Just wanted to start a thread about the 2021 TRD pro DRL's. I want to upgrade them to LED, but dont know exactly what I need. I know they are a 9005 size bulb, but have seen in other random threads of people having problems just plugging LED bulbs in.

This is very specific to the 2021 TRD pro as the high/lows are both integrated into the projector housing (this is unique to the TRD pro). The "old" high/drl functions ONLY as a DRL on the TRD pro.

Has anyone figured out a solution?

@ASPilot19 any luck getting anywhere with this? I actually took my DRL off today and took a picture of the bulb. I thought the bulb said the size was HB3 (I don’t even know if that the size) I also want to change the amber turning signal light so getting some info on that would be great too. I have 2021 TRD Pro as well.

The halogen is a 55w bulb. Have you tried a 55W led bulb?

Off the top of my head, there was only one DDM Saber pro 9005 50W. This was the reason why this particular 9005 led didn’t require a separate DRL driver to prevent it from going full hi beam power at all times.

I would also consider swapping out the 9005 for an led, but I would be willing to bet that 99% of leds would not be compatible in this new 2021 headlight assembly.

As far as I understand 2021 TRD Pro and Limited have both high beam and low beam in the same projector and the bulb on reflector housing is just for DRLs. Only other trims have separate bulbs for low beam and high beams and same 9005 highbeam is used as DRLs. I have a video comparing DRLs with almost full brightness but another kit with a nice dim drl function. But it will be irrelevant for this post.
That's what I understood but could be wrong and please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Yeah got it. I have the 2021 limited assembly.

I was saying, if someone can actually find a 55w 9005 LED, then it might work as a drl

I found a working 9005 led that works fine as the drl. It turned out to be a 50W that has no high beam functionality. It is a drl only LED bulb, which I think is the key to compatibility with the 2021 limited/pro headlight assemblies.

First pic is the stock 9005 halogen drl. The rest are the led, which has that distinctive cross pattern due to the single LED on each of the four sides of the bulb. The LED is more of a 2000k deep orange color vs the 3000k yellow halogens. It cost $18 on eBay, fairly inexpensive.

To be honest, looks a little cooler with the orange, but I’m not sure there is enough of a difference to be worth $18. But I’m keeping it because $18 is still reasonably cheap, and my OCD side feels better that my car is now 100% led lol.

Thanks for figuring this out! The orange looks good! You are not experiencing any slight flickering at all?

Nope. Prob because it’s a 50w bulb same as the stock halogen.

Since you have the regular DRL/high beam set up, I would get Xenondepot's LED bulbs with the DRL driver needed.

Nope don’t. They are a waste of money. They are $60 for the drl driver and $120 for the lights. Also numerous people on this forum have reported a noticeable flicker at night against a wall.

Instead get the $125 DDM 50W 9005 at 3000k or 6000k color of your preference. Available on Amazon or direct here:

They will work on any 2014+ 5th gen that use the 9005 as drl/high beam, which is all of them except for the 2021 limited/pro.

I would recommend buying on Amazon to take advantage of the easy returns.

uhoh. I just went outside again to test it at night. I noticed an ultra slight flicker in the LED drl. I could barely tell even though I was looking for it.

I could not see it at all during the day, and now barely at night. If you are as OCD as I am, perhaps consider canceling your order :(

So the 2021 has led low beams, fogs but halogen hi beams ? That’s janky

Correct for all 2021 except limited and pro. This is actually the better option of you want maximum light, since you’ll have the excellent LED low beam and a separate 9005 high providing additional/duplicate coverage.

Limited/pro are even more strange with LED bi-low/high beam, where the high beam is merely a higher light cutoff with no additional brightness. Also the stupid halogen drl, which seems to be incompatible with the vast majority of LEDs.

no worries man. I went to cancel but it already shipped haha. For 18$ I’ll just rock them til a better solution comes up. I can deal with the flicker over the ugly halogen color.

my OCD is bad lately too but I can hold out for a little haha

Luckily the seller ships super fast and they have free returns in case you change your mind. That said, I’m probably also keeping mine because I like the orange color. The light pulse is so subtle that you cannot see it at all during the day. And then at night, the drl is off, since you should have your headlights on, so not a terrible deal.

The seller told me this $22 connector will prevent the flicker issues.

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/132771750548

I was fine with $18 for the bulb. Not sure if I wanna spend another $22 for a very minor flicker that’s only noticeable at night.

Unless the Sabers have a DRL driver/function, the bulbs will be at full brightness in DRL mode. This will be annoying to drivers in front of you. This was the problem I had with my Sabers.

I now have Xenon Depot bulbs and DRL drivers without issue.

Interesting. Well I’ll defer to you. Someone else in a previous thread confirmed that their Sabers were auto dimming for the DRL, and even uploaded pics of it

Hmm, I was under the impression that the new 21 TRD Pros came with LEDs for all the lights? Or was it just a headlight upgrade?

Mine were older Sabers so they may have made updates and they work ok as DRL.

For some dumb reason, Toyota decided to leave the DRL as a halogen
