How many times do other drivers flash their high beams at you?

Long, long, long drive from Portland, OR out to Steens Mtn and Alvord desert last week. Every night I was getting high beam flashed by drivers going in the opposite direction. Even when they saw me turn off my high beams from a distance, as soon as they got close theyd hit me with their high beams.

Is there or has there been a problem with headlight alignment on the 5th gen from the factory?

Are the 5th gen headlights that bright and at the right height to tee off other drivers?

Anyone else experiencing this?

Lastly, is there a "fix"?

 

I get it here in Long Island NY. I get keep a light trigger finger to flash my brights so they know it was my low beams. Likely it’s from the height of our truck and ignoramois. Eff them.

 

Finished a 2500mile trip in our new 21 orp and got flashed every night multiple time.

it looks like the lights are pointed a bit high and are super bright, so may look like highs??

 

I get this often also when on dark roads with oncoming traffic. While driving in the city no one does this and the lights don’t appear any higher than they should be. I believe pure lights especially 2021 are bright.

 

I get flashed occasionally, usually from low riding sedans.

I have a mild lift with stock headlights. Not sure if dealership adjusted lights when they installed the lift.

It seems like anything goes today with vehicle headlights. I've had many instances when I was blinded by oncoming vehicles.

I don't think LEO's enforce vehicle lights anymore. My biggest complaint is the amount of cars on the road at night driving with their lights off!

I think the general population has been dumbed down so much from automation, that they don't know how to turn their lights on anymore.

 

I always adjust my headlights when I lift. And my TRDPRO came with low beams much lower to my taste, the cutoff line was way closer. So I adjust them to my taste. It's an 8mm bolt under the plastic cover.

When the road is uneven with uphill and downhill no adjustment would help. Unless you get fancy adjustable headlights that levels and adjust the field of light level detecting on coming traffic.

I think driving at night should be part of the driver training. I don't know why some people stair at on coming car's headlights like an animal. Human have a better brain to look at where you are going vs get blinded by looking at headlights.

 

I have not experienced the lights flashing from other drivers at night - yet. But I have noticed the low beam lights on my 21' ORP are brighter than previously owned vehicles.

 

Yes. I just keep going and in like 3 seconds they’re gone.

 

not regularly with my humble SR5. My wife has a '20 Pilot that must have lasers for lo-beams, we get flashed at all the time in it.

 

I found a "how-to" on adjusting lights. I can't find it right away, but I'll keep looking. I did save the picture they had, although I didn't make note of the exact measurements. I DO recall that they specified the truck be 9 meters from the wall, and I figure most bricks are pretty standard, so the heights shouldn't be all that hard to figure.

Having said all that, I'd wager the lights that come from the factory with the vehicle are probably adjusted right for the state the truck was destined for. If people don't like them, tough. They need to learn to clost their left eye while approaching, if they think you're too bright. Once you go by, pop that left eye open, and you can see just fine.
I can't do it that way, since I'm blind on the left, due to running into a horse on my motorcycle. What he was DOING on my motorcycle I will never know. Ba-dum-PUMP.

 

I always thought my 2020 headlamps were weak.
It must be the height of the vehicle, cuz I get flashed a lot.

 

People are just getting used to LED lighting. The first time I saw it on a dark, sloped, curved road, it was annoying. Now I’m used to it. I drive a low car daily. But I have a pair of yellow night driving shades. If it becomes a prob.

 

I've only had my truck 3 months and other drivers were getting mad at me thinking I had my high beams on. I adjusted my low beams last night and now they hit just at the bottom of the rear windshield of most sedans now. Seems perfect now.

 

It may scare animals away from the road too.

 

Did you have instructions to follow to do this adjustment?

 

Nope just turned the lights on and lowered them using a Phillips screwdriver. Brought them down about 3/4 of an inch on my garage wall. Drove around and it seems like a good height. Nothing scientific about it, just what seems to look right.

The correct and proper procedure for adjusting the headlights, like after you change a bulb, for example. Will it stop people from flashing you (!! I wouldn't mind some of the other drivers I see flashing ME!!), I have no idea. But at least I found what I was looking for. Satisfying, personally.

Well for me when I use to live in South Florida where everyone drove low Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes, I would get flashed all the time with my HID bulbs I adjusted after lifting. Now that I live in Texas, where everyone drives a truck I never get flashed anymore.

 

I’m in Westcester County ny get flashed all the time with low beams on stock ride hight 21 TRD ORP.
I have Xenon depot high beam L E D S i think are twice as bright as the low beam, i just give a flick of the hi beam to let them know what i have on. I also have a set of Baja design fogs almost as bright as the high beam in amber only use them off road.The high & fogs are to bright for on coming trafic good for back roads with no street lights, bad weather & off road.

 

Those night drivers really do work IMO.

 

I was just adjusting my buddy's headlights. Hopefully I can edit it soon.

Here's some screen shots for now showing the nut you can adjust. It's a 8mm or 5/16. Clock-wise to raise and counter clock-wise to lower.

 

I've found if I'm unladen no one flashes me.

If I have like a feather in the cargo area, there's enough rear squat that the headlights must blind oncoming drivers.

My solution is to leave my brights on longer than I normally would and make sure that oncoming traffic "sees" me dim them... no one flashes me now.

Kind of the 4Runner equivalent of making sure the barista sees you put the tip in the jar.

 

Its funny on 2021 TRD Pro when high beam is on, for on coming traffic it looks like only 2 lights are on (both low beam and high beam inside same projector lens)
When I switch to low beams only, the fogs will come on, so 4 lights. To on coming traffic its like I'm turning on more lights.I don't know why Toyota did this.

 

As long as you’re not that guy who installs sun-brightness-level headlights so HE can see, all others be damned, then go ahead and try to adjust it so other drivers can see, too. Thank you. But if you gotta have super-blue 5-mile low beams and ALSO must drive with your bright fog lights on a clear night, you’ll get my brights in return no matter how many times you ‘dim’ your lights. Fogs on in clear conditions are stupid. As are stupidly bright aftermarket lights.

 

Exactly. Headlights should not be blinding oncoming traffic. Adjust them to that happy median that allows you see a ways but they aren’t a problem for other drivers. If you can’t see far enough to safely travel at your speed, you are going too fast for conditions.
I’ve had several new vehicles over the years and it seems to me most had headlight adjusted a bit too high from the manufacturer.

 

240 mile trip home last night and it happened three times on the back roads. I feel like I’m the jerk I used to get mad at.

 

I was at the Toyota Logistics facility today and they said that they adjust the headlights on incoming new vehicles as part of the port prep work while on the alignment rack at a distance of 10 Ft.

 

Well I have bright LED's in low & hi and with a proper adjustment I never get flashed same in the Tundra after lifting it and factory LED's adjusted we don't get flashed. I see a few new Raptors out there dragging ass and lights blinding everyone. Make a simple adjustment.

 

I have to say, the longer I own this the more annoying this gets. I’m considering g trying to find out the mod to keeping fogs on when you flash hi beams because I’m starting to think when I flash them back that they aren’t understanding at all that these are my lo beams. It’s literally multiple times per day

 

So on the way home last night I was going between high beam and low beam and I noticed something. I believe on all of my other cars the high beams were much brighter as well as being directed upward but the 4 runners maintain the same brightness but just add some height to the beam. As if it’s merely a visor rising to increase height on the beam. I cannot see a difference in brightness between the two just height difference.



Now is this something that’s common? Is this just the first car I’ve owned to do this?


If that’s the case I get why people are flashing me.
