My trd which has less than 300 miles has paint coming off at the fender. I know about crappy white paint so I'm not blaming anyone but myself for getting white. Its on the rear driver side fender, should I just put touch up and call it a day?

Toyota paint is fucking awful. I can't figure out why they can't get it right. I've had one 4Runner and three Tacomas that all had shit paint. I'm hoping my '20 doesn't suffer the same, but I wouldn't bet $5 on it.

Why does it look like there is a gouge out of the plastic?

Its plastic. There’s not much touch up paint will do.

That sucks on a new vehicle! Looks like a solid rock chip. Wheel fender?

replace with aftermarket, or take off and vinyl wrap it with matching color

Looks like a gouge to me also, or maybe a door ding. With the shape of some rear doors, the high part that starts up over the rear wheel well would be in almost perfect alignment with where you say that is...just a hunch, or else as was said, maybe a rock chip. Bummer.
I don't think the original paint job is to blame.

    A bare frame.
That’s a gouge. Any paint would do that

That's obviously not a paint or color problem and if you really examined it I'm surprised you'd think it is.

Looks like a ding to me too. I have had a couple of rock chips on my white SR5, but I was able to use touch up paint.

The paint is super thin, that's true, but other than that, I haven't had any issues with the white so far.

    Fingers crossed,

IMHO, all colors have pros and cons. I've had issues with red and blue vehicles. With this summers heat wave, I have appreciated having the color white.

In the sun, I can touch my white 4Runner without burning my hand unlike the wife's Sequoia which is a dark color, which will burn if I touch it in the hot summer sun.

Its not a door ding, I've owned it since 2 miles and it was never parked by another vehicle. Only explanation is a rock chip which i understand happens but I've had a ton of vehicles over my years and drove literally over a million miles and I'm sure I've accumulated a ton of rock chips during that time and it never gauged the paint. The paint is flawed, I had a 2020 white one and my buddies kid set her 10 pound scooter on it and it took the paint off the door on that one.

It is what it is but don't defend toyotas white paint. Like I said I have no one to blame but my own stupidity for buying a white one so my only warning to fellow white paint owners is definitely don't off road it and don't drive it on road because rock chips will guage your paint.

Yes I'm slightly annoyed that toyota uses crap paint but am more upset at myself for being the idiot fan boy who keeps buying them lol. At the end of the day I know it's just a depreciating hunk of metal so I won't lose any sleep over it

So another manufacturer's paint would of prevented the plastic gouge? Shit sign me up.

I don't think any vehicles paint job is designed to have a 10lb scooter rub against it.

Your expectations might be a little high.

Lol! In what world wouldn't it hold up?? She didn't slam her scooter on to the door, Jesus i thought I was a blind toyota fan boy but you guys are a whole other level. I'm not knocking the car and my idiot ass would probably buy a 3rd white toyota (actually I wouldn't) but I would buy another toyota, I get the manufacturing is a lot different than my beloved 3rd gen but I still think it's the best brand out there hence why I keep buying them but they still have faults and you guys should take your blinders off and stop blindingly defending them when you don't even understand what you're defending. You're just arguing at the sake of being a keyboard warrior

No one's defending Toyota in this situation. They're just saying that it's not a flaw in the paint. It's obvious to everyone here except you because you're mad about it.

Ya know Pavo you might be onto something about Toyota's quality lately.

So I was doing some off roading and I got high centered. I had basically the entire weight of the vehicle rested on this skid plate, the tires were even free spinning. I had to get winched off.

Now my skid plate is dented and rusty. Toyota really needs to up the quality of their skid plates.

I don’t think they can make their skid plates any better. It would add weight. Even my RCI aluminum skid plates and extra cross members added weight.

we had a green 97 Camry where the paint faded/went to shit pretty quickly but the later ones have held up well. My kid just bought a2016 Camry in white....looks really good for the age. maybe some production runs were better than others

Looks like something struck it from left to right, going by the little pile of paint on the right side of the gouge (even looks a bit like a hole in the pic). So yes, I would touch it up and be done with it. As others have brought up, regardless of whether your particular paint has some sort of flaw or is crap, you’d probably have had the same type of gouge with any color.

This whole thread is rediculous! Looks to me like he probably parked at WalMart. This is NOT a Toyota paint color issue.
Fix it if it bothers you. It's not Toyota's responsibility.
    Get over it!
And OH!, be sure you never go off road!

LOL. Guys, we are all idiots for buying a white Runner. You guys really didn’t know about the shield blue, rock red and metal black? They never get rock chips and they just announced a scooter free yellow for 2022. You are all a bunch of ….oh look, a squirrel !!!!!!

I felt your pain. The first few rock dings are really disturbing.

The problem is that there is a lot of forward facing plastic on the 5th Gens. Any rock or pebble *will* chip paint and gouge into the plastic. I have dozens of them in 3 years of buying mine new. I got real good at touch up with a Dr Colorchip kit.

However, that chip of yours looks pretty damn large. That would have made quite a noise if it was a rock hit at highway speed. Do you remember when it happened?

You might consider going to a body shop and see if they can fill it in, prime it and do an adequate paint touch up. Don’t worry about perfection. If you drive it you’ll be getting more frontal hits.

I have been keeping mine off the freeway until i get the bug/stone deflector installed. OP's look's like its above wheel well looks like one heck of hit though by something.

I do recall reading threads about the white paint prior to me ordering my vehicle and issues with it. I ended up with silver which is just what i wanted anyway.

Nothing is perfect unfortunately, heck I was reading about all the frame issues which still makes me nervous and I saw the issues first hand on 2 year old used vehicles. I also remember a thread about the bolts for back seat sticking through rear well. I get many folks could care less about this stuff and some of us really do care.

Personally I would get that paint chip corrected OP, thats just me though.

I think it's a rock chip, I have a few on my Classic Silver 4 runner too.
Like mac1usa said "i would get that paint chip corrected OP,thats just me though".........well me too.
I would add that its on plastic so it wont rust like it would on a metal fender.
You can take some time and find a good body repair shop. Should not cost too much?
    Not toyota 's fault.

Toyota paint quality is truly crap -- an embarrassment.

However, that's a chip. The paint doesn't spontaneously pop open like a wound.

My Dad a few years ago pulled my Accord into my garage when we were leaving to go fishing. He pulled up to far and hit a jet style kerosene heater I had at front of garage.

It left a small crack and the bottom trip around bumper and drove me nuts. I paid $300 to have it plastic welded and painted since it drove me nuts.

I am probably over the top though with fit and finish.

I just received another weather Tec bug snd stone deflector since the first one had a few light scratches. Even these are not perfect.

I would definitely get it fixed and have a beer. Just ask whoever does your painting to cover the whole thing well. I have some guys go crazy when they spray clear coat. Then you have “sandy”feel to the paint in other areas that will need to be rubbed out. I am ocd though and probably should drink more beer
