    Hi all,

New member to the site here and hoping to tap into everyone's experience. I've searched and can't seem to find exactly what I'm looking for.

I have a Labrador Retriever Puppy and he is currently about 30lbs but based on the size of the parents, I expect him to be in the 70-80 lb range.

I know a Rough Land Large SUV crate will fit with the rear seats (in a 5 seater 4Runner). Does anyone have any pics they can share?

My 4Runner does not have the cargo tray. Will the Large (non SUV) fit front to back?

Does anyone have any images of the Large with the side door positioned sideways between the wheel wells?

I will not have a chance to try it as I have to order online and I'm really trying to get it right the first time.

    Thanks all!

Amplifying questions since you haven't purchased yet, do you need a crate? Are you just trying to keep doggo off the upholstery? What's the end goal?

Yes, definitely need a crate. I have two kids and like how a crate is safe for the dog and us in the vehicle and how it saves some cargo area in the back.

I'm not really concerned about the upholstery.

I tried a Petmate kennel (almost positive Large size) in the back of my 2019 before we bought. Yes, not as nice as what you are talking about but it just fit with seats in up position.

Did you go with a kennel after?

The reason I asked is because I almost got a crate for my Lab but instead got a metal cage partition to separate the rear cargo area and the rest of the cab. Takes up 0 space and my dog has maximum room.

If you're planning on putting your dog in the passenger area then ya I get the crate thing.

Makes total sense. We had a Boxer that passed in the fall of 2019 and he had the total rear cargo area to himself. We found it really difficult when we traveled because our rooftop box just wasn't enough space.

Yes, when your lab is fully grown he will need a large crate which will take up a lot of space in your SUV. Maybe you don't need that space for other cargo.

I have had golden retrievers weighing in the 80 lb range riding in various SUVs. And I would carry a lot of cargo on trips to the boonies. The dog space to cargo space was optimized by not having a crate. A gate-like partition would also give you more space for cargo and keep the dog in the back.

    YMMV

Not sure which part you are questioning.

In my experience, with dogs the same size as yours and packing a lot of stuff in the vehicle for a trip, the dog in a crate seemed to take up more room than the dog without the crate. They can happily lie down in a space smaller than the crate.

Ahhh. Gotcha. How would you ensure their safety? You mentioned a divider. Do you have any links or pics?

I forgot to add that I have a 75 pound lab and the travel kennel is perfectly sized for him.

That is the regular large version, correct? Not the Large SUV model?

I've thought of that, but I really like the protection of a crate with items in the cargo area.

Sorry I wasn't more clear. I tried a Petmate crate I already owned before I bought the 4Runner. Did the same thing with the back seat of my Tundra. My dogs don't usually ride in crates but I like the ability to do it if I need to.

    Perfect!

At 75 lbs, see any need for the XL?

For travel it is perfect. He is able to turn around and move a bit. I think an XL would give him too much room to slide around. He is not kenneled in the house and he doesn’t mind getting into the large.

I have 2 large ruff land kennels in the back. Fit perfect and don't move around. For extra protection, I strap them down so they don't get thrown around if I were to get in a wreck.

Just the regular large size like mentioned above.

Our biggest dog is a 75 - 80 lb lab for reference.

I'm looking at getting a large Ruff Land kennel to go in my 2021 Limited 4R. Will the large fit front-to-back in a 3rd-row 4R without putting the second row down? The floor is raised a bit in the back with the back row down compared to a 5-seater. I know their large SUV kennel will fit, but it is on backorder so I can only get a regular if I order now.

    Thanks!

Not 100% sure. If the cargo area is smaller then I would say no for it fitting back to front. But I don’t think the cargo area is smaller. I don’t think the raised cargo area would have any effect on it. If you want to be extra sure, you could get one with the side doors and put it sideways back there. That way it will 100% fit.

To follow up... I got the regular large Ruff Land kennel (couldn't find the SUV version in stock anywhere) and it doesn't fit front-to-back in a 5th gen 7-seater 4Runner with the 2nd-row seats up and all the way back. The raised floor in the cargo area lifts it enough that it hits the window. Fortunately, it does fit if you slide the second row forward a little, which is fine for me.

2021 4Runner TRD Off Road Premium with two GEN 2 Ruffland Large SUV that fit perfectly. Each dog is a 80-90lb Chesapeake Bay retriever. They are very comfortable and secure back there. This is a 5seater with the rear seats locked in the most reclined position. The diagonal slant to the SUV Large Rufflands allows it to fit perfectly. I feel good that my dogs (they are big) have more than enough room.

Any chance you have any photos of the pups in the kennel? I stopped by Cabela's the other day and am having a hard time gauging if my GSD will fit in the large. The XL will certainly not fit in the 4Runner. I was on my lunch break from work so didn't have my pup with me to try it out.
