    Hi everyone,

I'm looking diligently for a decently priced TRD Pro in Lunar Rock and the closest offer to MSRP has been $56.5k out the door which seems a bit steep.

I don't HAVE to have one right away, but lunar rock is definitely my favorite color of them all so far and the sooner the better so I can start enjoying a new 4R. If I need to wait for the prices to simmer down, then I don't mind doing so.

My question is whether or not there was any increase in value to these last two 5th gen models for 2021 and 2022 before the redesign due to the move in manufacturing to the USA?

I'm justifying the 4R because I think people will be seeking the 5th gen in coming years if the 6th gen does in fact switch to Made in the USA and they make a significant change to the engine.

I figure the people here would be the most knowledgeable about it so I thought I'd ask.

Thanks for any advice y'all might have!

You will be hard pressed to find out at MSRP since many dealers are selling them above MSRP. If you do find one at MSRP and want it bad enough, get it. They hold their value like nothing else.

A vehicle is a depreciating asset, I would never buy a vehicle betting on that will increase in value. That’s a choice you’ll have to decide for yourself. Take a look at the Tacoma’s from the 2nd generation to the 3rd generation.
This is not financial advice, I am not a financial advisor.

Sorry! I don't mean that I expect the price to increase. I should have clarified that I was considering an Audi Q8 prior and couldn't justify losing $15-20k in the first 2-3 years of owning one.

The 4R seems like the logical choice.

Yes, a 4runner in my opinion would be the choice as well. Great resale value and reliable.

I bought a 21 Pro in White on 5/4/21. Found a Lunar listed on a different dealer website as incoming last night. Called this morning and put a deposit on it. Paid sticker for my white, paying sticker for the lunar and getting 2k over sticker on my trade.
I wanted the lunar because it's a limited color to this year Trd Pro. They are currently bringing 10k over msrp at dealer auctions and white or black are bring 4k over.

Interesting. I was looking at Audi's last year and was going to buy an SQ7. I was sure about it. But I just couldn't justify putting it through New York winters while it losing 20k either. And that's why all of the new cars I have purchased were only summer cars, and I'd get a half assed car for a daily/winter. Well, I ended up getting a screaming deal on a RS 5 in an exclusive color and bought an Audi anyways. Fast forward a year later and I decided I still need something reliable that I won't hate myself for driving it through the winter. And then I came across LR 4runner. No brainer. It's obviously going to depreciate in value like any car, but it can take a beating(even though it won't) AND I can either keep it forever or get out from underneath it for a fraction of the depreciation of almost any car out there. I've never see anything like it. It just makes sense. The sixth gen is certainly not going to increase the depreciation of this vehicle. Just my opinion

Not knowing what options are included in that price? Looks like it's roughly 3.5K above MSRP. All in all not bad if you REALLY want one. That said, some have gotten them at MSRP - but it's getting late in the game to chance that......if you REALLY want one? just my opinion.....which means.......jack;)

    Good luck whatever you decide.

Same exact boat. Just can't justify it like you said and I do love the 4runner TRD pro. I have 3 big things that are important to me

    • The car fits my 6'3" frame well and I'm comfortable
    • It looks mean/good
    • It doesn't have much road noise/is quiet and smooth
The 4runner doesn't quite check those as much as a q8 obviously but I think the lack of depreciation more than makes up for it.

If that price inckudes tax and other fees, would that make it pretty much MSRP?

You might want to jump on that deal. That's a great deal for pro prices atm.

Any speculation on whether or not they might normalize in price a littttttttle once the chip shortage ends at some point?

My cousin paid 57 otd before the chip shortage which he got in like January for a lunar rock. Unless you want to wait for a 2022 who knows but maybe the price won't go down for a while.

I leased my LR as opposed to purchasing, but paid msrp. Payment is pretty reasonable.

Just an opinion but I think that once 4R production leaves Japan then good examples of Gen 5's will become even more desirable especially if the Gen 6 is priced a notch above the Gen 5. Even if depreciation just stays normal I remember reading that a 4R was expected to retain 70% of its value after 5 years and my 2016 seems to be doing at least that well.

A lot depends on your reason for buying a 4Runner in the first place. If a big factor is the 4Runner's anticipated value retention versus an Audi or whatever, then it seems like you're making your decision largely on the basis of money/value. If that's true, you may want to consider additional vehicle options as well. While the 4R has historically retained its value more than almost any other vehicle, there are no guarantees, and a new generation is approaching. No telling what will happen to Gen5 values once it's released. If you want a 4Runner because it's a 4Runner, then decide how much you want to spend and try to get one for that. But if it doesn't matter that it's a 4Runner, maybe you could get something else that fits your wants/needs for $10k-$15k less, and then you have the same savings as you might get with a 4Runner's value retention, but you get those savings up front.

I may be different from a lot of people, but I put a lot of miles on my vehicles. I don't trade up for newer just to have newer. As a result, value retention doen't come into play for me when I purchase a vehicle. After all, I have no plans to resell or trade it in. So I focus on purchasing what I want that fits my budget, and enjoy the vehicle for what it is and for the reasons I bought it. That also helps me when I get the first scratch or nick - I'm gonna keep it for 15-20 years anyway, so it's not that big of a deal.

    My two cents.

That's great advice. I do love the 4runner after my dad owned 2 in 2005 and 2015. I just got caught up wanting a luxury vehicle at one point but then realized the 4R made more sense financially since they do hold their value historically.

I love the swag that the 4R brings and I haven't seen many SUVs in lower ranges that are comparable but I'm open to suggestions.

I'll keep doing more research and I appreciate the insightful post!

I paid $2,000 above MSRP for a Lunar Rock Pro 4Runner two weeks ago. Vehicles are a depreciating asset - except for these current crazy times with extremely low inventories and strong demand. Word is that one can no longer order a Pro 4R, thus the Lunar Rock will be a rare color going forward.

Hey if any of you guys are passing, do you mind sharing which dealers are selling their Lunar Rocks for close to MSRP? I am on the hunt. Willing to purchase from anywhere and have it transported.

I leased one for msrp. Put 2k down and will be likely offering my vehicle up for a lease takeover as I now need a full size pickup, if you're interested in a lease.

Fancy color of a readily available and ridiculously common 4x4 vehicle.

They will never appreciate in value, but it doesn’t keep the dealer from bending you over on a sale, or you from making a quick buck if you attempt to immediately resell it to an idiot if you have less than 250 miles on the clock.

Definitely deflates the special color / limited supply argument. At the end of the day I am still pleased with the purchase with no regrets. I never bought with the intent of being concerned about the resale value. Viewing this as a 11 year vehicle - when I will be 70! I am self employed / it is a tax write off as well!

For sure, for me Lunar Rock is the best color ever put on a 4runner. All about taste, other opinions may differ.

My first choice would have been Cement. But after three weeks of LR ownership, LR is it for me - thankfully! I have taken a few pictures of it with the mountain bikes on the back or parked next to a Voodoo Blue Pro one day, and the pictures really do not do it justice! Every picture shows "eh"! In person LR is truly unique on the 4R!
