I just checked vroom and they offered me 41,600! I love the 4runner and have nothing but great things to say about it but I think I'll have to pull the trigger. What's funny is on tacomaworld there's a similar thread but a lot of those guys sell their taco because they are not satisfied with it and want to get into a 4runner or tundra

$43K for mine on VROOM, CarMax wants to see it first, probably to check out the mods. I might have to have a chat with my Director of Household Finances...

I was just offered $54,360 from VROOM for my Pro. I may have to sell it. There is no better time to sell.

No law that says you need to buy another new car. IMO buying something used and banking/investing the equity is the way to go. Maybe you can get lucky and find a decent 3rd gen, if you must have another 4R.

Me, I'd replace mine with a 04-06-ish Tahoe, I have no allegiance to Toyota so I'd have no problem not having another.

Awesome! I'll have to check Vroom out, though some of the experience people have had with them sound a bit sketchy.

Before long, everyone posting on this site will be the owners of second hand 4Runners sold by people who used to post on this site...

There is definitely a shortage of vehicles. Remember those that sell you have the last of the 5th gen also. Who knows what the next ones will be like.

I drove around this weekend for kicks to a few dealers Toyota’s and others. It’s amazing how empty the lots are of both new and used cars.

I have a 15 year old Accord and I just waxed it and had a guy stop me twice at two lights asking if I would sell it. Amazing market for sure.

My 4R is being built this week and I am pumped to get it and glad I have my price locked in.

For my Pro, Carvana offered $50,750
    Carmax $52,000
    VROOM $54,360

Seems like VROOM is a little different than just walking in any Carmax, but $2360 is a big chunk of change.

I got a great offer from a dealership for $53K and trade my 4R for a 2012 Xterra with only 38K miles for $20K. I would pay cash for the X. The problem is I love my 4R and it is set up perfectly for my dog and I. My Pro is basically set up with very few things that I want for it. So I think I will keep the Pro. I might regret this decision, but then again I may never have another vehicle as good or as nice as my Pro.

Just to update everyone I sold it to carmax for 42,600 which was their online offer. I was scared they would try to change the offer when I came in person but they held true to their word. I'm definitely going to miss it and will be back in a 4runner hopefully one day after I buy my first house!

After reading all the goofy numbers in this and the other thread, input my 2020 Off Road (no Premium) just to see. Expected a nice offer but nothing silly based on specs (non-Premium......cloth/base radio/no sunroof), Silver exterior, and exactly one inexpensive factory option.

Good grief. Either there are a bunch of folks that just have to own a Runner or VROOM will be entering Chapter 7 with months.

Good for you! Get your credit score up, put cash in the bank, buy that house then see where you're at in terms of wants and needs for a new vehicle. We'll be happy to see you if you decide to jump back into 4Runner Land. (Well, those of us who didn't also sell before then -- holy cow are these offers tempting LOL)

So, is it really that hard to find a 4runner? I just bought one a few months ago and had my pick. You’d think carvana could send out a few guys to pick up new ones, drive them around for a bit, and sell them for their used car premiums they are charging.

Still having a hard time wrapping my head around these economics.

Ok, can’t control my curiosity anymore, I need to check this out. They are selling for 3 or 4 grand more than I bought mine new. That is nuts

For those wanting to strike while the iron is hot, just be sure you have a line on a replacement vehicle that you want to buy before you sell. New car inventories are super thin to non-existent for some models.

My wife and I went back and forth with several dealers, and even considered buying something 2000 miles away and having it shipped here, but we couldn't make a decent deal on a new Toyota configured the way she wanted. So we circled back around to Subaru and lucked into a Forester Sport that came off the truck that morning and was just logged into inventory. Boom! She's happy, I'm happy. They even bumped up their trade-in offer an extra $600 to match Carvana's purchase offer, so we were able to save on the tax by trading it in instead of selling it.

You’re right about a back up plan. Most of the manufacturers are up a creek with these chip shortages. Many dealer lots half empty around me.

There was an article in local paper yesterday about someone paying than MSRP for a Yukon Denali and this was as GM employee who could normally get the discount. Crazy!

I polished and waxed my old accord Friday and had a guy follow me asking me twice to sell it. So I think this vehicle inventory shortage is a real issue.

if you have a spare car and can wait it out snd profit great. If not think twice.

    The shortage is real
-folks scared of mass transit, buying vehicles.
-city folks buying houses outside the city, now need to buy a vehicle
    -computer chip shortage
    -factories that shut down/slowed down.
-oh and shipping is backed up.

Yep amazing how a virus from China kills over 3 million around the globe, sickens many others with unknown side effects, and changes our lifestyles and our economy all in a little over 12 months.

They're not that hard to find, just have to wait a few weeks for deliveries. Sent in a $500 deposit literally yesterday. Was for a MSRP 4Runner which saddens me. But I'm getting over $38.5k for my 2 year old Tacoma with 20k miles, which is more than I paid OTD.....
Buying a base SR5 and going to be $1000 different between my trade and the new car lol.

I don't understand what's going on right now, but I'm going to take advantage of it.

It really is amazing. I'm gathering from these posts that ORs are getting especially good offers. But Vroom just upped their offer on my 2020 Limited by $500, to $46,878. That's just $351 less than my OTD on the thing last June! And it's not just Vroom. Carmax came in at $46,000 even. Wow wow wow.

VROOM just upped their offer another $500 to $54860 for my Pro. I don't know if I can keep it now at that price. Since I rolled negative equity into it, I have a get out of jail free card. I love my Pro, but I feel like this is a huge opportunity to lower my debt and get way better gas mileage. Big decision and I don't really like any other vehicles.

Making more sense after stopping at the largest Toyota dealer in state this afternoon.

New Inventory - including showroom floor:

    Tundra - 0
    Tacoma - 0

    Sequoia - 1 SR5 trim
    4Runner - 0
    Highlander - 5 (didn't check trim levels)
    Rav4 - 4 base models

Rec'd a second offer from Vroom for higher amt on the 4Runner Friday. Not interested, completed form out of curiosity.
The 2018 Tacoma access cab Off Road may just find a new home, though. Haven't liked it since I've owned it and the money is close to purchase price excluding T/T/L.

@DallasTRDPro: Did you fish or cut bait? My offers have only been good for 48 hours, assume likewise.

The only reason I didn't trade my 4R is because I love it and whatever else I get will be way less cool to drive. Not many vehicles are just a cool vehicle and the 4R and Jeeps are it for me. And no Wrangler will drive like the 4R. Driving another Grand Cherokee sounds awful. I would drive an Xterra, but there is literally almost zero aftermarket support now for them. My 4R will always have one of the best resale values so I can at least drive something cool, fun, capable and reliable. I couldn't name another vehicle that fits that description. If I had another vehicle then maybe. Having to replace the 4R doesn't save me enough money to make it worth it. Another factor is my 4R is setup perfectly for my needs and doesn't need a thing. Every other vehicle would need thousands of dollars of mods. I've never had a vehicle that I love as much as the 4R.

John D is correct though the value of our USD is declining which means the purchasing power of that goes down. There are many signs of inflation in lumber, groceries and energy and look at home prices. Groceries are a simple one for most to relate to quickly.

I for one am concerned about our economy. We as a country cannot keep “printing “ money and borrowing from other countries. Sooner or later it all catches up with you.

This is not a political post just observation of what is happening in economy.

I hope this rise in prices for used cars is mostly due to short supply of new cars. There is no denying that inflation is part of it. Think about how much it is going to cost replace that used car before selling it just because you see what looks like an attractive offer. How many ounces of gold would it have cost years ago vs how many ounces of gold are they offering now?
As for the original question of should I sell. It probably does make good sense to sell, at the high prices of what we hope is a bubble in used car prices, to help with favorable finances for a home. That’s a common and sensible step.

I was just informed by a second dealership that you cannot place an order for a 2021 TRD Pro 4Runner.

My local dealer, which is quite large, has 7 2021 4Runners in stock. A SR5, Trail, Venture, ORP, two Limiteds and a PRO. Until a couple weeks ago they were offering their usual discounts of 2-3 k. All these 7 are being offered at MSRP. That includes the PRO.

EDIT: PS the Pro is Black, the Trail is Cement.
