Unfortunately, the nanny gizmos are only getting more intrusive.

I can definitely appreciate old school simplicity.

I removed my roof rack a while ago. No wind noise. My wife and I were out today for a nice ride. Went to eat and one of her comments thank god for having the side steps to get into the 4runner. And another one boy your 4runner really rides nice. Now you need to understand she drives her SUV Acura all the time and that rides really nice. If my 4runner did not ride good she sure would let me know. Because she would say you should have kept it stock.

Pinstripes, lots of em. Plus a couple dents.
My tire noise hides the wind noise.

Oh man is this thread scaring the crap out of me. Here I am shopping a new 2021 ORP and everyone is talking like creeks/rattles are the norm, but it's all good because... Reliability!

Not sure why so many believe older vehicle designs should be inherently noisier. My 2013 Subaru Legacy with 150,000 miles doesn't have any creaks/rattles, and it's full of cheap plastics and old design. My 2009 silverado didn't have any creaks/rattles in 2018 at 100,000 miles either...

I love the 4Runner, but these forums are funny. Creaks/noises? No problem, it's reliable! Frame rust? No problem, it's reliable!

In the words of Inigo Montoya- "You keep using that word, I do not think it means what you think it means".

People tend to post threads when they perceive a problem, not as much as when things are SOP. I think I'll start posting threads on all the good going on with my 4Runner.

"16000 miles and it can still climb mountain passes at 70+ mph!"
"Gas mileage is 18.5 mpg (about what I expected when I bought it)!"
"The thin paint on my truck isn't scratched (except from things I caused) - is something wrong?"
"I don't have any creaks in my truck - I'm nervous."

Thirty people posting in a talking in a thread on frame rust < thousands of people not talking about no frame rust.

LOL, good post. But as catus says above, ya gotta account for the fact that people tend to post complaints and concerns more than reports of everything going normally.

Statistical fact is the 4Runner is one of the longest lasting, most durable and reliable vehicles on the market. It's near the top of the list of vehicles likely to exceed 200,000 miles. It's relatively simple mechanically, with its main components proven solid again and again in the real world.

That said, frame rust does appear to be a potential achilles heel, so undercoating and/or frequent cleaning is recommended.

My Runner has only 6300 miles and 8 months of use, but so far has been excellent in all regards. The one creak/ squeak I sometimes have is from the rear driver side seat. If I fold the seat down it goes away. So I think I need to lube something back there, where the seatback latches into its upright position. FWIW, I had ongoing seat creaking in my 2016 BMW M235i. Took the dealer three attempts to fix it.

Good video here from a Toyota mechanic re how bulletproof the 4Runner is generally, but with some things to look out for.

Yep, I get it. There is a forum full of complaints for any vehicle out there.

For my part (since I haven't pulled the trigger on a 2021 yet) I should go test drive as many used 5th gens as I can. That should give me an idea on what to expect.

    "Inconceivable!" Good reference! Great movie!

I think I said it earlier, but I don't believe the creaks and rattles are the norm. I'm closing in on 50K with some good abuse mixed in and mine is pretty quiet. It doesn't make any noises that I notice.

Also, I don't really think the 4Runner has frame rust problems like the Tacoma. My '03 was at 257K and 14 years old without any special treatment, and rock solid. I'm not sure about the 5th gen yet, but I'm hoping for a similar experience with the 2019.

I thought that is what the Volume Knob on the Radio is for --- :lalala:Turn it Clockwise and what Creak? what squeak? I don't hear none.. Ok you might hear a little something however I have not heard anything in mine. but I really do not sit there leaning this way and that way to see if I can hear the most remote squeak to the point where "ahhh Hah! I think I heard a Squeak! my 4Runner is Toast let's go complain about it....:crapstorm: Besides after riding and driving a 1984 Unimog 406 for a little over 300 miles it was so loud that we had to wear Earmuff the entire time there is Nothing that compares.

I had a squeaky noise, it was so annoying, turn the radio up, opened the windows to try and tune it out but squealing just got louder and louder, it was like finger nails scratching a chalkboard annoying, finally got it fixed!!! Divorced the bitch.
