Looks nice. Not really my jam with the 20" wheels, but they'll sell a lot of these. Deleting the running boards really cleans up the look.

well that just seems like they've sort of Frankensteined something together from whatever parts they've got left in the bin. But what do I know.

Every 4x4 is going to get a trim level like this. Jeep will sell you a Wrangler High Altitude that is targeting the same crowd. I see it as no biggie, so long as they continue to offer the off-road trims as well.

Why does it remind me so much of a Tahoe all of the sudden...

Not my cup of tea.. looks a bit confused to me. But I'm sure the Limited folks that don't like chrome will be about it.

LOL, was just about to start a thread on this. First impression is it's an interesting mashup of the SR5 and Limited, with a touch of OR.

But digging in it basically seems to be an SR5 Premium with the suspension and wheels of the Limited, the OR stuff being cosmetic.

Personally, I prefer the full time 4WD of the Limited, but could see going for one of these to get the XREAS, which I also really like -- if it's a lot cheaper than the Limited. That seems to be the target market -- people who want a more on-road biased 4Runner, but don't want to pay for a Limited.

Maybe the biggest prob with this thing is it's name -- TRD Sport suggests something beefed up. I guess to be fair the XREAS and 20 inch wheels do help with the handling, so that's a bit of "sport" maybe. But using "TRD" for this seems like a dilution of that brand.

If I was going to post something serious, I would probably say something along the lines Toyota should sell a Limited with the TRD BRO PRO front end and body kits.

    It's a long list...
Yeah pretty much. The small incremental changes each year of "adding" a feature each year comes across as a somewhat less aggressive but still present one finger salute to current model year owners from Toyota.

Negating the 2020 refresh with TSS-P over the 14-19MY we have seen:

-2021 standard LED low-beam headlights as the only change from 2020
-2021 "exclusive colors" available on select other trims (Not a big deal, just make the entire 4Runner color selection available at this point)
-2021 mid year change to standard push button start from conventional ignition
-2022 change to standard LED low/hi headlights

In all honesty they will sell a lot of these. It's good for Toyota and the 4Runner overall, but at this point it's pretty evident the new generation needs to get here yesterday. Since we have so many trim levels with features from each other present in some form or another, why can't you just order exactly what you want from the factory in the current gen? One has to ask at this point.

Looking at the "TRD Sport" here's what I see from the press photos at a glance.

Parts Bin for 22 TRD Sport:
-2010-13 Limited trim wheels (The grey with machined is not new, switched to black and machined in 2014)
-Conventional ignition based on the press photos (notice key hole in tailgate and not touch sensors on the door handles)
    -Hood w/scoop
-2010-13 SR5 bumper without parking sensors (No sensors up front either)

I'm curious what else can be raided from the parts bin at this point haha.

TRD Sport looks like poor mans Limited. I notice Non-premium mirrors? (no turn indicator), No automatic temp controls, may be non JBL headunit? (I don't see JBL badge and not clear if there is sub woofer on the cargo area shot), Not sure it has heat and ventilated seats due to poor lighting, No lock/unlock and glass up down buttons?, May be no moonroof?, May be no parking sensors? (I don't see the sensor below fog light),...

I don't know why TRD Sport still "seems" to have skinny 245s. IMO skinny 245 or even 255s are fugly for newer suvs.

Is this all they got for 2022??? Pfffft. No thanks. And to put a nail in that coffin just add the dreaded shitheap X-Reas suspension to it. Good Job

Oof. Not feeling this one at all. Granted, I'm not part of the target audience for this particular trim. I'm sure there will be plenty out there who do like it and will snap it up.

There's definitely something odd about a Limited front end/body panels and hood scoop combo.

yes I would buy a limited pro .. limited with Trd bumpers and suspension..

Not sure about the trd sport. It’s just a limited with hood scoop, de-chromed and trd soft text seats :boink:

I would too, I would love the idea of the full-time four-wheel-drive with the TRD pro appearance package. That’s the best of both worlds.

And if they threw in a rear locker.

That would be pretty cool! Get all the comfort features and full-time 4WD of the Limited, but with a beefier off road suspension, and without all the dumb chrome -- and also no fake hood scoop. Sounds about perfect to me. That's exactly what I'd want if I did more serious off roading. And not far off from the awesome thing you built.

I think it's really more of an SR5 Premium with Limited suspension and wheels, plus the fake hood scoop from the OR, and a couple other cosmetic bits. I wouldn't consider it a cheaper Limited because it has the part time 4WD transmission of the SR5. To me, the drivetrain is the single most important distinguishing feature of the Limited, followed by its XREAS and creature comforts.

To be fair, ALL of the trims outside of the regular SR5, Limited, and Trail/OR trucks have been parts bin specials.

TRD Pro? Add some black trim and Fox shocks to an OR premium. No KDSS for you!

Venture? Add a... generic roof basket to the OR premium.

(New) Trail? Put a cooler in the trunk of an SR5.

Nightshade? Put some black stuff on a Limited.

Waialua edition? Paint an SR5 blue and put a pro grill and 20" Limited wheels on it.

Remember when you were trick or treating with your buddies and found a house giving out full sized Snickers bars? Did you ever try to switch a few things on your costumes so you could keep going back? Same thing.

That's what most manufacturer's do when they get to end of generation lifecycle. The "B" design team takes over while the best Toyota has focuses on the new generation

They would have been better served with a 40th anniversary or heritage 4Runner with 1980s graphics, floppy mudflaps wiry white lettering and if they had enough ambition, a removable top or 2-door 4runner?

Yeah but the Pro came out in 2015- a full seven years before they announced this crop of goofballs for 2022. That's closer to the first half of the 5th gen timeline than the latter half.

totally agree with you on all these part bin specials. But one thing which has me wondering ..

why does the trd pro have auto headlights stalk and trd or does not ? Is this added at the factory or the port ?

Whatever, if Toyota wants to sell to city slickers who want to 'urbanize' an SUV that is desirable because of its capabilities in the outdoors, that is fine with me. But I hope Toyota remembers that this vehicle achieved its current popularity by being good off road and practical, not stylish and stupid. If they divert too much attention to these desperate city dwellers they will ruin the very thing that got them to buy the 4runner in the first place.

Also 20 inch rims on a 4runner? Don't put those condom thin tires anywhere near the 4runner. Having zero sidewall is why we have to go to pathetic lengths (like air suspension) to get good ride in the first place.

I personally hate 20 inch or larger wheels. Keep them no bigger than 17's. I have seen 4Runners with 24's and they look stupid.

    It's a long list...
@Daytonaviolet, it's a factory addition/programming. The physical switches are identical except the graphics on the stalk that says "Auto" or "DRL". The difference is in the programming in the main body ECU. As far as I can tell there are 4 different types (as it relates to the 14-19MYs, no idea about 20MY+).

    1. SR5 MPX
    2. TRAIL/TRD-OFFROAD MPX
    3. TRD PRO
    4. LIMITED

#1-3 are conventional ignition, so you can't swap #4 into a 1-3 vehicle due to the regular vs. smart key.

2-3 are CAN MS-Sub bus enabled for the crawl control switch.
4 is CAN MS-Sub bus enabled for the memory seats (likely different programming to 2-3).
3-4 are programmed to take inputs from the stalk and photodiode for auto headlights.

Why they can't just make 1 body ecu with programming for all functions is beyond me.

It would be "more lean" since Toyota pioneered that whole inventory thing. ;)

Yeah, I had a read on this just a minute ago and was indeed disappointed. Never liked the chrome on the limited models, and the low front bumper, and I think Toyota just made it worse in my opinion by removing the chrome, with the same low front bumper. I mean, you're not clearing much with it.

    Cheers,
