There's enough people who will overpay because of their want vs need hence why the stealerships are doing it right now

You need to find a dealer that does not charge over msrp for a Pro. I have never paid over msrp for any of my Pros.

I'm not looking for a pro (I would love to have one). You also never lived thru something like this before, none of us have.

Unprecedented times right now! It is a seller's market if you have something to sell. Just like the current housing market! Playing hardball as a buyer will get you nowhere if you really want to buy a 4Runner or a house.

To each their own! But if you have 10 people that want it and can afford it, and there is only one Lunar Rock 4R available to be sold - the ball is in the seller's hand. For those that can readily afford it, $10,000 might not be that much for them.

Even if I was filthy rich there is NO way I would pay $10,000.00 more just to have a " special " color vehicle.
Please, no offense intended,... but to me, that would be insane. 4Runner or not, it's just a D#*% vehicle.
Do we want go and performance? Or show. C'mon. More power I guess to the dealer if they can get over on those type of people.

It also has to be said though, there is an inherent value in a special edition of anything. Both to the owner, as well as the value it retains for resale

I had a cllassic '99 limited edition supercharged p/u that I bought new. One owner and only 30k miles on it. Yes, I sold it a few months back for a premium price, however, color had NOTHING to do with it.

I hear you and agree with you on many levels! It took me several months to decide between a ORP and a Pro because of trying to rationalize the cost difference. I knew I was paying $10,000 - $12,000 more for a Pro for what I feel is really about $5,000 - $6,000 in upgrades from a ORP - special color aside because originally I wanted MGM in either the ORP or Pro. I ultimately decided I wanted a Lunar Rock and got lucky by finding one for $2,000 above MSRP. There were no negotiations! The cutoff in my mind was $3,000 above MSRP for the LR Pro. I would not pay $10,000 above MSRP for a LR even though that appears to be the going rate these days. Additionally, I am self employed and it is a tax write off - everyone's circumstances are different!

I think color is just another way they're marketing a vehicle to be "special" nowadays, especially when it's only available for one year

Every pro will hold its value regardless of color though for sure

Am I reading this right? Extra $10,000 for a color that is not even custom to your vehicle? That's insane.

You can get a custom color on a Lamborghini order for $9.2k unless you want Matte finish which is around $14k.

Out of 4 the 4 dealerships within 150 miles of me 1 was $2K over MSRP, 1 was $10K over MSRP, 1 was MSRP, and 1 was MSRP or slightly under.

Needless to say I won't be buying from those that are over MSRP. The one that is at or slightly under MSRP will take a $500 deposit on a '22 model, however, it's non-refundable. You can change it though to any other vehicle so if I decided to just get an ORP I could do that.

The closest dealership is the one that's $2K over MSRP on the Pro while the ORP would probably be MSRP and they're who I've purchased my last 2 vehicles from (4Runner SR5 in '17 and a RAV4 XLE Premium in '20) but they are a$$holes when it comes to the Pro models and I don't want to give them more money honestly. The next closest is an hour away and they are the ones that will well at or slightly below MSRP on the Pro and they have below MSRP (at least a couple thousand) on their ORP vehicles generally so I'm thinking I'll buy it from them.

I'm still thinking about taking it to the dealer we bought our last 2 from though for the first 2 years and when they ask why I'll just tell them that I told them I wouldn't pay above MSRP on the Pro.

I'm right now thinking a '22 MGM Pro will be my next ride. Vroom is supposed to be picking up my '15 SR5 in the next few days so I'll be without for probably 6 months but that's okay.

I wasn't going to do an ORP because that thing still doesn't have dual climate control. So dumb.

Wife and I are like 10+ degrees different :p

Don't worry about scratches. Toyota paint quality sucks balls, and every color (except maybe white) shows every little scratch.

My Jeeps had a lot of orange peel, but the paint was fairly tough. Toyota must do better in this regard.

That's one of the main reasons I want the Pro as well except I just want it for the Auto setting.

"Everyone will be paying at least msrp for 2022 models (non pro) as the shortage and demand are still there"

I could definitely see this happening with ALL the 4R trim levels selling at least MSRP going into 2022. I've read where many believe the chip shortage will continue through next year. Sure glad I decided on a 2021.

People have been paying over MSRP for PROs for years. It's nothing new. Seems silly to me. Now is probably the only time it has ever made any sense.

And every other trim holds their value very well also.

Higher resale value is just something people say to rationalize paying the PRO tax. I'd be curious to see a realistic comparison of the resale value taking into consideration the every PRO is sold at or above MSRP while other trims are consistently discounted by several thousand dollars.

Toyota paint does suck balls. My family has had Toys since I was a baby and every one since the 80's has had really bad paint jobs that go to crap fairly quickly no matter how much you take care of them. It's baffling they choose not to go with quality paint.

There are 100's or even 1000's of posts on every toyota forum dating back to the beginning of the internet, complaining about the quality of paint from Toyota and the company hasn't changed a thing because we keep buying.

Next 4runner I'm considering to have it wrapped in PPF (paint protection film) like they do on Ferrari's and Lambos. It would be cheaper in the long run than a new paintjob and probably help save some resale value.

I think Magnetic Steel Gray is the ultimate color for sports cars, but for my new Rav4 XLE Premium I am happy with Lunar Rock. I don' keep my cars for more than 2 or 3 years, so I am not concerned about the color going out of style. At the rate that people are seeking out cars in this color, I doubt it will decline in popularity anytime soon. Magnetic Steel Gray---just like black, silver, and white will always be around. These colors really don't set any car apart. When you drive a car in any of these colors, nobody really bothers to notice the make or model you're driving. Cars in those colors are a dime a dozen. On the other hand, people always go out of their way to compliment my Toyota Rav4 in Lunar Rock. They want to know the name of the color and ask lots of questions about the car - - not that this is important. There are too many more important reasons to select a car than for its color.

Best Pro colors Cement & Cavalry Blue. All the others are either too LOUD or too meh, which is what I think of the Lunar Rock color, they should’ve added some kind of pearl effect in it, probably would have made it pop. Just my opinion.

Personally, I buy vehicles because of their reputation for prowess and reliability. I don't care about funky colors and bling blang. Color does not make the vehicle any better, and I don't really care if the next guy likes it or not.

I've bought a lot of cars on a tight budget and you just kinda go with what you can get. Color doesn't matter.

But when I'm spending $50k+ on a new truck, I'm going to get exactly what I want. That kind of money doesn't include compromise, for me.

It's such a personal decision though, and not one that can be made by polling strangers, imo.
