What's with the stinking gas mileage?

That looks like a page out of my record book. Right in the ballpark for the EPA estimates for a (mostly) stock 4R.

 

Best mpg was 19 mpg on a 300 mile road trip.

Most of the time I get 14-15 mpg.

I don't know how some people get 23 mpg unless they're driving no faster than 55 mph on the freeway like a grandpa.

 

Lower cruising speed helps a ton. I got my best (21.5-ish MPG) with a loaded roof basket cruising at 65 MPH. I could see getting 22-23 on SL tires and cruising at 55-60.

 

I took my basket off in October. First reason being, it would put me over height for the parking garage I thought I was going to be in for work. Secondly, I figured once it started snowing, that thing would be like a giant snow collector that would be a PITA to remove it from. I sold it and have a SSO rack on the way. May still be a collector but I'll fit in the garage with it.

 

I'm taking my first road trip on 295 MT's. I was pretty worried, but am pleasantly surprised. I've been averaging 16.5 MPG or better.

Full skids, sliders, tools, and loaded up for vacation. Not bad!

Well most of us drive toyotas for there reliability and good looks. If you were looking for a gas mileage queen, you purchased the wrong vehicle. All the truck based toyotas don't do well on fuel. Sorry for the bad news. Toyota is slow to the stage in this category but, when they finally get there, it will be something you can hang your hat on.

 

I do 25 mpg to work 62 miles, and the worst 16.5 going home (uphill). I run only 91 non ethanol.
