A little background to start things off.....
We bought this 'runner for my wife back in 2012 straight from Reno Toyota after someone had traded it in on a Highlander. It's a 2005 Limited 4x4, 4.7 V8, 78k miles on it and quite clean. Within a week of owning it I had hacked off the stock exhaust and welded in a Magnaflow 14" with a forward axle dump under the rig, now we could hear the V8. Next came a lift, Bilstein 5100's all around and OME 885 front/ 895 rear coils. Added Raceline Raptor black wheels in 17x9 with 315/70/17 Duratrac's. I also built front, rear bumpers, and rock sliders for it. Sat this way for nearly the next 4 years as the Wife's DD rig and the rig we took on trips in the winter through the mountains.

    Fast forward....
I also owned a 98 4Runner at the same time(it's what made the wife want a 4runner of her own!). It was a 3.4L v6, 5 speed manual, 4x4 SR5. Bought it for $4400 with 200K miles from the 2nd owner who had it since 2000 when it had 20xxx miles as a trade in at the local Toyota dealer. He had a 2" stack of service records from the whole time he owned it!

I built it up with a variety of mods over the years including:
3" lift with OME heavy coils and Bilstein 5100's, front and rear.
4.30 gear swap with E locker rear end.
295/70/18 (34x12") Nitto trail grapplers on Procomp Helldorado wheels
Fully Relentless armored: front and rear bumpers, skids, sliders, as well as a roof rack.
Plenty of LED lights: Rigid Dually's in the front bumper, Rampage 22" LED on top of the bumper, 42" radius bar on the roof, as well as rock lights.

This was the original "Relentless Runner"

After deciding that the 3rd gen wasnt quite cutting it for me, and that I didnt want to dump even more money into a 18 year old vehicle, I decided that selling the 3rd gen and building up the 4th gen V8 would be best, then get the wife a new rig. So planning and parts ordering began, and RelentlessRunner 2.0 was born!

    The pile of parts:

    And so it began......

So, fresh out of the shop being built (I did a week long marathon build! 14hr days working on this thing to get it ready) I loaded it up and headed to Moab UT for Rock Therapy 2016.
My wife is still editing photos, but here are a few to start. I'll add more as I get them uploaded.

    Behind the Rocks

Ran 'Trifecta': Poison spider mesa, Golden spike, Gold Bar Rim all linked in one day.

Group shot on Gold Bar trail

Took a bit longer than expected when I snapped the driver inner tie rod randomly on this obstacle called 'Body Snatcher' on Golden Spike. Thankfully Jason and Jlee ran out for parts for us and Wishbonerunner had a spare (thanks!). Apparently the 4runner/FJC have different inner tie rods than the Tacoma, weird.

Wife ran the trail "Fins 'n' Things"

I then moved on to Hell's Revenge. Ran up Hells Gate and also conquered Escalator on the trail.

    Pics to come!

Nice build. Rig looks good. Any plans to put that rear bumper with swing out into production for 4th gens? I'm not too keen on the ones that you have to cut the stock bumper, but looks like you did the side pieces all the way up like the CBI one. I know Mobtown is working on a 4th gen rear too. Will be nice to have options besides CBI that don't require cutting up the stock rear.

This rear isn't up to my strength standard. Only way to get it is to do the cut rear slim profile style like our 5th gen rear or make the bumper excessively bulky. I will be going the trimmed factory bumper route on the next one, the bumper that is on it will be cut up and dropped in my scrap bin.

Seems to be pulling about 10.5" Upper uniball is limiting down travel, yet has a lot of room for more misalignment for up travel. I think they could angle the upper uniball cup a hair differently and gain some more travel, the King's had more down travel left in them, but I had to strap them to keep from tearing up the upper uniballs.

They do! I was expecting the 11.5-12" but only saw 10 without the coilovers in. Compress the bumps a bit and you would probably see that 1/2 i'm throwing in there, definitely dont see the 11.5" though

Not sure, gotta get caught up now that we're almost completely moved into the new shop. If she had her way it would have already been built. She keeps saying how much she hates driving a completely bone stock rig. lol

Thanks! Need to update this thread too, new rear bumper (with lots of frame/body mods), and completely new rear suspension going in right now also. Going a little bit out of the box on the rear end, my old coils sagged after 6 months and the Icons were complete crap so thats all gone now

Love the V8 in the 4th gen. We got the wife a 5th gen after I built this rig up and she was just never in love with the new rig, sold it a couple months ago for a 2017 TRD offroad manual trans Tacoma that she's building up now (already long travel'ed on Kings and some armor on it). She still has a soft spot for this 4th gen V8 and would never let me get rid of this rig, really been a great 4runner (plus it's only got 109k miles on it now, pretty low for a 12-year-old rig so it has a lot of life left).

Yeah v8 is the way to go with the 4th gen! It's a shame they never offered that 4.7 in the Tacoma or the 5th gen runners.

That's badass!! If I ever find a wife, I hope she's as cool as yours! :D

Have any pics of the Tacoma? or do yall have a link for a build thread?

Yeah that's super low miles for that year model. I've got an 09 Tacoma with 225k miles on it and its running great! That think will be in great shape for a really long time. Don't the v8 runners have a timing belt vs the 4.0 with the timing chain? I feel like I remember talking to you about this in another thread on here not too long ago..

    I agree, would have loved a 4.7 V8 2nd gen Tacoma!
LOL, yeah she digs the offroad stuff, camping, trucks, etc. Not bad! :D I can try and snag a pic of the new tacoma when I get a chance, it's coming along nicely!
Yes, 4.7 is timing belt, I did ours at about 108k supposed to do it every 100k I believe, dealer told us it was done before we bought it but after investigating the service records and looking under the hood for the decal stating it was done I determined it was not and did it back in January this year. The timing belt is really the only thing to consider as a negative of the V8 IMO(considering it is an interference engine if the belt lets go) but timing belt breaks seem pretty rare.
