops. Just having the windows open fills the 4runner with dust. A guy with a Jeep came on a trail run with us this summer. I should have warned him when O saw him taking the top off in the morning. He was not happy at the end of the day.

Speaking of naughty bits, I heard jeep will be offering two stirrups for the rear middle passenger. They have to be shoulder height to clear the front seats.

Ok, that’s not a true thing. Sorry

My parents retired and moved down to Yuma, AZ about 8 years ago. Both are still in good shape and very active, so they decided they wanted to go off-roading in the desert and explore the hundreds of abandoned mines and other cool things out in the middle of nowhere.

There were two camps among the retired community down there; the UTV crowd, and the Jeep crowd.

Dad is a retired Chief of Police, FBI Academy grad, with a Masters in Public Administration. He's a pretty smart and analytical dude...

He decided on a 2dr Jeep Wrangler with a hard top, AT, and AC.

    IMG_20200110_163331871_HDR.jpg

He said when they went out in the desert in their old Jeep Grand Cherokee, they would come upon a group of old folks in UTVs and they would be absolutely miserable. Covered in dust, sweat, and looking horrible. He said a lot of folks have to have on-board air filtration systems because the dust can get so bad on group rides.

I went down there in February in my 4Runner and went everywhere the Jeeps went. I had a 2.5" lift and 285s. A couple of folks in the Jeep club my parents are in planned on upgrading to the 4Runner after seeing mine in action...

The Bronco would be a cool toy truck to play with if I had an extra 50 or 60 grand to blow......as a daily driver/family vehicle....I would say NOT

She has a quirky style that I like. She turns her own wrenches, it's hard not to like that.

She likes the 4Runner and Taco quite a lot as I remember.

Yeah, she’s great. Her review of the manual Taco TRD Pro has me wondering whether I should trade my 4R in for one.

Great Thread. And thanks for the fun to watch videos.
Personally, I think the new Bronco is a good looking, and obviously capable vehicle. But having owned a 2010 FJ Cruiser for 11 years and 161,000 trouble-free miles, and being 71 years old, the 2021 4R/ORP/MR was a no-brainer. I wanted that same, old school reliability that was the FJ.
And when you look at the pricing of top of the line Wranglers and Broncos, it makes my 4R seem like a bargain. No regrets. But I can see where the Bronco could be tempting for many.

That’s a legitimate use for a plastic engine cover. Either way, all you see is plastic.

Another reminder of why I did not buy another Ford coming a Ford employee family. Despite contacting their new popular ceo and getting a dog and pony show from the customer relations department, six weeks in the shop three separate occasions I am done. This was on an Explorer not a Bronco.

It’s pretty sad living in metro Detroit coming from a former loyal Ford family. I think Ford corporate just assumes those employees and their families will continue to purchase the vehicles.

Best of luck to them and future owners I’m out.

Holy Crap. One look at that engine bay and I would have passed on the entire vehicle. Hoses and wires running every which direction. You would have thought Ford engineers - especially for the new Bronco - would have designed a more thoughtful layout. Looks (almost) as scary as a Jaguar V-12. Imagine just a simple drive belt or alternator change down the road. No thanks.

That's another thing I like about the current generation 4Runner. Like my FJ, once you remove the top plastic, you have a reasonable amount of room to work.

With all those complete engines on Broncos having to be replaced under warranty, I would hate being the Techs having to do that job. What a nightmare.

Nissan Patrols are LEGEND…… Like most JDM or SE Asia products, they get all the good stuff and we get sloppy seconds.

While I love the idea of the Bronco, I have little faith long term in them.

It kinda makes me want Toyota to do something way outside the box and at least have a removable top in the back. Between the next GX and Sequoia, it would be cool to see Toyota position the 4Runner head on at Broncos and Jeeps.
I know the chances are between snowball and hell.
