TRD Pro gas mileage...

So when you go to fill up, and the odo says you went 280 miles, how many gallons does it take to fill up? Certainly not 23.

 

Yeah, best way to calculate actual mileage is to do it directly and manually.

1. Fill up tank and zero out your trip meter.
2. Whenever you decide to refill, take a note of the miles traveled since trip meter reset, and the exact amount of gallons that you put in.
3. Divide miles/gallons

The center instrument pod computer will tell you MPG in various forms. For example, MPG since manual reset (if you havent reset this, it will read MPG average since brand new), MPG since last refill, MPG since engine start, and “instant MPG”. Each of these readings can be wildly different because of data collection differences.

On the computer, I find that “MPG since refill” is most useful because it gives me a more recent average.

But the best way to calculate average MPG is to do it manually when you refill.

 

I have an 18 Limited w/50,000 miles, stock wheels/tires. I average 19MPG with 80% highway and 50MPH roads and 20% around town driving. Around town driving, w/ a lot of idling, stop and go is going to kill your mileage no matter what vehicle.

Side note - a 5,000LB SUV with a V6 and 5 speed tranny is NEVER going to have good mileage. We don't' buy 4Rs for the MPG we buy them for reliability, capability/storage.

 

Why would you subtract the mileage left on the dash?? The only thing you should be looking at is the odometer and the gallons readout on the pump when you fill up.

Like @McSpazatron mentioned, the only way to accurately calculate your fuel economy is to divide the actual mileage by the actual amount of fuel added. Reset your trip odometer when you fill up, then when you add fuel actually look at the pump and see how many gallons you are putting in. Do this before you waste your time going to the dealer.

I can pretty well guarantee you you are not putting 20 gallons of fuel in every time you fill up. The light comes on when you have about 5 gallons of fuel left.

 

Tire pressure?
Anything mounted on the roof?
Does it handle strangely?
How are the tires wearing?
Is the engine coming up to normal operating temperature?

 

Yeah, but if your gauge isn’t accurate (my suspicion), there’s no reason to trust the range estimate.

Have you tried resetting the mpg counter? If you scroll to the right place in the center cluster, there are a few different reset option.

11/12 is way out of spec, so something’s wrong somewhere.

 

You can’t use any mpg data from the car if you’re hand calculating to double check the car’s data. As was already said, it’s the number of miles on the odometer since the last complete refill divided by how many gallons fit in the tank this time.

 

I'm not sure how many times this can be said to make it stick...

 

I’m betting the gauge is fine. The range and gas gauge are probably extremely conservative. And it looks like the OP may have been doing calculations using 23gallons consumed, so Im betting his mileage is within spec as well. I dont think I’ve ever put more than a smidge over 18…maybe 19 gallons into mine.

 

2021 ORP with 400 miles on it and I was getting a 19.5 avg. on the highway last night. Bone stock

 

I reset the trip meter and mpg display each time I fill up. At first I used the manual calculation method as described above, but I found that as long as I reset the mpg display at fill up, it's as accurate as the math method.

 

I noticed the same thing. Manual calc and mpg per tank screen are within .5mph

 

Stock tires, 18.2 driving 80mph on a trip yesterday.

 

When I had my 2020 AG Pro with 285’s I was getting 17 highway. And that was driving it hard. So my new Tundra Pro is about 15 to 16 highway. So I cannot complain. Your only option is to sell it. Lol. Or drive it grandma style. Lol.

 

I am getting 18-22 mpg average. I drive very slow, so my mpg is not the norm.
I just drove a 2,000 mile trip and average speed approximately 60mph , I got 24mpg!
Not carrying much cargo, keeping speed steady tires at 33psi stock Bridgestone dueler HT
If I am getting double the gas miles of the OP.....what the frigg is going on with that 4runner? I would be taking it to a mechanic for sure!

 

Off topic car but I had a similar issue with my 2015 Civic SI. I was getting an easy 300-360 miles per tank and it dropped down to 250-280 out of no where. From the stuff I was looking up for the SI, it might have been a bad O2 sensor so I replaced it but it never changed. I tried different gas type (Shell, Cheveron, etc.) and no difference. Like someone said above before, I was going to replace the fuel pump because maybe it was going bad after years of commuting for school. Then I ended up selling the car and didn't get to it. So maybe a bad O2 sensor or fuel pump would be my guess.

 

If you read back, you'll see that the OP is basing this whole thing on the estimated miles per tank on the dash readout, and 23 gallons per fill up. My guess is that they're actually getting much better than what they think.

You're correct about getting better mileage at lower speeds. I get 12 at 80 MPH and 18-20 at 55-65.

 

i can sure appreciate the desire for better mileage. i purchased mine with every intention of putting LOTS of fuel in it!

Yeah, they're not known for good mileage. But, I try to squeeze out as much as possible since I drive it 25K miles a year.

 

I have a ‘16 Pro on stock tires and I get 17.5 driving around Chicago which is pedal to the metal on the highways. I’ve gotten 21 on road trips at 70 mph.

Where do you buy gas? Are they selling E85 out of a regular gas pump? That sounds like E85 mileage. I would try a different gas station or go somewhere reliable like Costco. Something is not right.

 

I get 17.8 to 20 on the highway @78 - 80 mph from East Pa to central Pa, up and down the mountains and the same to Florida and back. On the Florida trip the worst was 15 mpg, I chalk it up to Florida gas. My father in law says his vette gets worse gas mileage in Florida than it did in pa. I don’t think it’s due to the weather, because here in pa we have had the same humidity and temperature as Florida this summer.

 

On a 2 miles trip, I got around 6 MPG. Normally it is anywhere between 16 and 20 for me. Going 50-60 with no stops and no hard acceleration got me 21+ MPG. The "global" all time MPG is 17 and change. I can see folks getting 10-12 MPGs when driving citi stop and go. My 5.7 Hemi Rebel gets about 15MPG, so 17-ish MPG with the 4Runner is not a shocker...

 

My SR5 with the V6 and stock tirees is averaging between 18-21mpg. As I have gotten older my lead foot has decreased in size, maybe that is my difference.

 

Today while I was out running around. 19 mpg on this tank of gas. Running Nitto Ridge Grapplers 285 LT's.

 

19mpg is respectable......looking at the window sticker on new 4 runner it says 16city/19highway.....so you are right there.

 

The roof rack might reduce mileage a bit.

Seriously, I'd have someone(wife, or other family member)drive it for a tank full of two because if that's the best you can do,(imo) there's a serious problem, somewhere.

 

The problem was the OP's math. Dividing the estimated miles to empty on the dash by 23 gallons would make anyone's mileage look terrible.

this is why I use fuelly to track everything. just plug in all the info form the fuel up (odometer rating, cost of gas and amount) and it does the rest. Plus you'll know exactly how much money your vehicle has drank in fuel.
