I took 2 years of French in High School (merica!). Was horrible at it, and almost failed both years.

I remembered enough of it to get the Djiboutian customs ladies to laugh at me - while trying to get vehicles I ordered out of customs.
I didn't realize that they were all looking for bribes. Which I'm barred from giving.

Well, this conversation just took an interesting turn.

    Bribes?

    Customs?

    Somalia?

Meanwhile, I'm doing moab slickrock with a sandwich in my hand. :)

To be perfectly honest, I don’t know. I have never been able to find a concrete answer to that question in Toyota literature. Maybe some of our members with more experience utilizing both systems can add their input based on experience?

Also remember, ATRAC is just controlling ABS. MTS adds throttle input control. So it’s not a direct apples-to-apples comparison of systems. But I understand your question.

I missed that one, talking about Somalian ladies and stuff. Atrac off multi-terrain stays on the selection you left it.

With the 4Runner stopped, shift the transmission into neutral gear and move the transfer case shift lever to the L4 position.

Press the ON/OFF button on the multi-terrain selector knob, then turn the dial until rock mode is selected. That engages the system.

As the terrain changes, you can use the various multi-terrain select modes while moving at speeds seven miles per hour or less by turning the dial to change or dictate a different mode.

When the multi-terrain select control system is active and when A-TRAC operates, the slip indicator will blink.

Multi-terrain select will not operate if crawl control has been activated.

To cancel the operation, push the ON/OFF switch, and the multi-terrain select control will deactivate.

The display in the center of the instrument panel will show “multi-terrain select control has been canceled”.

Multi-terrain select will automatically cancel if the 4Runner’s speed exceeds seven miles per hour.

Also, MTS can be used in 4HI on the lowest setting.

Absolutely. Doesn't make too much sense because of the cancelation on 7 Mph.

I think @DRobs is asking a slightly different question.

ATRAC is strictly “ON” or “OFF” for ABS intervention to maintain traction. There is no adjustability. But what is the equivalent level of ABS intervention in Multi-Terrain Select as ATRAC? Is ATRAC at about the same level as “Rock” mode in MTS? Or is it closer to “Sand/Mud”? How much slippage does ATRAC allow compared to MTS?

Sorry about that, it's a good question, hence, hard to define. To me, Atrac feels different, more grip, so, hard to tell. I think according to the terrain and drive style this might differ from person to person. To many variables to pinpoint I think.

I didn't even know that it cancelled. I thought I used it on some mushy dirt roads last spring. I never noticed it shutting off.

    Oh, I forgot about that.

Does the rear locker automatically disengage above 5mph? The manual just says don't go faster than 5mph with the locker engaged.

Also, I found with the Jeep that using the locker frequently helps keep it working. Lots of Rubicon owners wait until they're desperate to discover their lockers, that they've never used, won't engage or disengage. Toyota probably doesn't have that issue, but....

True. I like having all of the gizmos, but I'm pretty much fine with 4HI, 4LO, and the locker. I do use A-trac as well.

Same here, I know how the gizmo's work; hence, I'm old school and like to control the vehicle myself in the most simple way according the terrain.

I just went down and got ARB front and rear lockers with my re-gear :spending:. That made all this confusion a lot easier to solve.

Way to go; In my opinion still the best, front & rear lockers. Re-gear 4.56 or 4.88 ?

Not saying the 4R,s system is no good, It's a very good system. Just for most overly complicated. The purpose of my thread was giving members a simple guide to use the 4R off-road system. Like mentioned here on this thread a lot of people don't go off-road; some do, every now and then, and forget all the different settings by the time they get on the trail and get in the pickle because of that. Put some notes in your cell, might come handy.

I understand. Not bad having the different options noted down.

    I went with 4.88 re-gear.

MTS disengages automatically at 7 mph? Even in 4-hi?

I had a situation last week where I probably could've used MTS - Rock Mode and possibly Crawl Control.
Was climbing a steep hill with steep rock ledges. I had Atrac on and the rear locker engaged. With my front tires up on a ledge, I found myself slipping sideways grinding my sliders and skids on the ledge. The rear locker causes that. I was able bump the 4Runner up the ledge and subsequent ledges but it wasn't pretty. I almost used my winch.

At one point I felt / heard Atrac really kick in on the front. This is the 1st time, I've ever noticed Atrac kick in. I always thought it was kind of passive. I'm due for a brake job in the next 5k miles and that may have something to do with it. I really have to ride the brakes for dropping off ledges (to prevent crushing the rear bumper) in this area. I'm finding that 1st gear 4low only drops the speed of the 4Runner to 3 or 4 mph and that's just too fast for down hill crawls.

I might have to go back and hit this trail again testing some of the different modes. The trail is questionable, it's not on the approved map but is frequented by side x sides and atvs. I didn't take any pics or vids for that reason. That being said it's probably one of the most difficult trails I've been on so far in this area. A stock vehicle without skids / sliders could really get some body damage on this trail.

    Good intel.

FWIW, Crawl Control also works if you put the truck in 1st gear instead of Drive. I think it’s more effective for steep descents in that configuration.

Totally correct "1st gear 4low only drops the speed of the 4Runner to 3 or 4 mph and that's just too fast for down hill crawls."

If you do this a lot brakes are very important, otherwise you need to re-gear.

Crawl control is too dangerous in this type of situation, because you are going to need your brakes, which will override crawl-control; when this happens it's brutal and quick, you will start sliding.

Excellent perspective. But not all situations are so dramatic. For example, it works great on my steep rock driveway in the rain. :p

My point was that you can utilize Crawl Control in 1st gear, and not everyone knows that.
