    Good afternoon all,
I know there is a thread about this but I have some personal questions.
We just received a call from the dealership & they wanted to schedule the replacement of the fuel pump for next week.
I asked what solution to the problem did they find & was told "we have an updated fuel pump".
Has anyone else received this call & solution? It was a big topic for a while but seems to have tapered off.
One last question. This is the first time our 4runner will be in the service department. What can I do to protect myself from dealership damage? Take a bunch of pictures before we drop it off?
    Thanks,
    Ryan

Good call! Is yours factory or aftermarket? I can pull it this weekend.
    Thanks,
    Ryan.

Factory with stainless hardware. Many have posted of jacked up skid plate bolts from the dealership "Tech's".

Can you confirm the part numbers being installed, when complete?

    "0400986231 kit,pump, fue
    0400981630 replacement ki

Also, the less fuel in the tank the easier for the tech.

I'm gonna give my dealership a call next week to see when I can bring it in.

I had tentative plans for a road trip in May so I'm happy that they finally have pumps "available"? for my year.

Good point on removing the fuel tank skid plate. After my previous experience with the forward skid plates, maybe I should consider removing it.

Ours is scheduled for noon Monday and we have a full tank. Time for a Sunday drive.
I hope they don't mess anything up. All we can do is remove the skid & hope for the best.

I thought it was only '19. Apparently some '18 have it also. Not sure if I have heard of the 2020 or '21 having it.
We were on & off the recall list like 6 times! I kept checking.

I was on, off and now back on the list too.

For those who are interested, do a Google search for Toyota fuel pump recall and lots of hits.

Must be there are plenty of replacement pumps available now.
My 2018 production date was in 2017, before the time of concern stated as
Late May 2018 – Early April 2019. So no recall for me.

Good for Toyota that they could track the installation of the problem fuel pumps that happened only on certain models at certain times. A benefit of keeping good records.

I’ve been trying to check if my 4runner has been added for weeks. Every time I type in my plates or VIN it says an error occurred and to try again later, guess that’s their way of saying they don’t know:rofl:

I am attempting to remove my gas tank skid before the appointment tomorrow.
I have one question. Must you take out the drive (propel lol) shaft to remove the skid? There is one bolt I cannot seem to figure out how to reach.
    Thanks,
    Ryan.

NOTE: To anyone that has this recall. If you have the tools & ability it is a very good idea to pull the gas tank skid before you take it in. I should have taken pictures but the front inner bolt is directly adjacent to the driveshaft! This bolt is the hardest thing about dropping the skid & one of the easiest to strip upon reinstall.
WHEN I reinstall the skid plate I will drop the driveshaft and install the bolt properly and to spec.
I don't see the "recall" allowing time for a driveshaft R&R if it "can" be done without it.
I have a lot of tools but I fail to see one (I don't have being the solution here). I have deeps & short sockets, wide & narrow wrenches, pneumatics etc. I still had to remove that bolt 3-4 teeth on the wrench each turn...
I bet they wouldn't even have replaced that bolt if they took it out. I don't know or trust our dealership as I do all our maintenance...
Please be careful. Techs are paid per job; not per hour. No disrespect! I wish I could be a true & honest mechanic.
    Ryan.

Here is the cost total. My wife being in accounting wanted the numbers (bless her)! It is also time for our second oil change in 2 yrs. She rolled into the dealership with 10,001 miles! I can imagine their faces...
"My husband took the skidplate off."
They didn't know what to say. However they said it wasn't necessary (not possible).
Long & short: do everything you can to help yourself & know it is done right!
Do you believe for one second they thought about lubing the driveshaft? Nope. This is book labor & I did half the job.
    Trust yourself,
    Ryan.

I know they didn't charge you, but i priced the parts and they came in under $200.00. Thanks for confirming part numbers and i'm glad everything worked out.

At least with the fuel pump replacement, your getting one of their actual mechanics rather than the apprentice jiffy lube guy.

    I assume?

Blacked out badges, window deflectors, smoked 3rd brake light. I have a Borla muffler on order as well as some color matched engine cover stickers. I'll be painting the stock wheels soon as well. Falken tires in the fall as well.
I got a call yesterday that they had the parts in to do the recall. Mine goes in next Wed. I'll be hoping they don't screw up something. They said it should take 3-4 hours but I'm getting a loaner car so it doesn't really matter.

I hate to say it but I think the dealer is correct. I believe there is an access hole under the carpeting to get to the fuel pump. They dont drop the tank.

No hole in the floor of the 5th gens, they drop the tank. Not like it's difficult. Probably saying it was not necessary for him to remove the skid plate, that the techs would have done so.

Had mine replaced today. It took them about 2 hours. They asked me to bring it in with 1/4 of a tank or less, so I assume they had to drop the tank as well. Haven't checked for any stripped bolts yet, but I'll do that this weekend.

Am I nuts in that the truck seems to have a bit more...."oomph"? It just seems to accelerate a little easier than before. Maybe it's my imagination, I don't know.
