I'm almost 40. You can look over your shoulder and in your mirrors, not see anything, start merging, and then have an a$$hole fly up besides you doing 90mph in a 60mph zone. It happens and that's where BSM is most useful.

I check mirrors and look over my shoulder any time I merge but I'm also not perfect and something like a motorcycle can easily sneak up on your or hide in one of the numerous blind spots. BSM is just another tool in the toolbox to keep me from having a bad day.

Toyota is targeting the broad spectrum of buyers who don't mind the standard safety features on all Toyota cars, and welcome them instead of paying add-ons like BMW charges. Not sure how the roads are where you're living, but having a motorcycle or a small low convertible hanging out in your blind spot is a real issue, especially with some of the lifted trucks forum members here have. I'd rather have a second safety assist and never end up using it, than not have it and wonder if I could have avoided an accident if I had it.

This is literally the same reasoning everyone uses to get skid plates, rock sliders, etc. Better to have them and not use them. So what's the deal with BSM? As long as you can turn it off, which I am pretty sure in all Toyotas that have this you can.

I also have no desire for self driving cars. Adaptive cruise control though is freaking awesome on the interstate!

The one thing I hope the 4R never gets is that retarded start/stop garbage.

I find that one annoying mainly because people will jump in front of you and then it brakes. I will say it gets about 3-4mpg better than regular cruise.

this is why motorcyclist get hit all the time.

The current model probably won’t get it, because it requires you to have at least two batteries and there is no place to put them with the current set up.

It must be the 5th gen preferred height haha....i'll check the manual now!
I never had blind spot issues until the 5th gen. But, worth every second of it.

^THIS! I also have a jacked up back/neck that makes it difficult to turn quickly, so I hear ya! Also on the frequent/multiple lane changes-So Cal is awful to drive. It's a game changer.

I do look over my shoulders every time I change lanes, but the assistance would definitely be a welcome help, just for safety-my own, my passengers, and everyone else on the road. Plus, being a shorty....the blind spots are big and can't always see around them.

I dont think it should be forced, but definately an option that can be turned on or off. Or....bigger mirrors. I'll never not gripe about the baby mirrors hahaha!

What do you want me to do stare at the thing for 5 seconds?

I meant you look at one mirror then look at the next mirror. In that time something could sneak up on you that you didn't see originally.

I rode a motorcycle as well.

Most blind spot issues would be rectified if Toyota installed taller mirrors with fisheyes underneath the main side view mirrors.

DOT regulations prohibit using a fisheye as the sole mirror on the driver’s side, for some reason. There is also not enough real estate to glue on a fisheye mirror and still keep a good field of view with the OEM mirrors.

I personally prefer bigger mirrors with fisheyes to BSM, but most manufacturers these days are building smaller and more aerodynamic mirrors, maybe because people keep bitching about wind noise.

I’m not discrediting blind spot monitoring. I just think it’s funny that it’s ‘news’ worthy and excitable that it’s going to be on the 2022.

I think it’s weird that it was omitted from the safety package that they started putting on all of the models starting in 2020 or that it appears to be an option available only on one model trim, if you can believe the article…

4runner features never really made sense. Things you think a 50k pro should come with aren’t there lol

I put a 2" fisheye on the left side mirror. Plenty of room. Totally eliminates the blind spot. Beats looking over the shoulder.

If some bonehead comes racing up behind me doing 95 in a 65 zone, that's on them. And a good test for the rear armor.

I know this is going to start an argument but the 4Runner has NO blind spots if you adjust your mirrors properly. I'm willing to bet 90% of the people on the road dont adjust them properly. The 4Runner is the first vehicle I've owned that has the best view all around while driving. You don't even need those fish eye mirrors that people add to the rear view. Watch the video below. It'll change your life.

    I did not know that.
What’s the criteria to be considered a fisheye mirror?

Cartrimhome sells a “convex” mirror which works really well. Except it takes a while to re-calibrate your brain to the different wide angle visual field. For example when timing a merge into a left hand lane.

    Convex/fisheye only for passenger…

No idea why. Something with judging distance?

The absolute worst new “feature” on vehicles is the one that turns them off and on automatically every time you come to a stop.

And on many vehicles you have to manually disable the feature every time you get in the vehicle. That one is a dealbreaker for me.

The rav4 mirror mod fixes the blind spot problem. They’re great. You can see a vehicle coming up behind you in the overhead rear view mirror. Then as it gets closer you can see it in both the overhead mirror and the side mirror. Snd it’ll be way up in your peripheral vision before it disappears from the side mirror. It’s a great mod.

Of course, you can also just adjust them properly as in the video posted above. And also have no blind spot.
