I just saw this article and am really digging this new midsize by Ford, which is a never before said statement by me. I just like midsize, versatile trucks. Loved my Tacoma and will most likely own another one. However, a brand new truck, under $20k with a 500 mile range is exactly what the market needs, IMO.

Not gonna lie, that’s a pretty sweet truck for only $20k starting price. I dig it.

I’d rather have a stripped down Taco with a short cab.

Toyota & Nissan both shot themselves in the foot by no longer offering a smaller sized pickup, or at least a 4 cyl. regular cab option. Ford will sell a ton of these at that price.

Never in my wildest imaginings did I ever think I'd say such a thing, but Ford might have the most exciting new product offerings of any major automaker -- and in many years.

    To wit:

    > The F150 Lightning looks like a major tipping point for EV adoption in the US. A tough, real body-on-frame truck that looks like a F150, performs better than any other F150 (towing, off road ability, acceleration etc.), has more places to store stuff, and can power not just your tools and playthings but your whole house for days in an emergency? And all for the same price as a gas F150? That sure looks like a game changer. Yes, range is less than the gas version and charging takes longer. It's not a panacea. But it might represent the single most compelling reason that currently exists for putting an EV in your garage.

    > The new Bronco is a hell of a looker, has incredible, innovative features topping rival Jeep, and by all accounts should be an absolute monster off road. Even the glorified crossover "Bronco Sport" has impressed with its off-road ability, doing far better than anyone could have reasonably expected.

    > The Mustang Mach-E may have a sacrilegious name (why oh why couldn't they have just called it the Mach-E?) but it's probably got the best combo of EV specs and price of any EV other than a Tesla Model 3 -- which is a car you can't get serviced down at your local dealer.

    > This new Maverick. It's genius to design an affordable, fuel efficient and easy-to-park truck for people who value a bed but don't need to do heavy duty hauling or towing. How many people have bought full sized pickups and never needed half the capability they offered? The Maverick, like the Ridgeline, is a smarter choice for many of them. What's more, in this vehicle Ford is offering consumers something as financially prudent and practical as an econo-box, but with capabilities we've never been able to get before at an econo-box price. Now you have to ask yourself, why commute to work in a Civic or Accord when you could do so just as inexpensively in an actual pickup truck?

While not new, Ford also makes one of the best all around sports cars you can buy, especially on a bang-for-the-buck basis, in the Mustang GT.

    Really, really impressive.

Now, having said all that, how's the quality? Time will tell, but we don't have good reason to be confident that it will approach the Japanese brands. In my book that's a real reason to be wary of any of these new products. Reliability and durability trump a lot of other attributes in my book. But there's no arguing with what Ford has done here in terms of specs, innovation and design, and price. I've never in my life felt the need for a pickup, but the Lightning, and to a lesser extent the Maverick, sure have gotten my attention. Wow.

Heard someone refer to a Honda Ridgeline once as a trucklet. Same concept but with a hybrid motor. Unibody frame, front wheel drive, basically a Prius with a truck bed. Not something I'll ever have a use for but I'm sure they will sell a lot of them.

Not a midsize, though. It's a compact. More like a 1st gen Tacoma.

It will be interesting to see how well this does, and what Toyota might offer to compete.

Not interested in a Ford CVT hybrid. Sounds like a recipe for frequent trips to the service department.

The 8-speed + turbo-4, OTOH, looks pretty sweet. Great size truck that would be a very useful third vehicle for our family.

It's awesome that you can get all engines on all trims. So I can get a real transmission and 250 hp on the base truck for $22,575. Vroom!

That’s what I thought! The price alone is just refreshing.

No doubt! As would I but I like that market is giving us more options than just a brodozer. My favorite truck (and really the only option I would buy at this point) is the first gen taco.

Ah, thanks for the correction, yes, compact is more accurate. I am interested to see how they respond also.

Exactly, nothing but a smaller Ridgeline without the Honda quality. Plus to get the optional 4wd and bigger powertrain it would probably be pushing 30K easily. Wait 3 to 4 years to get all the bugs out.

Nope. You can get an AWD Maverick with the turbo-4 for $24,795. This thing is legit inexpensive, compared to the rest of the market.

True, but there really is no market to compare it to. It's smaller and less capable than the midsize market. It really has no competition in the US currently.

That said, I think they will sell like hotcakes. If so, I wonder who else will decide to compete with it.

I think the point, which I was trying to make in my earlier post, is that it's competing with (and will draw a lot of customers from) two big parts of today's market: commuter-car buyers, and pickup buyers who don't need a lot of towing and hauling capability.

The price, MPG and size of the Maverick sends a big message to the econobox/commuter consumer: Why buy one of those boring things in order to be sensible when you can be just as sensible buying something more fun and more useful? Here, I'm offering you the same MPG, the same ease of parking and driving -- and the same pricetag. But you get to have a useful bed, real ground clearance -- and a cool look!

To the pickup truck buyers who don't need all the capability they have, the Maverick is saying: Hey, why spend all that extra money on a big unwieldy truck, with bad MPG, when all you really need is a bed to throw some crap in from time to time?

That all says homerun to me.

Who cares? This never shows everything anyway.
If Toyota responds to this by making a small 2 door 2 seat pickup with respectable 4WD/AWD, I'm trading in my 4Runner. If it's body on frame, I'm trading in my 4Runner even faster.

I like what Ford's doing here, and I echo the other poster with my admiration for what Ford is doing in general these days. I might have considered the Maverick instead of a 4Runner if it already began existing years ago, but there are a few things about the Maverick that make me iffy. It's front wheel drive based. I'm always meh on that. It's not body on frame. That's not necessarily a dealbreaker, but I think they should have at least tried. There's no 2 door 2 seat configuration. I miss small pickups like that. I wanted to get one last year when I ultimately got my 4Runner, but I found out that the market for that kind of thing wasn't being catered to anymore.

Oh, I really hope for Ford's sake that they're not going to be making the Maverick in Mexico, but they probably will.

True! Heck, it's cheaper than a Corolla!

I totally agree. This will be much more practical and just as useful to many customers as a midsize pickup would be.

I'm not a fan of them using the Maverick name as it doesn't have any similarity to the old Maverick, but that's just me.

Toyota will never again make an inexpensive 4x4 body on frame pick up.

The cheapest you can get right now is the four-cylinder 4x4 Tacoma for less than 30 grand if you delete the back row seat.

For the second generation they made the short cab short bed 4x4, which came with hand crank windows and could be had with a manual transmission, that didn’t sell great, so they discontinued it.

They also made the five lug 2WD versions, which sold a bit better, but still not great. So they discontinued those too.

I was really hoping for the Maverick to be a single cab or at least extended cab, but it is a double cab. It makes since because being a unibody it would be expensive to offer multiple cab options. But it really hurt its utility by making it a double cab, the bed seems too short to be useful for medium sized loads. Ford tried to spin this off as positive, saying you can get a flat load floor by dropping the tail gate but all the promotional material makes this loading seem janky as hell.

Its not the pickup people might want but it is all they will need because most people don't use the full capability of even a mid size pickup. Toyota will not make a small pickup, owning the midsized pickup market is good enough. Maybe if the Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz are a smashing success Toyota will at least take note. Toyota doesn't have to make their trucks affordable like they did in the 80's, they are established and can charge whatever they want as long as they keep up their reputation of lasting a long time.

They did their research pretty well.

Most people who buy pick up trucks don’t need a pick up truck because they just use them as a four-door passenger vehicle and haul air.

The idea of a two door short cab pick up truck is ridiculous, unless you’re buying yourself a work truck, then you’re not even in the target audience of this thing.

Just like the crossover is a natural evolution of the body on frame SUV, the car based fake pick up truck with four doors and a useless bed is the natural evolution of the American pick up.

It may be a double cab, but the pic I saw of the back seat looks like there is maybe 4 inches of leg room in the double cab. "Seats 5 adults" lol.....

No need. Ford doesn't work the bugs out like that.

Just get it and enjoy it. It's gonna need a few trips to make it right.

Also, for those of you complaining it's not a big truck, or a body on frame truck, or long enough bed truck. They have those.

This segment is designed to capture car drivers and convert to truck drivers. The idea being you upgrade later to a Ranger or a F150.

The truck segment is so hot right now that the power play is getting more people in the truck segment.

The 12" screens and focus on interiors, switching to coil rears, is what got the new RAM to pull in a ton of car buyers, making a killing the last few years in the process.

It’s cool creating a new segment in the market.
Toyota was supposed to introduce the same type of vehicle using Scion brand many years back.

I can really see this being a big hit. The wife gets a nice family/grocery hauler to double as a family vacation road trip vehicle… and the husband gets a little pickup to tool around town without having to spend another $40,000.

This is an awesome solution for a LOT of young American families that can’t throw down $80k+ for 2 vehicles.

Don’t forget that they also delivered the first true hybrid (I don’t count Rams eTorque, and I drive one every day) in the PowerBoost motors to the F150 which gives unparalleled performance, combined mpg, and can power all your tools directly plugged into the bed.
