    Geology Tour Road. Today we head out to Old Dale. Probably only part of it, the car is only two weeks old and we don’t know it well enough yet. Not much off rod experience with cars either, just motorcycle.

    Did Old Dale Road on Monday, we went from Pinto Basin up to Sunset Mine (Flag Building). The last few hundred yards were a bit challenging for us, since we are inexperienced off road and the car is new. Tires (Nitto Terra Grappler, stock size) were aired down to 25 PSI, the truck did extremely well. My spotting was probably spotty, but good enough to get us there and back safely, which is all I can wish for.

    Clearance on this part of the road was fine, the closest we got to any underbody part was about 4 inches and that was only because I didn't direct my wife around it. We used L4 for lower speeds and the rear locker due to loose rocks that gave a little bit of traction challenge. L4 with A-TRAC would have been good enough as well, but since it would have generated more wheel slip, we went with the locker. Overall, while the trail was not easy for us, it's probably correctly labeled as easy. If we had continued North to 29 Palms we would have needed more clearance, there are two or three more difficult obstacles to get up and over, but I think it would have been easily possible in a stock TRD Pro IF we had the optimal lines. But since we were on our own, we decided not to risk it and went back down through Pinto Basin.

    I'd say the trail is easier coming from 29 Palms going into Pinto Basin, since you can do the more difficult spots downhill, which while it might be a bit more scary due to some slip, it'll likely be less demanding on the drivetrain and available traction. Still, I'd say it was intimidating enough for us and gives a perspective of what is considered an "easy" trail. The 4Runner (TRD Pro in our case) has, in my opinion, enough clearance and capability to do it easily if spotted by an experienced person.
