Power was flickering all day yesterday.

I need to move to the coast where it’s 60 all year.

I'm in Santa Cruz. It hit 90 on Wednesday (as expected). Weather report called for 100 on Thursday and a sea breeze came up and knocked it down to 72. I was pleasantly surprised

    https://www.worldweatherattribution...possible-without-human-caused-climate-change/

    Main findings
    • Based on observations and modeling, the occurrence of a heatwave with maximum daily temperatures (TXx) as observed in the area 45–52 ºN, 119–123 ºW, was virtually impossible without human-caused climate change.
    • The observed temperatures were so extreme that they lie far outside the range of historically observed temperatures. This makes it hard to quantify with confidence how rare the event was. In the most realistic statistical analysis the event is estimated to be about a 1 in 1000 year event in today’s climate....

If true? China & India(just to name a couple)need to do their part in bringing about change. Until and unless they do nothing will change. Again, if true?

And since they won’t do anything about it, we should probably build more coal power plants so we can have air-conditioning instead of blackouts when it gets hot.

Let's bring back leaded gas too. And repeal all the clean air and water laws that have resulted in dramatic improvements in the health of our environment and fellow citizens. Other countries are polluting like there's no tomorrow, so why shouldn't we?

I think we should lead the way when it comes to developing cleaner power sources and sell India and China the technology rather than just lay down and blame them for the worlds problems.

China and India have zero interest in the environment, so all we are doing is driving our energy prices up and giving ourselves a shitty quality of life by turning off our air-conditioning at 4 PM during a heatwave because we can’t keep the lights on.

There’s almost this type of myopic stupidity that makes people think that if a few western countries go completely green it is going to matter when 2/3 of the world’s population pollutes the ever living shit out of this planet .

Assuming they'd willingly spend their money on the technology. I question that.

Technology is where all the money is right now. Maybe they buy it from us, maybe they don’t. In the mean time, we develop technology that keeps us healthier and creates more domestic jobs. We still win.

Hardly. I quoted the post that prompted mine. It suggested bringing back coal fired power plants. From a pollution, human health and climate change perspective, this suggestion is pretty far out. There are less destructive alternatives.

As for China et al, yes, this is a real problem. No one's saying it isn't. The point, as Nimby said, is that we can lead the way, improving our own health and environment and making a (small) dent in the larger problem, while working on ways to make a bigger dent.

A defeatist attitude on such things is self fulfilling. And contradicted by the actual history of US and global efforts. For example the ozone layer.

You keep acting like we are this big happy sweet global family with shared interests and China doesn’t want to be the dominant superpower by the end of the century, even when they have openly declared this.

Not at all. I agree with you about China. The post of mine you quoted clearly acknowledges that China is a problem. My point is that fact is not a good excuse for inaction. Our inaction will only make things worse.

No changes happen by just talking and complaining. Money is the key. Either you give them money or withhold money to get the desired effect. And it takes some skilled govt negotiators to get the point across.

    Agree!
Not sure how old you are, but I remember when our toys, transistor radios and much more started arriving from Japan. When they became to costly we moved to Taiwan for cheap goods(that lead to the bankruptcy of US made Schwinn Bicycles - just one of many companies that died as a result of cheap imports in the 70's). In recent years China replaced all of them. Sadly, we have been our own worst enemy in pursuit of the cheapest - not the best - made in the USA.

As a fellow Californian(regrettably) I'm not sure what would bother me most, a coal plant in my backyard or feces and needles? Pick your poison - I guess.

The good news is we could prevent or limit both from happening (to an extent).

Bringing back manufacturing, more middle class jobs, and incorporating new technology would serve us well, I think.......like the large infrastructure projects this country underwent around the WW2 era and later. We are in desperate need of an update to power and water supply to many places in this country.

But for some reason there's a lot of resistance to anything new and no one wants to pay for it. So we will continue a patchwork of fixes to try and solve these problems related to old, decaying infrastructure until there's some sort of tipping point, I'm guessing. Which is unfortunate because it's preventable if we start working on it now.

I’ve been around a while, maybe not quite as long as you ;), but yeah, I remember the influx of imports. I was also aware of the bicycling impacts. I think I had one of the last US Schwinn 10-speeds built. Great bike with French components. At one time US bikes, especially the frames, were made here. As prices got higher they were outsourced to Japan. Then Korea. Then Taiwan. Then China. Wherever labor was the cheapest.

International trade is great. The trick is to balance it out so it doesn’t decimate whole US industries like we have.

Well said. The vulnerability of our power, water and other major infrastructures (whether to natural disasters, routine weather events, hacking, heightened demand etc.) is really troubling. And we and our fellow citizens are routinely harmed by these problems. Repairing, expanding and fortifying these systems would seem to be good for the country as a whole, making us healthier, creating jobs and making us more economically competitive with China and others. As is often the case, it's a matter of will more than anything else. Can enough of us agree to invest in these things so that they get done? Time will tell.

Yes, if it would mean they could keep the power on, which they currently can’t.

Especially when it gets hot or windy.

It gets particularly irritating when you see our perfectly groomed governor sitting in his air-conditioned office telling us to turn our AC off when it’s 114° outside or he will turn it off for us.

Also with the wildfires we’ve been having, I don’t think I could detect any air quality difference.
