I'm probably just psyching myself out, but I've read plenty of horror stories about 7+ month wait times.

From my understanding, the allocation process for a Toyota dealership almost seems like a luck-of-the-draw system when it comes to trying to get a specific color/build. The dealership I ordered from said they have "two allocation slots per month". I'm obviously not an expert on the Toyota allocation system, but does two per month mean for any model? So they could potentially only get two Corollas one month? Or am I completely misunderstanding what they mean by two allocations per month?

I do understand that you don't actually "order" a vehicle from Toyota.

I "ordered" a Lunar Rock with the dash cam, usb dual power port, and trail running boards. It doesn't seem to me like those accessories would be anything too crazy to get, but they would have to get that specific build from the factory/port. My worry is that the dealership I'm going through won't be able to get the vehicle at all.

I guess I'm really just trying to understand this whole allocation thing a little bit better. I've been reading up a lot on it but just can't seem to grasp it lol.

On a side note, it's been 2 weeks since I gave the dealership my $500 down payment. I am probably going to call them at the end of this week to see if they can give me any clarity.

What did you pay for the Lunar Rock? If you don't mind me asking. Congrats!

I was offered $1500 off msrp, so I didn't even bother with a counter-offer lol. Every other Lunar Rock I've seen has either been right at MSRP or had a markup on it.

Northeast Ohio, Cain Toyota. My parents have bought quite a few vehicles from them, new and old, so I think that helped quite a bit with everything. They're kind of known around here for being an honest dealer and our family has never been let down by them.

    Welcome to the forum.

When I ordered my SR5P and put down the $500 I was also impatient. I wanted very specific stuff and the only way to get it was to order from Japan. It took right at a month and I was just a basket case. It sounds like you've selected a good dealership so sit back and chill, knowing you'll get exactly what you want.

Congrats! You will absolutely love it! I ordered mine January 2nd and they said by end of February. Took delivery February 25th. Friend from Pennsylvania saw it, ordered March 4th. Expected delivery on his is in April - 3rd to 4th week. Last update he got it was still on track, so it seems 6-8 weeks is about the normal (from what I’ve seen here, as well) so you’re looking good to have it in a month or so. When I ordered, the GM from the Gulf States Fleet dept told me that under COVID they were doing 5 month cycles - 3 on and 2 off. Sounds like you beat the window if that was true.

(The reality is that the only guaranteed truth you can ever get from the local reps is that nothing is guaranteed to be true...)

side note: paid MSRP but got retail on my Jeep, which was about $3.5 - 4k over trade value, so splitting the difference, I may have got a slight discount, like you about 1500. But I’ve personally seen them on lots in Lunar at $8000 and $10,000 over here in Texas. I just refuse to pay over, so I ordered.

I'm definitely impatient about it lol, but I'm ready to wait it out since it's exactly what I'm wanting. I'm just worried about it actually happening, which definitely sounds silly now that I'm typing it out.

Those are some good numbers to hear for timing! Really hoping my dealer can pull that off. Thanks!

Congrats on your soon to be new PRO. I was at my Toyota dealer Saturday, 03/20. They had a 2021 TRD/ORP in Magnetic Grey Metallic with a moon roof on their stock purchase list from Japan. Exactly the vehicle I wanted. So I put a deposit on it. They said it was scheduled to hit the U.S. Port on March 30. Then it would be anywhere from 2-4 weeks to reach the dealership. So I too wait. But I negotiated a $2,200.00 discount without a trade in - yet. And I know they want my FJ Cruiser. (Going to be hard parting with it).

But the Rep showed my on their computer where they had 4 TRD/PRO's on order for sold customers. So I asked if they would honor the discount on the ORP for a PRO. Said NO. They can sell all the Pro's they can get for List price - sight unseen. LOL

But I actually wanted the ORP anyway. Nice to get exactly what you want.

Nice! That's good that you snagged one that they already had on order. The thing that worries me with mine it that my dealership has to wait for the order to be accepted and then the allocation to be given to them (from what I understand). I'll be calling them tomorrow probably to see where they're at with it (if anywhere).

I haven't called to confirm with the dealer but their website is showing a 4Runner (the only one) that is how I ordered it. VIN included. It popped up a couple days after I called in the order.

So the 4runner you ordered showed up on your dealer's website a couple days after you ordered it?

Yukon Cornelius can you explain what 5 month cycles means? I did not understand 3 months on and 2 off? Is that for manufacturing? That would seem odd or shipping?

I placed and order snd deposit on March 12 for an ORP and waiting for this official allocation. I was told hopefully end of May delivery but am awaiting it’s been accepted. I am nervous too and mine is not a Pro but ORP

Again... this comes from the sales chain, so I can’t validate other than I asked additional dealers and they also said the same: with COVID their production runs are 3 months production, 2 months off. I found this odd, since here in San Antonio the Tundra production was hit hard, but a different approach: they were only producing 3 days a week instead of 7 up until state restrictions eased a couple weeks ago as they were only operating 1/3 staffed. But a fleet manager at the plant is the original source I heard the 3 month/ 2 month production for the latter of 2020 and first quarter so far in 2021. Still, odd runs so I asked sales team at Fred McCombs, and Alamo Toyota (where I ordered) and they said the same. So either misinformation being spread in Gulf region, or there’s truth to it. Unfortunately, once I had confirmation on my delivery date, I didn’t pursue further.

I don't know if it is "my" vehicle that showed up. I haven't been in touch with the dealer. It would be quite the coincidence if it isn't. It could be coming from another part of the country, already on a boat, or in the hopper for production. No clue. I'm going to follow up in the next couple of days.

    Hi Yukon,

Thanks for your reply. That makes sense. I agree there always forms of miscommunication and untruths out there. Thanks for sharing for what you have heard. I think all we can do is compare notes and try to find a pattern.

In the end it’s out of our control but we are all anxious I guess. Thanks again for sharing.

    2021 TRD Pro 4runner - Lunar Rock

Hey PreCiiSion - I ordered my 2021 4runner TRD pro (lunar rock) in late Feb. and the dealership also told me they get a set amount of allocations and the number was two/month, I believe. I was told 12-16 weeks for the beast to show up. They also said that it could be longer due to electronics shortages and/or COVID shut-downs; and that it could actually be a 2022 (that was worse cast scenario). Fellow at the dealership was confident that I would get a 2021 but it would be the last Lunar Rock color TRD PRO 4runner that they received. Dealership also said there would be no redesign for the 2022 model.

It sounds like you and I are in the same boat. I really like the Lunar Rock color, so I'm going to keep my fingers crossed I get the 2021. The 2022 color is still a toss-up, so that has me a little worried. Best of luck to you! I'm waiting on a call back from my sales guy now.

I got pretty lucky with mine. I had been to the local dealer a couple times before and had already missed out on a LR that had sold prior to arriving to the dealer. About 3 weeks later, the salesman calls me and says he has another on the way that would arrive in a 1-2 weeks. I went to the dealer that night and signed for it expecting a 2 week wait. It delivered 2 days later.I'm also curious as to how these are allocated. I have only seen one other LR in the Bay Area in the last 9 months or so.

Best of luck, and hope you get it soon! You're gonna love staring at it :)

Very nice! I keep seeing some pop up online, but other dealers seem to be holding onto them instead of trading with other dealers since they sell so easily lol. I'm still waiting on a call back from my sales guy, hopefully I can come back with more information with how the whole allocation process works. I'm definitely looking forward to staring at it. I might have to park it out on the road in front of our house so I can see it out of my office window :p

That's what I heard also. But, they expect a change sometime in 2022 - for the 2023 Model year. That's why I ordered a 2021 while I can.

Thanks! Happy to see a fellow Ohioan on here lol. I'm sure there's quite a few.
By the way, Ganley has a Lunar Rock on their lot right now. They're asking like $63k for it apparently

Congrats on the new order and double congrats for the discount they are offering! I ordered a Lunar Rock probably the week before you did and my salesman didn't seem to think there would be any issue getting one. He was really nonchalant about it too. Said he might not hear anything for 3-4 months, but it's possible they could get an allocation in 2.

Thank you! Looks like you and I will have a race to the finish. Our salesman was pretty nonchalant about things as well, but didn't want to give me any kind of timeline because of Covid and now the canal that slowed things down. See you at the finish line!

I get most of my extended warranty and whatever done at Ganley. This is my 3rd 4runner from them over the past 17 years (1st was an '04 Sport). They have always been good to me sales wise - BUT they do get out of hand a bit on the dealer markups on the Pros and also on some of their build-ups with suspension and tires. I do trust their service department - They have always honest in their appraisals of work and treated my (and my family's) vehicles respectfully. An added feature is that the dealership is 10minutes from home.

Good to hear they treat you well! I've seen a few 2021 Pros go through there while I've been looking for the past 6+ months. I've never heard anyone complain about them, I was just surprised to see that markup. I've seen the $8k+ markup in some states out west, but not in Ohio yet (until that one of course lol).
