I was initially wanting to trade in my 2017, but, I got talked into trading my Wife's 2012 Jeep Patriot instead. It has never ran right since we purchased it, but, we kept getting told that it was normal and nothing to be concerned about. Just a "quirk of the CVT". finally the check engine light kicked on and a scan revealed that this entire time it has been misfiring and not shifting correctly."quirk of the CVT" my ass. Good riddance to that Godforsaken thing.

OMG this thread is giving me so many "feels." So many of y'all have traded in cars that I've had, and loved or loathed, and that I think of as part of a long succession of trade-ins that culminated in the purchase of my 4Runner.

My 09 BMW 328i M Sport went in for a 15 VW GTI, cause as much as I loved that BMW I decided I wanted to go back to a stick shift. (Plus it had an ugly ass color combo). Driving that GTI made me grin from ear to ear but its electrical gremlins (and my anger at VW over diesel-gate) gave me the excuse to trade it in for the 2016 BMW M235i manual that I thought I'd wanted all along. Like the 328i, this BMW was incredibly competent (what engineering!) but unlike the 328i it felt too digital and soulless. So that went in for a 2019 Subaru WRX manual, which was every bit as analog and soulful as I wanted, plus had excellent AWD, but was maddeningly incompetent under the hood. And that's what went in for the 2020 Limited.

What I learned along the way was my folly in trying to have one car that "does it all." A car that stirs the emotions in looks and driving experience, is comfortable and efficient for commuting and long trips, practical for carrying people and stuff, at least decent in bad weather and rough terrain, and reliable and durable with a reasonable cost of purchase and ownership. That car does not exist.

My epiphany was that the 4Runner would check all the boxes -- and some in a really, really big way -- except driving fun and efficiency. The real solution for me, I realized, was to get the 4Runner and later add a vehicle that emphasizes fun but is comfortable and efficient and inexpensive to own, while not being really impractical. I'm still deciding on what that will be, but one candidate is the upcoming BRZ (the Miata is too small to be at all practical IMO). Or maybe an EV, if things have progressed enough by then.

So..... here is "the car my 4Runner replaced:"

I got some equity out of it! Truthfully that was the only negotiating that I did on my Venture purchase was "how much for the BMW?" I got 1K more than I thought I would so it was a win! Not sure why anyone would buy a used BMW, they kill you on the service. Every damn thing that goes wrong is $1,400.00 dollars, every time. LOL.

I agree with you 100%. Thankfully I have motorcycles for my "fun / fast" vehicles.

2015 Tacoma, TRD Sport. I liked it, needed more backroom space and didn't need the bed anymore. I'd gladly take another 2nd gen though as a third vehicle.

We traded in 2 vehicles. A 2010 Rav4, Sport. 3.5 V6, 2wd. Fast and stuck to the road when we lived in the SoCal Mtns.
The other was a 2014 Tacoma TRD/DC 4.0L, 6-speed, 4wd. Fit & finish was great but, engineering and the "bean counters" made it sad.
You'd (or maybe just me) would expect a good spread from the gear ratio in the 6-sp. but, not really.

Although (to me) our 2016 Trail has its share of beans and nannies, its been a good ride. All stock except for rear air bags for trailer towing.

Now, my '03 TJ with 1 ton running gear, is my rock & roll ride.

Replaced my wife's manual 2016 Forester with the 4R. Still have a 2018 GTI which I primarily drive. The GTI gives me my speed fix while the 4R is the slow and steady drive.

I had a Tacoma before my 4Runner. I do miss it quite a bit, was more fun to drive, but wow the 2011 interior was ancient compared to the '16 4Runner.

Would be really interested to hear more about your journey from a 4Runner to the M2 back to another 4Runner. I might have a hard time giving up an M2. I drove a 2017 or 2018, also white, and was amazed. Def more visceral and emotional and engaging than my M235i.
