Hi all, I noticed this weird sound after I went for 5k service.

Every time I start to move after starting the Runner, I hear this sound like when you try to rub a plastic grocery bag coming from under the steering wheel on the left side where the mirror /dimmer buttons are

    here on the :04 mark

    here around :03 mark

    here on :02 mark

    =====================

Just to update this thread for future reference. I went to my toyota service center yesterday, and the mechanic said the sound is normal.

So I asked to drive another similar vehicle. Sure enough there is a similar sound, but then it's louder on my Runner, but the mechanic said he can't do anything.

I also noticed, when I'm in cruise control, when my runner detects a vehicle in front, I hear a similar sound (like a stretched spring that springs back) followed by a hissing sound like a pump just before my Runner applies the brake.

The mechanic again said that is normal, and it was the same on the other Runner that I test drove, be it louder on mine... maybe mine is getting old.. anyway, at least I can rest for now :D

Could it be a loose wiring harness rubbing against something? Or...

That’s definitely call up your dealer worthy.

There is a fix, pretty cheap and I was able to apply it to my other vehicles in the past as well. Turn the music louder. It works.

Does this only happen once after start up? Before you got the dealers response, I was going to guess it had something to do with ABS initializing. I wanna say, every car has a variation of this sound. Some are very quiet though

edit: that said, yours sounds pretty loud. Does your brake pedal feel any different?

My brake pedal is normal. The mechanic didn't tell me what the part was, but he said something to do with the PCS.

I'm not sure if this is just the 2020 TRD OR though, or it affects all 5th gen, but I haven't read anyone complaining about it.

What is the PCS? Im blanking.

The sound sounds like the a-trac does in all those youtube videos. We probably have very robust ABS systems to be able to deal with the load A-trac demands. Might explain why it’s a little louder than most cars. Why it’s louder than before your oil change is a bit of a mystery. I could imagine it being sensitive to how loose the pads sit in the caliper, how worn the pads are, or who knows what else. You noted it with the dealer, seems it should go into your monitoring file

I think it's Pre Collision System?

The sound is just under the steering wheel, but yes. it's on my file in case I need warranty work done in the future.

Ah, ok thanks. Hopefully it’s nothing and it will decide to quiet down on its own

Exactly same as mine. If you look at the mph on the dash, it will happen at 4 mph everytime.

My 2021 does this also, only 3200km but was happening since new. I think it's normal/a quirk.

I think the pump hiss is the brakes. Mine does the same during active cruise control, and when I brake. Other 4runners I test drove did the same thing pretty consistently when I hit the brake pedal, so I didn't worry about it.
