    2022 4runner TRD sport
    Hi everyone,

I'm new around here and new to the 4runner world overall.

I will be picking up a 2022 TRD Sport in a few weeks and I plan on modding it heavily right away. I would much prefer to buy a TRD off-road or a TRD Pro, but alas the current market will not allow that so I must mod it into my own.

First few things I plan to do are replacing the 20'' wheels with 17" aftermarket RRW's, replacing the front bumper with an OEM TRD pro bumper, and give it a little lift if needed.

I do have a question though, which is mainly why I am posting here. I want to remove the ugly side trim and replace it with the shockworks TE rocker trim because I also plan to add rock sliders, but I am not 100% sure if I will be able to do this.

I've done as much research as I know how to at this point (I'm also very new to anything truck related, especially modding) and I am hoping someone here is a bit more knowledgeable on the subject and can either help me or let me know I'm good to go.

Thanks guys, I appreciate any input.

Why are you getting the sport? You’re going to replace the rocker trim, bumper, wheels and suspension. Just get a sr5 premium. It already has those parts the way you want them.

In a perfect world, I would. But there are literally no other options for me where I am located. I have to make it my own :)

so you’re going to spend 6-10K on parts/paint to make it basically a pro? Why not order a pro and be patient?

More like 4-5k. And because Toyota isn't taking any new orders at the moment due to cutting production by 60%. I also need a new vehicle for various reasons. Why do so many people care about what other people spend their money on? My goodness.

I don’t care what you spend your money on, I was genuinely curious on your decision.

I don’t know the answer to your questions but good luck!

I just gave em a call based on your suggestion and they are fresh out of em, but they put me on a list in case someone cancels. They also said they should be receiving allocation from Toyota soon, so we'll see if I hear something before it's time for me to pick up the sport.

I am not sure, but it's possible the rockers are like the limited. Some companies sell a limited rocker conversion so you can put any sliders on you want. I'd look into that and see if they are what you are looking for.

As for front bumper, I imagine the same is true...BUT mind that TSS to ensure you won't mess it up. That's the front radar.

As for lift, does the Sport have xREAS or KDSS or just regular shocks and no KDSS?

2022 is the first year for this so you're pioneering a bit, which is why you can't seem to find any info on what you're doing. We can probably get you through it tho.

I got put on a list for a pro Tacoma and got a call a few weeks later. So there is hope.

Hey thanks for the great info!

I will see if I can find a rocker conversion. I'm pretty sure that the TE rocker trim from shrockworks will work on the Sport, but obviously not 100% sure because of how new it is to the lineup. I've emailed shrockworks but they haven't gotten back to me yet.

Yeah, I will be super careful installing the OEM pro bumper, don't wanna mess up those sensors at all.

The sport has the xREAS suspension, so I'm not sure how that will affect the lift.

Yep, pioneering a bit for sure, but I've always enjoyed a good challenge. I'm excited go through the process and see the result, that's for sure.

Ok good info OP. I bet that trim piece from Shrockworks will work. The 2022 is a holdover all the way back from 2010, so the parts won't have changed.

The Limited looking front, sides, and XREAS make me think the Sport is a Limited suspension and looks with SR5 powertrain (2wd, 4wd vs AWD). I'm willing to bet the rules for the Limited will work on your suspension. Find someone who's lifted their limited, with the XREAS, and that will be your answer.

You’ll have to delete the xreas suspension when you lift just a heads up.

Well thats going to be fun, lol.. I'm looking at the Bilsteins shocks to replace the xreas. Does anyone think that is a good choice?

I too highly suggest you check again on the trim choice if you plan to change tires and other mods you listed.

I'm with ya there, man. I truly am.. I've been looking ever since I reserved the Sport and there's absolutely nothing out there. I need to either go with the Sport or find something quick because my pre-approved auto loan won't last forever, and being approved again later is another hit on my credit.

sounds like a fun project. Remove xreas, swap bumpers and rockers to trd. I would recommend the oem non-limited rockers as they look and fit better then shrockworks.

Did all that to my Limited

Yes, then when you get the Pro, you can spend thousands of dollars removing all the parts that make it a Pro.

I don't think people understand that you cannot order, under any circumstances, what 4Runner you want right now. You take what is on allocation that isn't already spoken for, which is almost nothing. I have spoken to 2 people at different Toyota dealerships, both of whom are senior sales persons who I spent considerable money with over the years - I got the same response from both when I asked if I could order a specific vehicle (with money not being an issue) - Can't do it.

To the OP...I understand you are taking what you can get, but from what I have read on what you want, you are really throwing a lot of money away by getting a Limited or the Sport.

I would also spent some time searching the term XREAS suspension and becoming familiar with what it is.

    ...just my .02 worth.

That makes perfect sense. For sure getting the pre approved loan is a good option.

I hope you find a good fit around your area. If you don't want 3rd row TRD Offroad premium is my top choice. I do love my Limited with its full time 4wd and 3rd row seats. I do love to have regular bumper on it but not sure how to fit parking sensors from Limited bumper to regular ones.

Hope you find the perfect match to your needs quick to take advantage of your pre approved loan.

Yep.. It's a pretty shitty situation to be in. But luckily I'll be able to make some of my money back by selling the OEM Sport parts that I don't use.

I've done a little bit of research on the XREAS suspension, and I'm not really a big fan of it unfortunately (for my bank account) but ya gotta do what ya gotta do sometimes I guess.

Are you talking about the shrockworks rocker trim or the rock sliders btw?
