I've had a lot of 6½" component sets in the past in other vehicles, including my 07 Tacoma, but I know that the 4runner has 6x9's in the front door. I'm thinking I'd like to take advantage of the additional low end range of a 6x9 if possible, but the options are a little limited. I have CDT components in my Taco, and they have a pretty good deal on their 6½" components currently, but the price jump to the 6x9 components is double what the 6½" is. I'm not married to the CDT by any stretch of the imagination, matter of fact I demo'd a set of JL Audio C2 components that I really liked the other day. But there isn't a C2 6x9 component available.

Looking online at Crutchfield - the Memphis look promising but I've never heard them before. Focals are nice but with the set I listened to, the tweeters were super tinny and harsh to me, I prefer a more natural, warmer sound. I listened to a Hertz set as well, same issue.

I already have an amp, I'll be running about 75w RMS to the front speakers, with a single 10" or (more likely) 12" sub in a small sealed box.

Anyone have 6x9 components now, and is it worth the money to go a little larger? Looking for opinions.

    Thanks.

    1. Welcome to the forum!
    2. Are you aware that a 6x9 can be converted to a 6.5" very easily with a wood "template"?
Also, now adays 1x 12" will rock a 4runner! The speakers & amps are soo powerful.
Please, keep us informed. I am low budget audiophile now adays...

If running an amp and sub, the added low end isn't really necessary. But, they fit, so why not? I have JL C1-690 component speakers and am pretty happy with them. I cut the guts out of the OEM dash speakers and glued the tweeters into them rather than spending money on mounting adapters.

I wouldn't call it high-fidelity, but they sound pretty good. A definite improvement over the stock speakers. I'm also still on the stock head unit, and no amp. I bet they would liven up with a little more juice.

So, I should have prefaced this by saying I'm pretty experienced in car audio. I installed profess in high school and college, and I've put some kind of system in just about every car I've ever owned. I've just never heard 6x9 components before because I've never had a vehicle with 6x9 openings in the front doors before.

Metra sells the speaker adapters for the dash speakers and doors if I choose to go 6.5 components. I'm just trying to decide if it's worth the extra money for the 6x9. I actually really like the JL c2 components but they don't make a 6x9 outside of the c1 line. If I go 6.5, it will either be those JLs or CDT has a good deal right now on the components for the front and a coax rear speaker as well I may jump on.

If I was running a sub, I would go with the adapters and the higher end JL's.

Audison AP690 is another option. They have a matching 2” for the dash as well.

Well, I bought a set of CDT 6x9 components when they were half off for Black Friday. I'll let you know what I think when I get them installed, hopefully next weekend.

I forgot to post when I did the install. Ended up with an Alpine ILX 650, CDT HD 6x9 components in front and 6.5 coax for the back doors, a Kenwood Excelon 802.5 amp and a JL 12W1 sub. Easily, EASILY the best sounding set up I've ever had. The 6x9 components have way more low end than the 6.5 does, so the crossover curve is much better. No noticeable dip where the 6x9 components drop off and the sub picks up.

100% the best choice. I did have to do some very minor fabrication for the front speakers. I could have bought the Metra tweeter mounts for the dash and 6x9 adapters for the doors, instead I made the tweeter mounts out of some spare ABS plastic I had. I gutted the factory speakers and modified them a little to fit the CDT 6x9 woofers. Had I had a little more forethought I would have just bought the adapters and saved myself some time.

I also used the Crux steering wheel control adapter. I regret not getting the Maestro, as that one can be custom programmed to make the buttons what I want them to be. I still may buy one later and swap out the Crux, but the Crux was super simple plug and play. Kept the rear camera. I did modify the overhead console a tad to fit the microphone where the factory one was. Other than that, it was super straightforward. Just took time.
