I just picked up my first 4Runner, a 1997 Limited 4x2. I'm real happy with it, and the wife is going to drive it once I pick up another 3rd Gen. I want the next one to be 4x4. Which year/model 3rd gen is best for 4x4? I want it to be the toughest one. Thanks.

Really depends on what you want. If you want the AWD option get an 01-02 or an 99-02 Limited. If you want a more traditional 4WD system get an 96-00 4Runner. You can't get a locker from the factory with the 01-02 4Runner's since they had the Center Lock Diff which allows for the "AWD" mode. The Limited(96-98) had the Mulit-Mode(push button for 4-Hi but have to shift for 4-Lo). The 1999 4Runners had the highest springs, 1" higher than previous models. After 1999 they started to sit lower.

The multi mode is in the 99-00 only AWD,4x4, and some even have the locker like my 99 Limited. The 01-02 have the "AWD". The 96-98 have that push button but its not "AWD". I know I'm bias but I think the 99 is one of the best years. You can get a 5speed, you can get a AWD one all of which have the 4x4 option. Hope that helps out.
