Brand new SR5 or 2018 TRD Off-road with 30000 miles for $2000?

I need some advice. I am having trouble choosing between a new SR5 or a 2018 TRD Off-road with 30000 miles for $2000 or so less.
New vehicle or more features? Mostly going to use it as daily driver with monthly trips camping. No rock crawling.

 

For $2,000 I would 100% buy new. Your choice, but that’s what I would do. Makes no sense to save $2,000 for 30,000 miles of use and older tech.

 

That's a no brainer to me -- the new SR5. You get more off roading ability than you need, and almost all of the ability you don't need. You get excellent LED headlights instead of the piss poor halogens that come on everything before 2021. You get a new car with a new warranty. You get a car that isn't saddled with a fake hood scoop that exists only for looks (and that sometimes bounces sunlight glare right into your eyeballs while driving). And even if you knew that the 2018 was well maintained and trouble free for those 30000 miles, which you can't, you're getting something with a whole 30000 miles and 2/3 years more life on it, all else being equal.

I'd pay 2000 bucks for all that in a heartbeat.

Plus, as many people here will attest, if you someday want to turn it into a rock crawler you certainly can. The most important thing for that is a lift and tires that the Off Road doesn't come with anyway. You'd miss the locking diff of the OR, and that's a real thing. But it's also something that's rarely needed even off road -- let alone the way you intend to use yours. So go for the new SR5!

Does the 4WD selector knob make much difference from the manual 4WD shifter? And except from the locking differential, are the capabilities the same?

 

It would’ve been nice to have a manual level, but no it doesn’t. The only thing would be if the actuator poops out on you then no 4x4 vs a manual lever you’re physically shifting it into 4x4. And yes to capabilities minus electronic enhancements.

And yet there's a 13-page thread with 364 posts, of folks wanting to swap their flat hood for (and some vice-versa) a fake, eye-blinding, existing-only-for-looks scoop hood...go figure.

 

I would think Toyota-care/warranty along with 30k less miles and a clean slate are worth the $2k. Not to mention things like tires that come up sooner on a used vehicle, and a 3yo 30k vehicle sounds like it could've been a lease return (not bad just a consideration). I did the same research about a month ago and it didn't take long to decide on a new SR5P vs a 2018/2019 TRDORP with 25k+ miles. Would have to be a much more substantial gap to justify it IMO

When I was looking last year, all the used ones were overpriced. I almost bought a 2020 SR5 premium 4x4 , but found a 2021 TRO ORP for only 6000$ more, with KDSS. Bought it instead of all the overpriced used ones.

I would go for the new SR5. The off-road goodies are nice, but you'll probably never need them. And, lockers can be added later if you end up wanting them.

 

Brand new for $2,000 extra any day of the week. As mentioned, tires, warranty, wear and tear all add up very, very fast.

4Runners have amazing resale value which is great once you own one, but makes purchasing used almost pointless.

New SR5! New is great for the reasons stated. I’d never bought new prior to this 4R and I have to say it feels good. But I love my fake hood scoop and overpriced factory farkles.

My advice is a new one, in fact if the incremental price is $2,000 for the ORP and you like that, myself bake that into your loan.

Trust me...$2,000 over the course of your or my lifetime is nothing. I just had an uncle pass over the weekend and he and I used to analyze stuff like this and sometimes its a good thing to do and wise to keep things in check. But if you plan to keep this vehicle for a long time, my advice is go get what you truly want if it is not that far out of reach.

When we are seniors and sitting in a chair with health issues, you probably will not look back and say damn I wish I did not spend that extra $2,000. But you will look back and say I enjoyed that truck and enjoy that trip with to the lake, mountains wherever.

Just my opinion, good luck with your decision.

How will you be driving, if you plan to offroad at all I'd say save a little more and get a brand new trd. Buy once cry once
