Daily driver long travel ?

Anyone use long travel on there daily driver ? How much added maintenance is there if so. Thanks.

Truck is reserved for long road trips and hauling the dog around. My daily commute is 100 miles roundtrip, I use a diesel VW.

Thanks for the reply Matt83. Wife is wanting to go long travel with her 17 ORP. Just not sure that its practical on a car that will see a 100 miles a day for the next couple of years until she buys another 4runner.

 

I've used my 2018 for multiple long (500-1000 mile) road trips. I think it's perfect. Comfortable seats and seating position, plenty of power (as long as your expectations are reasonable), and fairly ok MPGs. I get close to 20 on the highway. Quiet enough, too.

 

Are we talking about long-travel suspension, or using the 4runner for long travels?

Sorry question was about long travel front suspension. After talking to the shop doing the work though we decided against it.

Having long travel suspensions while traveling long distances on a daily driver would be awesome. What kind of upgrades were you considering, and what led you to decide not to?

 

It would be like any other suspension. Coilovers will need to be rebuilt at some point, so depending the use they get they’ll need to be rebuilt accordingly and everything else will need maintenance. I don’t have long travel, but also thinking of building a setup and haven’t found any negatives about it being my daily driver. If anything it would make for a very smooth comfortable ride.

 

Was thinking of using Total Choas for the uppers and lowers and ADS for the shocks. Shop doing the install didnt think it was necessary for what my wife has in mind. So we are just going to do the ADS shocks and possibly change from JBA to Total Choas upper control arms .

 

We did discuss moving my upper and lower control arms over to her 4runner and putting long travel on mine but im keeping mine as is for now.

 

The down side would be less off the shelf readily available parts, having uniballs everywhere, and potentially mismatched track width depending on what you do with the rear.

Personally I’ve avoided uniballs as much as possible.

 

Good point! I went with ball joint UCA's due to concerns about corrosion with uniballs.

 

My commute 100 miles a day. 4500' elevation. I do my commute in a circle. On way work predominantly down slope. Way home from work predominately down slope. Way home is good, yesterday and day before I got >24mpg, no wind. Averaging 21.8 right now.
2020 orp purchased Nov 2019, 31,000+ miles now. A 2021 orp is secured and on the way to replace the '20, lol.

 

I don’t like hiems or uniballs, I’ve managed to avoid them everywhere except the spherical bearings in the lower mounts on the Kings.

 

We’re talking about long travel suspension, not long road trips lol.

 

My daily commute is 15.2 miles total, to and from work. So not bad at all.
