    Have the towing package on my 2019 ORP. Does it have a tranny cooler? Can’t see anything on basic visual inspection. When I do some basic digging, I get mixed results (probably because previous generations definitely did).

    The 5th gen doesn't have a traditional tranny cooler. It's more like it shares space at the bottom of the radiator.

    I installed a Derale oil cooler inline with the factory tranny cooler:

    Works like a dream. Keep my temps around 189-195 deg going up a trail in 4H where before I was around 220-225 deg. Big difference IMO.

    I also bought longer transmission oil lines and used 3/8" size to be exact. I believe I bought 8 ft of lines just to be on the safe side. Others have used 6 ft and said it was plenty.

    Bear in mind, I have zero off-road and am in process of building up a 2021 4runner trd pro lunar gray that is purchased and will arrive in 3-5 weeks. Dirt bikes/4 wheelers, sport bikes, street/road vehicles - yes .. I understand modifications from jetting (yes, carbs), gearing, exhausts, timing changes, tunes, tires, brake lines, etc. This is the first time I've seen or heard of a tranny cooler. So, I ask, is this specifically for towing? What are the implications if you do tow a 3k pop-up and do not have this installed? Is towing the only application where this matters as I am adding weight by changes to suspension, bumpers, additional skid plates and rock rails, etc.

    Very curious - and thanks in advance.

    Worth every penny imo and cheap insurance for the transmission. Heat is the number #1 killer of transmissions.

    In stock form the truck will be fine even towing up to 5k. It's when you add weight to it: sliders, skids, bumpers, etc... Also hauling your camping stuff: RTT, propane bottles, etc... is what makes the tranny work harder and produce more heat. My Tacoma has a oil cooler from the factory but for some reason Toyota didn't add it to the 5th gen 4Runner. The 4th gen 4Runners have the tranny oil coolers but not the 5th gen.

    Thank you for,the fast replies. I figured weight was a factor. Time will tell what I ultimately do with this but initial thought was true overlander with towing a pop-up or trailer with 4wheeler, or,trailer,that acts as camp site essentials. Plus Wife and anywhere from 1-7 kid at any given time to be with us.

    Makes sense the cooling will help. Just hadn’t seen that posted on other media I’ve viewed thus far.
