Rock sliders that double as running boards

I got my new 4Runner yesterday. When I had originally talked with the dealer on what I wanted we discussed running boards and I expected them to be on there for my vertically challenged wife. When I saw it yesterday they were not on there. (This is not a big issue to me I really wasn't sure I wanted them anyway). I'd like to get something better than the stock boards.

Has anyone put sliders that work as steps on a new Limited? Any pics? I've been searching the past posts but haven't found any yet.

I've seen some that are made by shockworks that look like they may be what I want. Just need more info. I'd prefer to be able to install with no welding or drilling. Don't really want to do anything to possibly damage this new amazing machine. :)

Thanks in advance for your help and insight.

Some vendors can weld on steps to sliders for an extra fee, just gotta give them a call once you find sliders you like.

I was looking at the budbuilt they have some that look like it might be a good option. I don't see any pics of it installed. Any one have experience with these?

Picked up a black 2016 limited last week! Looking for sliders too. Here is a list of vendors that I found so far that make them for the limited: metal tech, demello, shockworks, bud built, white knuckle. Seems like none will work without trimming, removing or replacing the rocker trim. Shockworks sells a replacement rocker trim. Not sure which ones are best. I had demello's on my FJ and liked them. Would like bolt on without having to drill any holes.

    Any input would be appreciated.

Ok I hate to look stupid. But can you tell me what the "rocker trim" is? I am new to the truck world. My Volvo SUV was really more of a car than a truck. Thanks for the info. I'll look at all of these.

You don't look stupid. I have no clue what that is either. If I had to guess though. I'd say it's the trim on the rocker panel. Not sure though. I don't have a limited.

Yeah the Limited gets extra cladding/trim on the body that the other trims dont receive. Makes sliders a pain on the limited models.

Do you have any pics of how adding sliders changes the look? I want to add them but don't want it to look bad. (Would never hear the end of it!)

I never hear the end of any of my mods. My girlfriend hated the tacoma.

Her: "Why did you put so much black metal on it?"
Me: "In case I hit something off road."
Her: "You live in downtown LA. You never go off road."
    Me: ".....You have a point."

I go every now and then. I try to go whenever I go camping. Finding remote spots is fun. Wish I got to go more. Hopefully moving to CO soon so I can enjoy my vehicles more.

I would highly recommend Shrockworks. I have them on mine and my wife and 4 year old like them for steps. Install was not to bad, look great, and they are in Houston so they are kind of local. Plus they also sell the rocker piece that you will need.

Picture of mine installed. I like the dimple cut holes a lot better than the diamond plate on the Budbuilt sliders.

Like the look of the Shockworks too. Did you have to drill any holes to install?

Only 1 hole on the crossmember on the passenger side. I think the need to drill holes differes between years. 2016 was the same as my 2015 with only 1 hole.

This has been a never ending search. I just want to make the right decision. I really like the Shrockworks but those require removing part of the Limited trim or trimming it down etc. Most of them I have found mention this.

I'm looking closer at the White-Knuckle's I have read many good things about them and they have some that they say can be bolted on without removing or damaging any of the trim on the limited. I'm going to try and call them to find out a bit more. They also say that custom options are available so might see if they can make the step a bit deeper since they will mainly be used as running boards for my wife. The price is not bad either. From their site it looks like you could do the stronger DOM construction, with powder coat and full diamond plate top shipped for 890.00. have not decided if I'll do the top plate or not. still going back and forth on that.

If you have experience with these, good or bad I'd love to hear it!

I know. Too many choices. Though less for the LE. Thanks for the feedback everyone. Just ordered the OPOR 2010+ 4Runner Limited Edition Sliders from Metaltech4x4. Spoke with them--bolt on install, no cutting or drilling required. Works with XREAS. Just have to slip the mount in behind the line. Includes all the hardware. They'll ship in about two weeks. Yeah.

How do I know if my 2016 4x4 Limited had the XREAS shocks? (ok I was just doing some online searching and I guess all limited's have the XREAS system.) from that I guess the WhiteKnuckle's won't work. I guess I'll call both White Knuckle and MetalTech tomorrow and see what I can determine. What made you choose the metaltech over the WhiteKnuckle? Just curious those are the 2 that I keep looking at.

    Thanks

I have another question. (I'll say again I am a nube! new to 4Runner and off road trucks in general) :) I have read some info about doing a "body lift" and that this might make it easier to add some of the sliders. I have done some searching but not seeing a lot of info on doing this on the 5th Gen 2016 4Runners. I would not want to raise it much since one reason for the sliders is a step for my wife to get into the the truck. Any thoughts? has anyone done this on their newer Runners? How involved is the install of a body lift (meaning is it something I could do with out a lot of mechanical knowledge etc? or would it be something I need to have done professionally? Thank you all for your help. I'm learning a lot from this site and and am loving my new 4Runner more and more each day!

I got my color keyed Toyota Door edge guards, and roof rail cross bars delivered today so I'll be putting these on soon. I still want to do one of the custom bumpers but that will be a while since they are pretty $$ I want to get the sliders done soon so my wife can get in and out easier when she rides with me, and to add some more protection from the idiots who park to close to me!

Body lifts are generally frowned upon on TacomaWorld and here. I would highly recommend looking into swapping the suspension to achieve lift. Bilstein 5100s are fairly cheap and will give you anywhere between 0.5" and 2.5" of lift and a way better ride than a spacer lift.

If you read up a bit, you can do it yourself easily.

XREAS is listed as standard equipment on the sticker of my 2016 Limited. I picked the Metaltech OPOR sliders after speaking with them. I had an FJ Cruiser before and was familiar with their stuff, although hadn't bought from them. Didn't sound like too much work on the install, liked the way they looked and could have them in a couple of weeks. I'm planning to take the truck offroad for a few days on a run at the end of March, so wanted to have them on the truck by then. Also, I'm going to be taking off the 20" wheels and putting on 17s with AT tires.

BTW - I've been looking at the toytech spacer lift (not body). I know a number of guys that had them on their FJs and they worked fine.

Thanks for the info. I got an email from the guy at WhiteKnuckle today saying that their sliders will not work on a Limited 4Runner with the XREAS. Since what I have read is that all of them do I don't understand how they are selling sliders for the "Limited" if in fact they will not fit on that truck. I tried to call the guy with Metaltech today I left a message hopefully I'll get to talk to him tomorrow and find out more. Looks like that is the only way to go right now with out doing some body modifications that I'm nor really comfortable with. I'll have to check out the spacer lift you are talking about. The reason I saw something from another post on this site or another that a body lift would raise the area up so that you could put sliders directly on the frame with out it interfering with the body panel. Do you know if these spacers would accomplish this?

Spacer Lift = Body Lift. They are the same thing.

There are two kinds of lifts, body (spacer) and suspension (new coilovers, shocks and coils). The second of those lifts is far superior in ride quality and much less likely to fail. To better imagine a spacer lift, Imagine shoving a hockey puck into each of the 4 springs on the truck to achieve lift.

Here is a link to all you need to level out the truck with new suspension from Bilstein. I am absolutely positive you can find this for cheaper out there too. Check out wheelers offroad or some other retailer. Spend the extra 150 now and you won't regret it.
